Slobodanka Dana Kitic '03
When Dana Kitic decided to get her Master of Arts in Teaching, she already had many years of experience teaching English as a foreign language. Dana was familiar with SIT's international reputation and the work of several of its faculty members. More than that, she felt that she recognized SIT's "spirit and way of thinking." Says Dana, "SIT was the best choice for me. I wanted to learn with and from my teachers. I wanted multicultural understanding and a place where differences are welcomed and respected: individual, ethnic, sexual, cultural, political. I also believed that the best way to learn is through your own experience." Back in Serbia, Dana often employs the skills and knowledge she gained at SIT. "I use them everywhere," says Dana, who feels her expectations of SIT were met and exceeded. Not only did she find "the courage to teach," but also, says Dana, "I met a lot of soul friends at SIT from all over the worldthose who share the same beliefs and cherish the same hopes. I'm part of a professional family now." Dana received a PhD in linguistics in 1996 from Belgrade University. She is vice dean of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Nis, in southeastern Serbia, where she teaches English and Methodology. She also teaches a course in English for Young Politicians at the Committee of Civic Initiative Language Center, an NGO in Nis established during the first civic protests in Serbia during 1996 and 1997.

Midnight for Charlie Bone Reviewed by Margaux C. 7 Orange
Author: Jenny Nimmo
Genre: action, fantasy, fiction, and mystery
Sequels: Charlie Bone and the Time Twister (Book #2) and Charlie Bone and the Invisible Boy (Book 3)
Midnight for Charlie Bone is an intriguing tale of a magical boy, his magical family, and a magical mystery. After discovering that he has the power to hear the voices of people in photographs, Charlie is sent to Bloor’s Academy, where he is to learn with other magical and gifted children. The students are divided by their exceptional abilities: Art (green capes are worn by these students) Drama (purple capes) and Music (Charlie’s category, and he wears a blue cape). Soon into the story comes a mysterious silver suitcase, containing an “awakening” secret… read the book to find what it holds in it’s silvery grasp…
This book was an excellent one for many reasons. One of these is that the characters, plot, and descriptiveness of the story were outstanding. Jenny Nimmo clearly describes Charlie’s adventures and mishaps, friends and enemies. And all of these are interesting, too. Each is unique. For example, Charlie’s music tutor and friend, Fidelio, has an exceptionally musical family with an immense number of people in it. Also, a girl named Olivia Vertigo is wild and outgoing in the drama department, and one of Charlie’s closest friends. Thirdly, Manfred, Charlie’s evil nemesis, can (and does) hypnotize people. It is these characters that bring this amazing novel to life.

Thin Client at School Award

Demonstrating an innovative use of thin-client technology to better prepare students for college and career choices, Loogootee Junior/Senior High School in Loogootee, Indiana, won the Thin Client @ School ! Contest co-sponsored by National Semiconductor, Wyse Technology and Citrix Systems. "We are thrilled to take home the first Thin Client @ School Award. With thin-client technology, our vision of improving our students' career skills and expanding our career center to reach out to the community have become a reality," said John Canfield, principal of Loogootee Jr./Sr. High School. In its award-winning proposal, Loogootee Jr./Sr. High School, located 85 miles southwest of Indianapolis, outlined an ambitious plan to use thin clients to transform its current career center into a fully accessible Career Futures eCenter in partnership with a local university. Available to students, educators, parents and people in the community, the new eCenter will provide information regarding careers and educational opportunities via thin clients. According to the school, each high school student will use the center and its resources to make informed career and continuing education decisions. Additional thin-client licenses will give teachers throughout the district better access to the Internet and productivity software for curriculum development.
