Legal Research:
The first semester Legal Research course, which is a component of Legal Reasoning, Writing and Research, focuses on research sources and strategies to integrate book, commercial online services such as Westlaw and Lexis, and Internet research. Course evaluations for Legal Research are among the highest at the law school and the librarians tend to remain mentors to our students throughout their law school careers. Advanced Legal Research is also available as an elective for second and third year students. In-class legal research sessions covering the latest and most relevant resources and research strategies are presented regularly for substantive classes such as Torts, Tax Law, Administrative Law, Global Climate Change, Environmental Law, International Human Rights, Air Pollution, Anthropology of the Law, etc. Summer Associate/Research Review seminars are also offered each spring. Individual instruction is available at any time. VLS students graduate with the skills, strategies and techniques needed to respond to their immediate legal research needs as well as to the changing nature of legal research throughout their careers. When students graduate from VLS they should have a firm understanding of legal research using books, the Internet, Westlaw, Lexis, and other legal services.

    http://www.slis.ua.edu/ala/vermont.htm
    Vermont Public Library Certification Information
Voluntary Plan- The voluntary plan is for public librarians who do not have a library school degree. The State Department of Libraries issues certificates upon completion of required number of workshops. Certifying Agency: Certification Board of the Department of Libraries. The Board consists of the State Librarian, the Continuing education Coordinator (Chair), the President of the Vermont Library Association, a public librarian, and a public library trustee. Requirements: 150 classroom hours of workshops accumulated within five years. The department of Libraries staff teaches all necessary workshops, but credit may be given for workshops and courses taken outside the Department of Libraries. In the case of multiple day Department workshops, credits are weighted according to the continuity of attendance. For example: Three-day and Five-day* Workshops
1 day of attendance = credits
    2 days =5
    3 days =15
    *4 days =20
*5 days =25 Attendance records for workshop and course are kept on file with the Continuing Education Coordinator in Montpelier. It is the responsibility of the individual to notify the Department upon satisfactory completion of any pertinent courses or workshops not sponsored by the Department. Documentation should be provided, such as a grade report, transcript, or letter from the instructor. The maximum number of credits allowed for each academic course complete is 30. Meetings, such as section meetings of the Vermont Library Association, which are skill-oriented and presented in a workshop-like format, may also be granted a maximum of two credits per meeting. Clearance for such credit must be obtained in advance from the Certification Board and proper documentation of attendance supplied. The Certification Board will determine how many credits an individual will receive for non-Department of Library courses.

    July 21, 2000
    Dear Gary,
Thank you for presenting your program on "Library Cats" as well as doorstops and puns for the 2000 Vermont Library Conference on May 24, 2000.
Our participants felt that your program was the perfect entertaining way to end a full day of sessions which were largely technical and instructive.
The evaluations from participants on your program were very positive, with 64% rating your program "excellent" or "very good." You did not have any ratings below "good," which is significant since of our thirty-six programs, only five of them achieved the distinction of no ratings below "good."
One person noted on the evaluation form that she felt that "Library Cats" was especially relevant because it illustrated the challenges faced by librarians that they are expected to please everyone and it was not possible.
Thank you again for joining us. If other groups are considering your program, feel free to have them contact me.
    Sincerely
