EDITORIAL Monday, June 07, 2004 Subscribe! More Editorial Editorial News Archives for: Mon Tue Wed Thu ... Sun Federal money is for downtown St. Albans
By Bernie Sanders
An editorial in the Free Press ("Wal-Mart's Bernie," June 4) attacked me for "promoting" Wal-Mart, saying that I secured $1.2 million in federal funding to "smooth traffic flow at the proposed site for a Wal-Mart store in St. Albans."
Wow, did the Free Press editors get that wrong! They were not even close.
The funding that I am trying to bring into St. Albans is for a project that has absolutely nothing to do with Wal-Mart. I hope readers will consider the facts that the Free Press somehow neglected to check.

Opportunity Scholarships

This program is administered and funded by the College. Opportunity Scholarships are awarded to cover need that cannot be met through other sources. Students who receive Opportunity Scholarships and are eligible for a Federal Stafford Loan and/or the Federal Work-Study Program are expected to take advantage of that eligibility to the extent possible. Failure to do so might indicate that the student has other resources available to cover need. All students who receive Opportunity Scholarships are required to maintain at least a 2.0 grade-point average. Students who earn less than this standard will have their case reviewed by the Academic Standards and Policy Committee to determine whether or not the College should continue to fund them.

The General Assembly: The Dividing Line of Centuries
Talk by Gregory Sanford, Vermont State Archivist
Snelling Center for Government
Orientation for new legislators
Vermont Statehouse, January, 1999 While I was pleased to be invited to address you today, once I started preparing this talk, I began to wonder why. It occurred to me what I had so casually agreed to was no less than presenting the whole complex history of the General Assembly in a half hour or less, during lunch, to people who are probably already suffering from information overload. I suspect you are beginning to feel the weight of legislative tradition. Afterall you are joining an institution that has been in existence 220 years. We are meeting in a building that has housed the legislature for over 140 years in a town that has hosted government for 190 years. The fact that so much effort has gone into recreating the state house to its 1856 splendor only adds to the sense of legislative continuity. Not to mention all the procedures, rules, and protocols you are learning that exude years of organizational activity and tradition. To demonstrate the pull of legislative tradition, let me quote from the 1968 House Journal. "Mr. Speaker; It is our habit, here in these hallowed halls, to cling rather tenaciously to tradition. We accept with reluctance changes and innovations. . .

  • Village in the town of Rockingham Windham County Altitude ASL: 309 feet Named for Colonel Benjamin Bellows, one of the original grantees of Rockingham . Vermont tends think of him as one of her own, but in fact he lived across the river in Walpole, New Hampshire. The colonel gained his rank in the British army, serving in several of the wars against the French in North America. His last military service was in the colonial cause at the battles of Hubbardton and Bennington A skilled surveyor, Bellows surveyed most of the towns on both sides of the Connecticut River that were later granted by Benning Wentworth . The Colonel is said to have held title to some 9,000 acres in Vermont and New Hampshire at the time of his death in 1777. The village has served as a river and overland crossroads for commerce and travel by foot, stagecoach, riverboat, train, truck and automobile. Its "golden eras" blossomed with the local application of new technologies, from canal to railroad to paper and farm machinery manufacturing.
