I was once a victim of the never-ending flow of propaganda from the medical establishment (which I think of as the "disease" establishment because they focus on disease rather than on prevention and wellness) who wants to maintain a monopoly on the word "cure" and who wants us to believe that we have no control over our own health and that our only hope to get "well" is with drugs, surgery and radiation. Here is my account about how I achieved optimum health without drugs, surgery or radiation. "First do no harm..." Dr. Joel Robbins - "Disease or "dis-ease" is defined as a lack of health. Disease results when any cell is not functioning 100% of its designed duty whether due to trauma, toxicity, lack of communication or a combination thereof. Disease is due to stress. Disease is nothing more than the body responding to the wrong we have done to it. It is the body's attempt at keeping us alive in response to the wrongs we have inflicted on our bodies. If the body has the intelligence to produce a disease, it is capable of reversing the process to return to health once the cause is removed."

Dr. Harman has an equine practice, the Harmany Equine Clinic, in Washington, Virginia, where she has a client base of 700 to 900 horses in a 50-mile radius. She includes traditional veterinary medicine whenever necessary, especially in the field of diagnostics or drug therapy, but estimates that acupuncture and chiropractic account for 75% of her practice. "The main premise behind complementary and alternative veterinary medicine (CAVM) is that the whole horse is taken into account. Traditional examinations are expanded upon, including all past health history, current clinical conditions, environment, living quarters, workload, nutrition, and even the rider's skill and balance on the horse," said Dr. Harman at the 138th Annual Convention of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) in Boston, July 14-18, at the Hynes Convention Center. Dr. Harman was a member of the AVMA Task Force on Alternative and Complementary Therapies, which recently revised the AVMA guidelines on complementary and alternative veterinary medicine. According to the AVMA, all veterinary medicine, including CAVM, should be held to the same standards. Veterinarians should ensure that they have the requisite skills and knowledge for any treatment modality they may be considering; diagnosis should be based on sound, accepted principles of veterinary medicine; and recommendations for effective and safe care should be based on available scientific knowledge and the medical judgment of the veterinarian.

Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine: Principles and Practice More Information
About CIAH Dr. Allen M. Schoen How you can help Books by Dr. Schoen ... Articles by Dr. Schoen The field of complementary and alternative medicine is rapidly expanding in both human and veterinary medical practice. This North American text seeks to cover the current state of the art in the veterinary profession. It is a lucid and highly informative book suitable for both students new to the field and established practitioners. I am sure it will remain a definitive source of information on these issues for the foreseeable future. "Complementary and alternative medicine" should be viewed as an umbrella term encompassing an array of very different conceptual approaches and techniques. Thus, for an comprehensive text in this field, the sheer volume and diversity of subject matter that needs to be addressed can present a problem. In order to tackle this diversity, the editors systematically divide the book into nine Units (each comprising a number of chapters) and seven Appendices (which list further sources of information). This successfully allows each topic to be viewed within its broader framework and allows easy reference to specific subject areas. The first introductory chapter (in Unit 1 Fundamentals) covers some of the underlying philosophy and history from a Western perspective. The diverse group of therapeutic systems involved unfolds, and care is taken to point out some of the complexity of these different approaches. The Units that follow (Units 2 to 6) cover the following: nutrition (from preventative to cancer therapy); physical medicine (including acupuncture, Chinese herbs, chiropractic care and massage); energetic medicine, botanical medicine (including Western herbal, Chinese and Ayurvedic); and homeopathy. A "Miscellaneous Therapies" unit then covers environmental medicine, aromatherapy and Bach flower remedies.

Steven Paul Marsden, DVM, ND, MSOM, L.Ac, Dipl.C.H. Edmonton, Alberta
Canada T6E 4A5
A zeal for alternative medicine characterizes the career of Dr. Steve Marsden, yet when he received his doctorate in veterinary medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in 1988, he had no interest in alternative medicine whatsoever. His chief interest and ambition at that time was the veterinary treatment of wild and exotic animals. To this end he studied at the Toronto Metropolitan Zoo and the Calgary Zoo, as well as founded the Wild and Exotic Animal Medicine Society, a wildlife rehabilitation service at University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Marsden went on to found a highly successful small and exotic animal practice in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and it was there that his interest in alternative medicine was first sparked. Like most veterinary practitioners, he was skeptical of alternative medicine, but weary of the inadequacies of conventional medicine. Intrigued by the acceptance of homeopathy among British veterinarians, Dr. Marsden began to try it on his patients. Two years of patient experimentation later, and he was able to see homeopathy succeed where conventional treatments had failed. After witnessing the effectiveness of homeopathy, Dr. Marsden resolved to get additional training. He wanted to become as competent and confident with alternative medicine as he was with conventional medicine, and in as many disciplines as possible. To this end, he sold his practice and enrolled the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon. Five years later, Dr. Marsden had obtained a doctorate in Naturopathic medicine, a Master's of Science in Oriental Medicine, his licensure in acupuncture and his diplomate status in Chinese herbology.

Bathing Your Bird

Rub-a-dub-dub. Put a little "tub" inside the birdcage and watch Polly splish-splash around. But don’t push her in: not all birds need to bathe, and too much water can be a very bad thing.
Keeping Your Dog’s Face Out of the Cat’s Bowl

It isn’t a good idea for cats and dogs to "share" each others food—nor should your senior pooch split his special diabetic diet with the young, pregnant canine that sleeps down the hall from him.
