Parkvets: "Alternative" Veterinary Medicine - Your Critical Appraisal Required
by Graham Peck
Introduction
This article provides information for owners who may be considering "alternative" treatment for their pets. The aim is to take a critical look at "alternative" veterinary medicine. It is then up to you to decide, using information from this article and other sources whether you feel the validity of particular "alternative" medicine regime has been proven to your own satisfaction. I feel a questioning attitude by an owner to any proposed treatment regime is desirable and not just for "alternative" treatments but for conventional veterinary medicine as well. Trust in your pet's healthcare advisors is necessary, but blind acceptance is not the responsible approach. Why should you be concerned? I qualified as a vet in the mid 1980's. One was aware of osteopathy, chiropractic and acupuncture, but no information was provided about the claims of these treatment regimes in relation to animals at veterinary college. Ones interest was piqued since they appeared to be novel and condoned by human medicine. This was reinforced by the occasional anecdotal story of a "miracle" cure of someone's cat or dog. Nevertheless to most vets acupuncture etc remained a fringe aspect of veterinary medicine. Since that time a large number of additional "alternative" medicine practices have appeared primarily for human treatment but increasingly adopted for use in animals. My concern lies with the way that this whole class of practices is achieving acceptance by veterinary surgeons, owners, professional bodies and the politicians with seemingly little scrutiny of what they are buying into.

This club was started in 1993 and serves to inform students of the holistic method of treating animals' health problems. Holistic topics include:
  • acupuncture chiropractic herbal therapies homeopathy nutrition and other alternative modalities.
An emphasis is also placed on behavior - normal and abnormal - since students do not have a course in behavior (although there is an elective). Topics are based on the club members' interests. Speakers include those in the vet school, Knoxville veterinarians who use alternative treatments, and once a year a speaker from another part of the country is brought in to discuss behavior or alternative medicine. In 1996, the AVMA established guidelines with respect to alternative medicine. Hopefully, this club will open doors for many students with these interests. Contact the for more information.

Home Services Staff Current Events ... In the News Alternative Medicine Alternative medicines are not only becoming more popular for people, but also for our furry, feathered and scaly friends. At Selkirk Veterinary Hospital we offer Alternative Veterinary Medicine. The following are a brief look at some of the alternative treatments we offer. Holistic Approach
Holistic veterinary medicine is a comprehensive approach to healthcare employing alternative and conventional diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.
In practice, holistic veterinary medicine incorporates, but is not limited to, the principles of acupuncture and acutherapy, botanical medicine, chiropractic, homeopathy, massage therapy, nutraceuticals, and physical therapy, as well as conventional therapy, surgery, and dentistry. A holistic philosophy stresses the integration of external and internal influences on the animal. Holistic therapies are designed to intervene at the appropriate level and to work with, not against, the inborn systems of the body. This differs from conventional philosophy, which treats symptoms, sometimes in isolation from the entire health picture of the animal.
At the Selkirk Veterinary Hospital, we believe in using whatever types of therapy are available that may help a pet's particular problem, whatever they be conventional or alternative. If you prefer that we begin a treatment using only complementary or alternative medicine, please let us know and we will be happy to explain the options available to you.

Letter: Homeopathy and Alternative Medicine
By Clifton Blincoe Several recent articles and commentaries on homeopathy and alternative medicine have been very interesting ( S. Bunk, The Scientist, [18]:1,Sept. 14, 1998 and D.Viza, The Scientist, [18]:8, Sept. 14, 1998 ). I spent most of my professional life studying the biochemistry of domestic mammals. I suggest that studies of homeopathy and other alternative treatments be studied on noncompanion domestic mammals. This choice of subjects would largely avoid psychosomatic effects. If these treatments are effective in animals, there would be a much stronger case for extensive study and use in [humans]. Such studies might also contribute to veterinary medicine. There is a small literature available. For example, Medline listed 66 references under 'veterinary homeopathy,' most of which appeared to be commentary rather than controlled studies.

The Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine is situated on the Madingley Road about as far from the centre of town as it is from the John Barleycorn pub in Coton. Following extensive refurbishment it is home to the growing number of enthusiastic and good-looking graduate students who are attached to its various research divisions. Ian McConnell has recently been appointed Professor of Veterinary Science and enquiries from aspiring graduate students should be made direct to the office of this friendly and approachable Scot. A number of studentships are available each year and most, but not all, are taken up by recently qualified veterinary surgeons. The research fields covered are numerous and include: neurology, molecular genetics, virology, immunology, platelet function, equine studies and animal welfare. Dr David Sargan, University Lecturer in molecular genetics, graduate tutor and lover of folk music, smiles benevolently as students present their research findings at his regular seminar sessions. These meetings are an important part of the graduate calendar and have a remarkable record of attendance. Besides a superb suite of new laboratories, the facilities for graduate students include the opportunity for liaison with the clinical staff as well as access to a full range of computer equipment and a very well stocked library that is only a stone's throw from an equally well stocked canteen. Jan and Joan's catering has yet to earn them a second Michelin star or a write up from Michael Winner, but their sausage rolls, vegetarian burgers and coconut macaroons have won them many friends. Dr Josh Slater particularly recommends the iced buns.

Introduction:
Traditional Western medicine is excellent in diagnosing disease and in treating acute disease. However, the treatment of chronic immune disease and cancer have yet to achieve the same level of success. Part of this is due to the fact that these conditions respond slowly and best when the healing system is taken into account during the treatment process. Eastern medicine, which involves long-term changes in "life-style", has many aspects which make it better in treating chronic conditions, since the goal of Eastern medicine is to support the healing system. A new concept which is beginning to take hold in the West is "Integrative Medicine", where the best of both Western and Eastern medicine are combined to offer the patient the best chances of returning to health. If an animal breaks its leg, it needs to be taken to an emergency facility to have it diagnosed and "set". Once this has been performed, then the patient needs to heal, by whatever means supports that best. This series of pages is designed to explain certain changes in diet, life-style and supplements for which there is ample scientific evidence to suggest that they will help animals stay healthy and to assist them when healing from disease. Many of the recommendations are good for all dogs, while others recommendations are made for specific conditions. Some of the measures should be initiated early in the life of the dog, so that their maximal impact in improving the dog's "life-style" can be seen. Other measures should be added as the dog ages to help maintain health through all phases of life. The effects of "lifestyle" changes will always be seen; however, these measures are better at preventing disease, than stopping it when the disease process is far advanced. It is never to soon for healthy choices. As with any form of medication or treatment protocol, consult with your veterinarian about the appropriateness of these suggestions for your dog.
