Reviews Order Form IASP Opioid use for the alleviation of pain can prove problematic. Differing opinions within the medical community arise from the dual nature of these drugs. Despite universal recognition of the potent analgesic effects of opioids, many health care providers are reluctant to employ them - especially for chronic pain - due to the risk for addiction. Ample literature exists for opioid addiction, yet this volume stands alone in its examination of the history of opioid use for pain relief. It presents a balanced view of the topic by discussing both the benefits and risks of opioid use in pain treatment. International experts from the pain field examine from a historical perspective International experts from the pain field examine from a historical perspective the beneficial and detrimental consequences of opioid use in pain management. From medieval times to the Victorian era to the 21st century, these specialists offer unprecedented insights into understanding and appreciating the usefulness of these drugs. They remove the mythological shrouds surrounding opioid use and they identify objective criteria for incorporating opioids into pain treatment protocols. This volume enlightens and informs readers so that they may broaden and deepen their understanding of the subject.

Attacking Aibo
From: Gizmodo Attacking Aibo It's like the Turing test, but for dogs: Will a real dog attack one of Sony's Aibo robotic dogs if it thinks that the artificial canine is going after its food? Fortunately, scientists at Sony's Computer Science Lab in Paris are on the case, with the hilarious results caught on videotape, America's Funniest Home Video-style: The horrible screams that you hear at the end of this film were made by the experimenters, who were startled to see the dog attack the AIBO. This was the first time that the AIBO was attacked, but it was not the last. During the course of the experiment, the AIBO was sometimes knocked over, bitten and chewed. It is still in perfect working order, and shows no visible signs of damage.

Family papers contain a wealth of information. Most obviously, the history of a particular family can be learned by examining the records a family leaves behind. At the same time, larger trends and events can be traced within the records of one family. Families do not go about their daily lives in a vacuum. They bear and raise children, marry and die, work and play as members of a larger community. As the family historian Tamara Hareven has observed, "An examination of the family's interaction with the process of social and economic change enables us to understand more precisely not only what occurred internally within the family but how such changes were accomplished on a societal level as well." In other words, family papers can be used as a window onto evolving social conditions, on-going economic change, new political trends, and cultural shifts over time.

Many of them are two-story, and most were intended to be built on low-to medium budgets. All of them reflect the ideals of comfort and charm and state-of-the-art technology of the Victorian era. The Victorians, of course, enjoyed architectural embellisments, and it is part of the charm of this book to study the profusion of gables, porches, dormers, pinnacles and more, lavished on even the most modest designs.

Of her sister's "white face, attenuated form, and failing strength" during the sojourn at Roe Head, Charlotte remembered, in 1850, "Nobody knew what ailed her but me [. . .] I felt in my heart she would die if she did not go home, and with this conviction obtained her recall" (473). Charlotte did not use the current medical term for homesickness, "nostalgia." Nor did Emily or many English persons; sometimes called the "Wasting Disease" (Hofer 380), nostalgia was not considered a condition to which the English, a notoriously melancholic people, were susceptible. (In works by both Cheyne [1733, 5th ed. 1753] and Arnold [1782, 2nd ed. 1806], nostalgia and melancholy were mutually exclusive ailments. According to both writers, the English were immune from the former and vulnerable to the latter because theirs was a culturally and economically progressive nation whose unattractive climate and terrain did not inspire homesickness in those who had left.) Nevertheless, the idea of nostalgia attracted English writers, some of whom refer to the disease or its typical victims in their work.
