Pre-Professional Study
A student interested in a career in veterinary medicine should contact the advisor each year to review of academic progress and to discuss summer programs and/or employment opportunities that will enhance hsi or her preparation for entry into this field. Entrance requirements vary among veterinary schools, and a student should become acquainted with the requirements of those particular schools which seem to be the most appropriate choices for that student. The student should confer with the advisor in order to determine the courses that will assure proper preparation for the Veterinary Admissions Test (VAT). Pre-veterinary students should be aware that some veterinary schools require the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) or the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) instead of or in addition to the VAT. Veterinary school applications are typically due almost a year in advance of the expected enrollment, so prospective students need to begin the application process during their Junior year. Students interested in this career may choose any undergraduate major, as long as they complete specifically required courses.

Veterinary Medicine Curriculum http://www.vet.ksu.edu/
Prerequisites and application deadlines change. Every effort is made to keep KSU curriculum guides up to date. They are reviewed regularly and modified when changes are made at the professional schools. Advisors are diligent in maintaining regular contact with representatives from the professional schools. Because the ultimate authority on prerequisites is the professional school, students are encouraged to verify that their coursework fulfills requirements with representatives of the professional schools. Students who have taken prerequisite courses at colleges or universities other than KSU should verify with representatives of the professional schools that this coursework fulfills the requirements they intended it to fulfill. Web addresses and contact information for representatives for each school are provided on the curriculum guides. The College of Veterinary Medicine requires students to complete the 66 hours of pre-professional requirements listed below. A baccalaureate degree is not required prior to admission, although it is recommended. Pre-Veterinary Medicine is not a degree granting program. Students wishing to complete a degree prior to attending veterinary school should consult the Undergraduate Catalog for information about degrees offered at K-State: http://courses.k-state.edu/catalog/undergraduate/degrees/list.html

Animal Science - Pre-Veterinary Medicine Specialization
General Information
Animal Science Pre-Veterinary Medicine students are required to take many of the same courses as Biology students. Because of this, it is possible for students to receive a B.S. in Agriculture and a B.S. in Biology. Another feature of this curriculum is that it meets the entrance course requirements of many Veterinary Colleges and graduate Animal Science programs. Students that enter these post-graduate programs are pursuing degrees in Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) or Animal Science (M.S., Ph.D.).
Why Study Pre-Veterinary Medicine?
This premier Pre-Veterinary Medicine curriculum meets the pre-professional course of many veterinary schools in the U.S.: i.e., Colorado State University, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, Oklahoma State University, Oregon State University, Washington State University. With a D.V.M. degree, a wide range of employment opportunities exist such as private veterinary practice, representative for drug and pharmaceutical companies, university teaching and research, federal inspection, governmental research, animal care. After completing a M.S. or PH.D. degree in Animal Science, graduates can take positions as geneticists, meat scientists, nutritionists, researchers, teachers, technicians or extension livestock agents.

Prospective Students Welcome Admissions Preparation Tips ... Much More Doctor of Veterinary Medicine FAQs: General Prerequisites Curriculum DVM FAQs - General What type of medicine can I practice when I graduate from WesternU-CVM? Western University graduates will be capable of immediate, positive participation in the professional field of their choosing; small animal/exotic/equine/large animal/zoo clinical and/or ambulatory practice; production (dairy, poultry, aquaculture) practice; shelter medicine; wildlife medicine; federal/state/local government; basic/clinical research; international  consultation and more! Is WesternU-CVM accredited? On March 4, 2001 the WesternU-CVM received a letter of reasonable assurance from the AVMA allowing the establishment of the College of Veterinary Medicine with preliminary accreditation status.  WesternU-CVM was converted to the status of Provisional Accreditation the day acceptance letters went out (March 14, 2003). Every element of our plan is in place to reach full accreditation and so we expect everything will go smoothly at our next site visit in the fall of 2004. Applicants and students should also realize that, if the student enters the curriculum in an accredited school (as we are now), even if accreditation is withdrawn during his or her course of study, the student will still be considered a graduate of an accredited school.  It is the college's status at admission that dictates the status of the student at graduation.  Therefore, the student's ability to sit for the board exam and practice veterinary medicine is protected both by the university and by the accrediting agency.

"There are fine things which you mean to do some day, under what you think will be more favorable circumstances. But the only time that is surely yours is the present, hence this is the time to speak the word of appreciation and sympathy, to do the generous deed, to forgive the fault of a thoughtless friend, to sacrifice self a little more for others. Today is the day in which to express your noblest qualities of mind and heart, to do at least one worthy thing which you have long postponed, and to use your God-given abilities for the enrichment of someone less fortunate. Today you can make your life - significant and worthwhile. The present is yours to do with as you will."
