What the French call the science des origines , the science of origins,a science which is at the bottom of all real knowledge of the actual world, and which is every day growing in interest and importance. . . . Matthew Arnold, On the Study of Celtic Literature In the light shed by current trends in ''cultural studies,'' Matthew Arnold's version of culture would seem to be precisely that which must be contested: a grand edifice housing only those Europeans responsible for what Culture and Anarchy The opposition between Hellene and Hebrew in Matthew Arnold's writing is a remarkably persistent trope in post-Enlightenment thought. But the distinction between a higher, disinterested curiosity linked to the pagan Greeks and the Philistine (or Evangelical) pragmatism of England's merchant classes is also fundamental to English Romanticism in the poetry of Wordsworth and Shelley and Byron, and it is reproduced in the neo-romantic modernism of Pater, Wilde, Hardy, and Forster (see Gottfried and De Laura). Joyce playfully manipulated the Hellene-Hebrew dichotomy as the basis of his great mock-epic''Jewgreek is greekjew. Extremes meet,'' we read in

Louisiana Studies Historic Preservation Supplement
Louisiana was the first state in the nation to produce a statewide architectural heritage education curriculum. Its goal is to provide the state's children with a sense of appreciation, pride, and stewardship for Louisiana's historic buildings. The material is statewide in scope. It deals with building types found throughout Louisiana as well as those limited to specific areas within the state. Thus, the curriculum has elements which teachers in each city, town, and parish can use. In addition, the materials can be adapted for students of any age and can be used to meet the Department of Education's Social Studies Standards. The curriculum is organized into eight components:
  • French Creole Heritage
  • Pioneer Settlement
  • Plantation Life
  • The Victorian Era
  • The Coming of Mechanization
  • The New (20th) Century
  • Downtown Louisiana: The Historic Central Business District
  • Caring For Our Heritage An outline showing how each of these units can be woven directly into the Social Studies curriculum at appropriate places in the chronology of the state's history and culture is included. In addition to a brief background narrative and an informative outline for each unit, the curriculum also contains a short bibliography, an illustrated architectural vocabulary, graphics illustrating major themes, and a series of suggested learning activities for students. The Louisiana Studies Historic Preservation Supplement was created in 1989/1990 through a partnership between the state Department of Education and the Division of Historic Preservation, a subdivision of the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Office of Cultural Development.

Louisiana was the first state in the nation to produce a statewide architectural heritage education curriculum. Its goal is to provide the state's children with a sense of appreciation, pride, and stewardship for Louisiana's historic buildings. In doing so, we also assist teachers in meeting the Department of Education's Social Studies Standards. Bunkie Middle School students visited Avoyelles Parish's Hypolite Bordelon House as part of their Social Studies curriculum. Afterward, with their teacher's assistance, the class produced a historic preservation coloring book. First published in 1989 through a partnership between the Division of Historic Preservation and the state Department of Education, the information took the form of a printed supplement to the eighth grade Louisiana Studies Curriculum Guide. A few years later the material was added to the Division of Historic Preservation's web site. This older version is entitled the Louisiana Studies Historic Preservation Supplement and includes the curriculum's original units: Creole Heritage, Plantation Life, Pioneer Settlement, The Victorian Era, Age of Mechanization, Downtown Louisiana, The Twentieth Century, and Caring for Our Heritage.

Policy Studies , is one of the more egregious examples of this emergent wave of unapologetic defenses of colonialism and imperialism. One might have thought, after over a century of explicit anti-colonial literature, mass political movements throughout former Euro-American colonies, anti-colonial conflicts involving tens of millions dead, and the resounding triumph of anti-colonialism, that such nonsense would remain confined to a lunatic fringe incapable of the articulateness that Kurtz, Niall Ferguson and Daniel Kruger on the British side of the Atlantic, and other advocates of neo-imperialism can bring to bear. In the immediate aftermath of the Iraq invasion, however, an expanding class of right-wing US intellectuals is in the midst of servicing political needs to rationalize the establishment and maintenance of local rulers who putatively share those much over-estimated beliefs called 'Western values.'
Yet that the same English language may be used to seriously promote an impossibly contradicted oxymoron such as 'democratic imperialism' speaks equally to its capacity to confuse as to communicate. With similar phrases being introduced into policy discussions, 'forked tongues' is now more than a Native American metaphor for Euro-American false promises; it describes a social phraseology that reduces democracy to a diminutive adjective and turns English language practice into the invention of lexical means to anti-democratic ends. The Victorian English that labored so long to encode a racial order within promissory phrases of civilizational progress has re-emerged as a global English that sugarcoats the political realities of imperial rule with promises of a democratic future. To learn English has become to learn the future, once again.

    LBST 412/422: England - Summer 1998
The purpose of the England program is to explore a period beginning in the early nineteenth century and extending up until the Second World War. There are two courses, the one focusing on Victorian England and one on the Bloomsbury Group. The first will take place in Exeter, a mid-sized cathedral and university town in the West Country, an area closely associated with the novels of Jane Austen and Thomas Hardy. The second will be centred in Sussex, in the south-east, a county of gentle hills and downs where the writers and artists of Bloomsbury kept country residences.
The course of study will cover art, architecture, literature, science, music and philosophy, through the works of such figures as Austen, Hardy, Charles Darwin, John Fowles, Lytton Strachey, Virginia Woolf, Vita Sackville-West, Roger Fry and Vanessa and Clive Bell. The mode of instruction will be primarily the participatory seminar, though lectures, dramatic readings, peer tutorials and studio art sessions will also be included. Visits will be arranged to concerts, museums, galleries and other artistic sites. No specific previous experience is required for full participation. For most students, course activities will begin in Nanaimo with a small number of class sessions in May and June.
Tentative Itinerary June 21: Leave Vancouver June 22: Arrive London June 22-July 6: Stay at Exeter University, with trips to Bath, Exmoor and Lyme Regis

History and Literature, Harvard University Home Studying the case history also traces the rise of professionalism in the Victorian period. Medicine contributes to this shift by moving away from a natural history model of science, in which amateurs contribute to the collection of knowledge, towards a centralized model of specialization and expertise. For example, Kipling sets the perceived scientific realism of the British Raj against what he sees as the romance of India. He is sympathetic to Hurree Babu's unrealistic desire to aid the British Royal Society as an amateur investigator. The episode suggests Kipling's nostalgia for a model of inquiry that, like the romantic India of his childhood memories, had been outmoded with the emergence of the modern disciplinary expert. The case history provides a site from which to study the history of periodical publishing, as medical cases gradually disappear from general-circulation periodicals like the Gentleman's Quarterly , to surface in new professional medical journals.
