~Veteran's Day~ Veteran's Day is a time for all Americans to say thank you to all men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. On this page I have included the history of Veteran's Day, my movie recommendations, holiday E-cards, Veteran's Day links and more.
~History of Veterans Day~
The courage and patriotism of all men and women who have served in the armed services of the United States are honored on Veterans Day. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th Armistice Day, but the day did not become a national holiday until 1938. Its name was changed to Veterans Day by Congress in 1954. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill into law for this day "to honor veterans...a day dedicated to world peace." Observances are held throughout the country on this federal holiday in the form of prayer services, rallies, assembly programs, parades, patriotic speeches, and grave-side flag displays. Unfortunately, Veterans Day takes on a much more poignant significance this year for all of us. As I prepared to write this piece, I reviewed my 1999 article about Veterans Day in which I called armed conflict a "remote possibility in our near future." I wish that statement would have been more accurate. This year, it's so important to teach our students that Veterans Day means more than just a day off from school. Patriotism is wide-spread at this moment in American history, so consider taking some time to give this sentiment even deeper meaning in your classroom. Here are a few ideas for introducing Veterans Day in the elementary school classroom:
  • Ask the students what they think Veteran's Day is for. Why is it important? What does the word 'veteran' mean?

Veterans Day FAQ
Q. On what day of the week will Veterans Day be observed? A. Veterans Day is always observed on November 11, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls. The Veterans Day National Ceremony, like most ceremonies around the nation, is held on Veterans Day itself. When a holiday falls on a non-workday Saturday or Sunday the holiday usually is observed by the federal government on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday). Federal government closings are established by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). A complete schedule of Federal Government closings can be found on the Internet at http://www.opm.gov/oca/worksch/index.htm. State and local governments are not bound by OPM policies. State and local government closings are determined locally. Non-government enterprises are free to close or remain open for business, regardless of federal, state or local government closings. Q. Why do some schools close and others remain in session on Veterans Day?

Veterans Day Resources (November 11)
On November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m., the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the Armistice was signed which ended the first World War. Thereafter, November 11 was celebrated as Armistice Day, with Congress making the date a federal holiday in 1938. After World War II, the date became known as Veterans Day, a change recognized by Congress in 1954, declaring it a day to honor all American veterans of all wars. In 1971, Veterans Day became a holiday celebrated on the fourth Monday in October, but it was returned to its original date, November 11, on 1977. BPL Resources

History of Veterans' Day
In the United States, Veterans' Day is a federal holiday celebrated on November 11. To many, it is just another day off from school or work. But to veterans - men and women who have served our country in the armed forces - the day has a much deeper meaning. To them, it symbolizes the commitment they made to our country while serving in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, or Coast Guard. Since many veterans fought in wars for the United States, Veterans' Day is a reminder to us that these people risked their lives in order to ensure peace for our nation. Veterans' Day was originally called Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I, when Germany surrendered at 11 o'clock on November 11, 1918. For four years, Europe had been at war, and over 14 million people had lost their lives when it finally came to an end. Since the United States had joined the fight to end World War I, many Americans had fought and died for the cause as well.

Chicago, Illinois The Sears Roebuck mass-merchandising, mail-order company was founded in 1886 and quickly became one of the largest such operations in the world. Between the last decade of the nineteenth century and the beginning of World War II, its name became synonymous with American retailing. While most people know that Sears sold nearly everything for the home from its mail order catalogue few realize that it also sold the house as well. They started to offer building supplies and house plans in 1895. Between 1908 and 1940 Sears operated a "Modern Homes" division that supplied building plans, materials and kit houses shipped by rail to all corners of the nation. The images in this section are all drawn from the pages of the Sears Roebuck "Modern Homes" catalogues and represent what we believe to be a complete rendering of all the bungalow models offered by the company in its history. Interior views of specific models, when available, are also shown. The Bungalows of Sears Roebuck, 1908 - 1940

Grand Prix by Kettler Spring Playground Spring is a time of rebirth. Have a great spring season this year!! Lots of changes happen to our environment in the springtime. Rains fall and wash away all the dirt and grime of fall and winter. Rain helps prepare our soil for planting, flowers spring up and streams and rivers flow freely. Trees and shrubs that lay dormant in the winter spring to life with green leaves and small flowers or berries. There are spectacular lighting shows and a warmer breeze starts to flow. This spring you can busy yourself cleaning up your yard or preparing flower beds and gardens for planting. Take some time and decorate some ceramic pots for planting beautiful flowers or vines. How about cleaning out your room and storage closet. You can have a garage sale to recycle these items. Visit garage sales yourself to find some great deals on cool stuff. Spring is one of the best times to visit petting zoos, zoos and farms. There are always lots of baby animals to see and fawn over. Is there anything cuter than a brand new baby animal? I don't think so.
