The College of Veterinary Medicine is dedicated to research in animal species of agricultural importance in Oregon. The research program is directed towards three major research missions.
  • Disease detection, identification and control : investigators are working towards the development of new diagnostic tests, the identification of new viral pathogens, and the development of new vaccine strategies. Animal nutrition: Several scientists are working towards identification of micro-nutrient as well as vitamin E and other antioxidant deficiencies. Others are investigating the interrelationship of the omega-3 fatty acids with animal health. The third mission area is a program investigating the use of ruminal microbes as effective agents in bioremediation. This program seeks to solve the problems associated with cattle and sheep exposure to various plant toxins, and has significant environment potential.

VETERINARY MEDICINE
Currently, twenty-seven schools of veterinary medicine offer a four-year program leading to the D.V.M. degree. Prerequisites for admission vary by school, but usually include the premedical requirements discussed later in this handbook. A standardized examination (GRE, MCAT, or VCAT) is required in most cases. You should contact individual schools for specific information. For further information, contact the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges , 1522 K St. NW, Suite 834, Washington, D.C. 20005. The text above has been taken with permission from material by Carol Baffi-Dugan, Tufts University. Pursuing a Pre-Vet Curriculum at Harvard University If you are considering veterinary medical school following graduation from Harvard, there are some useful resources for you as you prepare. The Harvard Pre-Veterinary Society is a growing student group which has over 20 members. In addition to helping you determine requirements for US Veterinary Schools and the Harvard courses that fulfill these requirements, the group compliles a list of animal care experiences for term-time or summer, invites Veterinary Medical Schools to campus, collaborates on application procedures, and shares information on trends in Veterinary medicine. If you are interested in this group or getting any information related to pursuing a veterinary curriculum at Harvard, please sign up on the following listserv for announcements. Feel free to email the contact below should you have any additional questions.

A Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) is an agreement between one or more FDA Centers/Laboratories and one or more non-Federal parties under which the FDA Center/Laboratory provides personnel, services, facilities, equipment, or other resources toward the conduct of specified research or development efforts. Such research must be consistent with the mission of the Center/Laboratory. The CRADA partner contributes all of the above and funding to the project. CRADAs are appropriate only with collaborators who will make significant intellectual contributions to the research project or will contribute essential research materials or technical resources not otherwise reasonably available to FDA. WHAT IS A VETERINARIAN?
Today's veterinarian is dedicated to protecting the health and welfare of both animals and people. Veterinarians are highly educated and skilled in preventing, diagnosing, and treating animal health problems. Because their knowledge and training extends to a number of closely related areas, veterinarians are often involved in more than treating sick or injured animals. Today's veterinarian is a member of a major health profession with its own system of education, licensure, organization, and ethics. In taking the veterinarian's oath, the doctor solemnly swears to use his or her scientific knowledge and skills "for the benefit of society, through the protection of animal health, the relief of animal suffering, the conservation of livestock resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge."
