Traditional Chinese herbal medicine has existed for 3-4 thousand years. It has been continually modified over this time. The formulas we use are based on ancient recipes but modified by us after trials in our clinic. Animals have diseases humans do not have. For this reason, we believe it is important to use medications designed for them, rather than use herbal remedies designed for humans. We are committed to providing the best herbal supplements possible. We have some of our more commonly used formulations in pre-packaged, pre-labeled bottles. However, we currently have over 100 formulas available. If a veterinarian has a patient with a condition not covered by one of our prepackaged formulas, we invite him or her to contact us for specific formulas.

SUBSCRIBE Alternative Therapies for Horses By Charlene Strickland Promoting Performance with Alternative Veterinary Medicine You’ve planned the season’s shows, working out the details of entries, trainer, van and tack. The focal point remains your horse’s performance—how will you maintain your equine athlete’s mental and physical strengths? Performance depends on wellness, and today you can choose among conventional and alternative therapies. While traditional veterinary medicine will probably be your initial choice, systems like acupuncture and chiropractic can resolve physical problems. Conventional modalities, or approaches to therapy, rely on drugs or other intervention, yet they can’t succeed in every case. For issues that challenge even conventional veterinary medicine, holistic veterinary medicine goes beyond “fix the problem” and considers the whole horse. Instead of following step-by-step, “cookbook” directions, holistic views consider the animal in context. Kimberly Henneman, DVM, Park City, UT, said, “Look at the whole animal, and consider emotional problems, stress and environment.” Just as human medicine accepts other teachings and techniques, equine practitioners also realize the benefits of alternative therapies. These methods—many the same that you may have experienced in your own medical treatments—may help your horse stay sound, healthy, energetic and content.

Many alternative therapies are traditional practices that have been used by non-western cultures for thousands of years—Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture or Indian Ayurvedic medicine, for example. Alternative medicine encompasses a wide variety of therapies and treatments that until recently have largely been practiced outside of mainstream western medicine. As many of these therapies demonstrate their usefulness, they have become more widely available and better understood, leading many to prefer the term "complementary medicine". This name acknowledges the view that alternative practices offer treatments that work with and complement conventional western medicine. Therapies termed "holistic" typically mean that the health care practitioner considers the whole animal, including physical, mental, and emotional aspects.
As alternative medicine becomes an increasingly common component of veterinary medicine, it is important to remember that these therapies are not benign and can be harmful if practiced by untrained or poorly trained individuals. When choosing this pathway use the same discretion as you would in choosing any health care practitioner, these systems are no less difficult to learn and practice than conventional ones.

Applications of Alternative Medicine
Alternative medicine offers excellent options for the treatment of animal athletes, for chronic conditions, or for geriatric care. Both dogs and horses have shown excellent responses to chiropractic manipulation, as well as acupuncture and herbal medicine. Chiropractic care provides great benefits for athletes of all species. Acupuncture can provide pain relief when dealing with arthritis.

53. Complementary And Alternative Veterinary Medicine Considered
By David W. Ramey, Bernard E. Rollin. Complementary and alternative veterinarymedicine Considered is a book that belongs in your veterinary library.
http://store.blackwell-professional.com/0813826160.html
By David W. Ramey, Bernard E. Rollin Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine Considered is a book that belongs in your veterinary library. If you are a veterinarian wondering if you should incorporate complementary and alternative veterinary medicine (CAVM) into your practice, if you have recently hired an associate eager to try such things as acupuncture or homeopathy, or if you have clients asking you about chiropractic, herbal, or magnetic field therapy for their pets, you’ll want to understand the history, science and ethics behind such therapies. In its 2001 Guidelines for Complementary and Alternative Medicine , the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recognizes the growing interest in CAVM, and encourages the critical examination of these therapies using the scientific method. Following the AVMA’s lead on this subject, Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine Considered thoroughly examines a variety of CAVM therapies and asks important questions regarding alternative treatments. For example, is acupuncture effective in pain relief? What is homeopathy? What is the history behind chiropractic? What does the research say (and not say) about various CAVM modalities? And, just as importantly, what are the ethical and regulatory considerations concerning such therapies? This book has the answers to those questions and more. Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine Considered will help practicing veterinarians to make informed decisions about specific CAVM therapies. This text evaluates various prevalent therapies, and will give veterinarians the ethical and scientific bases they need to make sound decisions regarding CAVM therapies.

    Healing or Health Fraud?
    A Critique of Evidence-deficient Medicine
With Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Alternative Medicine Recently I encountered a man who spent his entire life savings on an alternative "therapy" that failed to improve his health. In fact careful scientific research has repeatedly shown the treatment to be worthless. Therapists who ignore evidence and misrepresent potential health benefits are practicing deception. Health improvement promises should be based upon adequate research and testing. Disregard for evidence is found in all sectors of the health care industry but is particularly noticeable among advocates of "alternative" practices. These include naturopathy, iridology, reflexology, Reiki, Rolfing, Traditional Chinese Medicine, therapeutic touch, homeopathy, cranio-sacral therapy, crystal therapy, chelation therapy, blood cell analysis, energy therapy, intuitive therapy, and others. Claims regarding many of these practices are evidence-deficient and some have been largely discredited. For example, several recently published analyses warn that "the quality of trials of traditional Chinese medicine must be improved urgently," "naturopathic medicine is an eclectic assortment of pseudoscientific, fanciful, and unethical practices" and “there is no good evidence to date that homeopathic remedies are effective treatments for any condition in human or in veterinary medicine.” Consumers must be vigilant and investigate the quality of evidence, if any, supporting purported therapies.

First Canadian study of alternative veterinary medicine
April 24, 1996 - A growing interest in holistic medicine among veterinarians and pet owners has prompted a unique new study at the Ontario Veterinary College. For the first time, a formal research project at a Canadian veterinary school is being staged to study the efficacy of herbal and homeopathic products for pain and cancer treatment in dogs. A practice-based clinical trial begins this spring under the supervision of population medicine professor Brenda Bonnett, with epidemiology graduate student Carol Poland. The clinical trial will have applications to human medicine and may answer questions about the placebo effect in humans, Poland says. The study will also involve a critical evaluation of existing scientific literature pertaining to human and animal alternative medicine, led by Bonnett. A recent computer search found more than 1,000 articles on alternative veterinary medicine published since 1984 throughout the world. These articles will be translated, critically appraised and posted on the World Wide Web as a resource. Holistic medicine is an umbrella term that includes the four main therapies of homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic and herbal medicine, as well as many other therapies such as aromatherapy, magnetic therapy and touch therapy.
