Vermont School Improvement Support Guide
1. What assessment data can be graphed with the Vermont School Improvement Guide?
2. Why are "error bars" present in some of the graphs?

3. How was the list of "similar schools" constructed?

4. Can I save a graph and use it in other programs like Microsoft Word or PowerPoint or Word Perfect?

1. What assessment data can be graphed with the Vermont School Improvement Guide? The following statewide, standardized, standards-based assessments are the basis for the website: Standards-based assessments are any assessments that provide information about how students are performing in relation to the expectations in the standards. This includes assessments such as standardized standards-based tests, criterion-referenced tests, and portfolios. It also includes classroom projects, tests, assignments, or quizzes that are aligned to the standards. For action planning, schools need to look at standards-based assessments that are administered to all students at a grade level. This includes state and local measures. The statewide, standards-based assessments (which are termed "large scale assessments") are data about the school's program - not just about the grade at which the assessment was administered. The New Standards mathematics assessment at Grade 4, for instance, reveals information about a school's elementary mathematics program.

Roughly 20% of Americans spend a good portion of their day in elementary and secondary schools. The day-to-day operations of these schools, as well as how they are designed, maintained, and renovated, may all have environmental and health impacts on the occupants and the surrounding community. Jouzaitis.Joan@epa.gov This site is organized along three major topic areas. Environmental Issues will provide information on topics such as asbestos, integrated pest management, indoor air quality, diesel bus emissions, chemical management, and underground storage tanks, to name a few. Schools install solar panels
BURLINGTON, Vt. Solar panels will be installed at the Champlain Elementary School within the next few weeks as part of a community partnership called "Solar on Schools." ADVERTISEMENT The four-year program is to provide the school with a small amount of its electrical needs while educating students about renewable energy. "Solar isn't there yet, but we believe it's a very important renewable energy source for our students to learn about," said Mary Sullivan of the Burlington Electric Department. "This will be a very good learning tool to use in the schools." The program is expected to cost $140,000. Burlington Electric won a $10,000 U.S. Department of Energy grant to get started and is raising the rest of the money by asking Burlington electricity consumers to make monthly donations of between $3 and $10. Sullivan said the department has received pledges of more than $1,000 a month through its initial mailing of information to local customers.

The following table summarizes expenses from fiscal years 1993 to 1997. There is no activity prior to FY1993 that could be construed to be related to "GOVnet." It is important to note that not until FY1996 were finances segregated into the areas that could be identified as administration, state network infrastructure, and Internet access. The fiber-optic network, which is a core of the current network, evolved out of the HRMS project. Fiscal 1993 estimates [ Klein, Stephen A., Duncan W. Goss, Donald E. Dickson, Jr., "Study of Vermont State Data Processing System Purchases and Vermont State Information Systems Planning and Design," Joint Fiscal Office and Legislative Council, December 29, 1993, p.7.] of the costs not attributable to HRMS are $1,128,900. From a financial perspective, these are sunk costs, both operating and capital, and not comparable to any future expenses. During fiscal years 1994 and 1995 administration of the network and financial segregation of its revenues and expenses were in transition. For those two fiscal years it is only possible to obtain

There is a growing need for schools to produce citizens who have not only knowledge about civil issues such as how a bill becomes a law, but also a set of values about why citizenship is important and a set of civic skills that gives students a sense of efficacy and a commitment to be active, principled citizens. Every Student A Citizen: Creating the Democratic Self In response to the sense of national urgency around revitalizing the civic mission of our schools, the Education Commission of the States (ECS), through its service-learning project, the Compact for Learning and Citizenship (CLC), launched the Every Student A Citizen initiative. The initiative's goal is to engage all students in active citizenship and help education leaders meet schools academic and civic missions. To meet this goal and with funding from The Ford Foundation, CLC created the National Study Group on Citizenship in K-12 Schools, a 21-member group comprised of K-12 and university teachers and students as well as representatives from national education organizations. The National Study Group's report, Every Student A Citizen: Creating the Democratic Self, recommends steps that schools and districts, states and national organizations can take to improve civic participation through service-learning.
