a granite monument with a bronze plaque at Norwich, vermont, to commemorate the depleted the student body of the University, for Norwich was a military school.
    http://www2.uiuc.edu/ro/thetachi/history/tc-national.htm
    Theta Chi's Founders:
    Frederick Norton Freeman
    Arthur Chase
Theta Chi Society, as it was then known, was founded at Norwich University, Norwich, Vermont, at nine o'clock on Thursday evening, April 10, 1856.
At that time Frederick Norton Freeman '57, and Arthur Chase '56, met in Freeman's room in the Old South Barracks of the University and, to quote from the minutes of the first meeting, "being called to order by Mr. Chase, Messrs. Chase and Freeman mutually took the oaths rescribed and declared each other true and accepted members of the Theta Chi Society." From this humble beginning Theta Chi Fraternity has grown to its present status.
To quote again from the minutes of the first meeting we learn that "The Theta Chi Society was the idea and plan of Frederick Norton Freeman, and with the assistance of Arthur Chase, his plans were perfected and the society was organized." Chase was elected president and Freeman was elected secretary. The next evening, April 11, the first initiation was conducted. One of the initiates was Edward Bancroft Williston of San Diego, California, and the other was Lorenzo Potter of Elkhorn, Wisconsin.
The historical facts of the founding of Theta Chi were taken from old minute books, old correspondence, and the personal recollections of Alpha members who related, many years later, what had been passed on to them.

NO. 120. AN ACT RELATING TO THE CRIME OF HAZING. (S.76) It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont: Sec. 1. STATEMENT OF POLICY The general assembly has been made increasingly aware that harassment and hazing have become a major and pervasive problem within our schools, and that students who are continually filled with apprehension and anxiety are unable to learn and unlikely to succeed. Therefore, it is the policy of the state of Vermont that all Vermont educational institutions provide safe, orderly, civil and positive learning environments. Harassment, hazing and bullying have no place and will not be tolerated in Vermont schools. No Vermont student should feel threatened or be discriminated against while enrolled in a Vermont school.

In California's 1993 elections, proponents argued that school vouchers would reduce public expenditures and drive school reform; opponents claimed that they would reduce public-school quality without saving money at all. Written to help voters sort out the competing claims, this report highlights the relative costs of using vouchers as outlined in that proposition. The findingsbased on a complex simulation analysis of student enrollment, tax revenues and other trends over the next decademay shed light on future voucher proposals and other school reform initiatives.

    One Room School House

Recent television news coverage revealed Chelsea Clinton and her mother checking out New England colleges. Such a scene is but one straw in the wind, indicating the imminence of an event deplored by children and welcomed by mothers...the first day of school.
The golden days of summer dwindle down, the last of them becoming whirlwinds of activity. Soon-to-be scholars choose their back-to-school outfits. They stock up on notebooks and supplies. Some can hardly wait for opening day. Others approach it with all the enthusiasm of 18th-century French nobles going to the guillotine.
The majority of children will attend traditional schools, public or private. A minority will opt for alternatives. Home schooling, once a necessity for pioneers and those in isolated locations, is enjoying a resurgence of popularity. Parents may choose it because they are dissatisfied with the quality of available schooling, because they are unhappy with the curriculum, or because they wish their offspring to be taught in accordance with their own beliefs and religious convictions.
Whatever the setting for September's students, very few will be returning to one-room schoolhouses. True, some of these still exist but for the most part, this old-time school has vanished. I feel lucky to have attended one. Two, actually.

Comparing being governor of Vermont with commanding the US European Command
    By ErikaEM
Posted to ErikaEM's weblog News and Links ) on Sat Dec 20th, 2003 at 05:47:21 PM EST In the 60 min II interview, Dan Rather brought up the idea that Clark's experience commanding the US European command is a rather lot like being mayor of a large town ( http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/11/19/60II/main584555.shtml ) so that got me thinking, how does Clark's experience compare with being Governor of a small state like, say, Vermont?  Here's what I found. Number of military personnel permanently assigned to EUCOM now( Number of school children under Clark's command: (According to Clark in the 60 min II interview) Number of military spouses Clark would also have been responsible for:  I couldn't find exact data for this, but according to http://www.defenselink.mil/prhome/poprep2001/appendixb/b_24.htm  in 2001, 48.18% of active component enlisted military members were married.  Some of them were married to each other, so we'll round that down to 45% having civilian spouses, and assume that EUCOM was representative of the military as a whole. That gives us 116,400 * .45 = approx military spouses.

And such soldiers, too! bravest among the brave; none better ever adorned the history of any State or Nation. We owe to these noble men, living or dead, an imperishable debt of gratitude, love and honor." newly elected Vermont Governor Paul Dillingham , Inaugural address, 1865. The Vermont Civil War Hemlocks are dedicated to proudly and accurately portraying the common Vermont infantry and artillery soldier during the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865. One of the oldest Civil War living history organizations, the Hemlocks take their name from the spring of evergreen worn as an identifying badge in the caps of Vermont troops. The Hemlocks were founded in 1963, during the one hundredth anniversary of the Civil War, by Andrew Fisher, a history teacher at Concord High School. As part of the Expo weekend the Hemlocks will set up a campsite, with period tents, flags, and cook fire, on the fair grounds. Group members will engage in the activities of the Civil War soldier - marching, drilling, posting guard, writing letters, and cooking meals. Expo attendees can walk through the campsite, talk to the soldiers, and learn more about the life of the Vermont volunteer nearly 140 years ago. Cannon-firings will take place between 10:00 - 10:30 a.m. and 4:00 - 4:30 p.m. both days.
