Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine: Principles and Practice

ALTHOUGH this text is slated more for the veterinarian with an interest in exploring and/or implementing alternative care within their practice, its a wealth of information for the lay-person seeking detailed descriptions and applications of the various modalities, as well. Chapters cover fundamentals, nutrition, physical medicine (traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage therapy, and TTouch as its applied to canine, feline, and equine), energetic medicine (magnetic therapy and photon therapy), botanical medicine (Western herbal, Chinese herbal, and Ayurvedic), homeopathy, Bach flower remedies, aromatherapy, vaccinations, and various holistic practices as applied to exotics, equine, and small animal practice. Such noted individuals as Dr. Susan Wynn, Dr. Allen Schoen, Dr. Wendell Belfield, Dr. Jean Dodds, Dr. Peggy Fleming, and Dr. Cheryl Schwartz, to name but a few, lend their expertise to this comprehensive text. Included at the end of the text is an extensive resource directory that contains web site address', suppliers, recommended reading, organizations, diagnostic software, and periodicals related to this subject. Again, geared more for the veterinarian, but can certainly be useful to the lay-person.

http://www.altvetmed.com/
Welcome Welcome to the AltVetMed Web Site, your home for finding information about complementary and alternative therapies in veterinary medicine (CAVM). The AltVetMed site was founded in January 1996, by Jan Agar Bergeron, VMD and Susan Gayle Wynn, DVM. Recently, the site was moved to a new server and has undergone its first major design overhaul since its inception. With the new design, we hope to bring you much more information than we offered in the past. When the site was first launched, there were no other sites on the Web that dealt with CAVM. The largest and most visited veterinary medicine site on the Web at that time was NetVet, and most major veterinary associations did not even have Web sites. Today, all the major veterinary associations, veterinary schools, and CAVM organizations have Web sites. Many holistic veterinarians also have their own Web sites, and many conventional veterinary practices do as well. All of these new sites provide us with the opportunity to provide links to extensive information that was unavailable six years ago. Therefore, the new, redesigned AltVetMed site will become a portal for information on CAVM, as well as selected information on conventional veterinary medicine and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in general. For information on the AltVetMed Forum, please click on the "Discussion" link in the menu bar.

Centre We keep a vast number of horses in the UK (about 1,000,000), whether for pleasure or for sport. They are incredibly willing servants and do so well for us, by and large. There is a small number of neglect cases in the UK, as in any country. These are, happily, not common and education should help to prevent such unfortunate events. There are some more common areas that the AVMC would like to flag up, however, as ‘welfare hotspots’, to which every caring owner should attend. Of course, there are others, but these points are of frequent concern to us. There are 14 main points: 1 Saddling - The general situation in the UK is not good. There are times, driving around the country, when it is tempting to ask riders to get off their horses and take a look at the saddle, so obvious are the faults. This is not negligence, on the part of most riders. They often seek the advice of the saddling industry. Much needs to be done to improve the general standard of saddling , so that horses can be ridden (and enjoyed) without pain (see saddling).

Guidelines for Alternative and Complementary Veterinary Medicine
(Approved by AVMA House of Delegates, 1996)
Preamble
Veterinary Acupuncture and Acutherapy
Veterinary acupuncture and acutherapy involve the examination and stimulation of specific points on the body of non-human animals by use of acupuncture needles, moxibustion, injections, low-level lasers, magnets, and a variety of other techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of numerous conditions in animals. Veterinary acupuncture and acutherapy are now considered an integral part of veterinary medicine. These techniques should be regarded as surgical and/or medical procedures under state veterinary practice acts. It is recommended that educational programs be undertaken by veterinarians before they are considered competent to practice veterinary acupuncture.
Veterinary Chiropractic
Veterinary Physical Therapy
Veterinary physical therapy is the use of noninvasive techniques, excluding veterinary chiropractic, for the rehabilitation of injures in non-human animals. Veterinary physical therapy performed by non-veterinarians should be limited to the use of stretching; massage therapy; stimulation by use of (a) low-level lasers, (b) electrical sources, ( c ) magnetic fields, and (d) ultrasound; rehabilitative exercises; hydrotherapy; and applications of heat and cold. Veterinary physical therapy should be performed by a licensed veterinarian or, where in accordance with state practice acts, by ( I ) a licensed, certified, or registered veterinary or animal health technician educated in veterinary physical therapy or (2) a licensed physical therapist educated in non-human animal anatomy and physiology. Veterinary physical therapy performed by a non-veterinarian should be performed under the supervision of, or referral by, a licensed veterinarian who is providing concurrent care.
