Vermont is boardered on the east by New Hampshire, which has no Federally Recognized Indian Tribes.
Vermont is boardered on the south by Massachussetts, which has one Federally Recognized Indian Tribe, located on the western end of Martha's Vinyard, the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah).
Vermont is boardered in the west by New York, which has nine Federally Recognized Indian Tribes. The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe (Akwesasne) is near Vermont, but the rest of the reservations are in central and western New York, about as remote to Vermont as Martha's Vinyard. "Although Vermont does not have any Indian land, we lose tax revenues from sales made from Indian lands near our borders. It would be extremely unfortunate if the problem were allowed to grow. I will be pleased to lend my support to this bill." Gov. Howard Dean (D-VT) to Rep. Ernest J. Istook Jr. (R-OK), June 1997, supporting a bill aimed at limiting the ability of Indian tribes' businesses to escape some state and local taxes. To which Indian lands was Howard refering? How much sales tax revenues has Vermont lost to the Mohawks and the Wampanoags? I know the Wampanoags sell tee-shirts, polos and coffee cups all with the Tribe's seal. Maybe the Mohawks sell roadmaps.

Excerpts from Earth in Upheaval, The Ivory Islands
    by Velikovsky, page 4-6
Fossil tusks of the mammoth - an extinct elephant - were found in northern Siberia and brought southward to markets at a very early time. Northern Siberia provided more than half the world's supply of ivory, many piano keys and many billiard balls being made from the fossil tusks of mammoths. In 1797 the body of a mammoth, with flesh, skin, and hair, was found in northeastern Siberia. The flesh had the appearance of freshly frozen beef; it was edible, and wolves and sled dogs fed on it without harm. The ground must have been frozen ever since the day of their entombment; had it not been frozen, the bodies of the mammoths would have putrefied in a single summer, but they remained unspoiled for some thousands of years. In some mammoths, when discovered, even the eyeballs were still preserved. (All) this shows that the cold became suddenly extreme .. and knew no relenting afterward. In the stomachs and between the teeth of the mammoths were found plants and grasses that do not grow now in northern Siberia .. (but are) .. now found in southern Siberia. Microscopic examination of the skin showed red blood corpuscles, which was proof not only of a sudden death, but that the death was due to suffocation either by gases or water.
Excerpts from ZetaTalk on Sinking Atlantic
As we have stated, the Atlantic will widen and the Pacific will shorten. Where the Pacific effect will cause sudden and violent subduction of several plates, which are already subducting, in the Atlantic the effect will be the opposite. A gulf will appear, with plates torn apart and the softer magma under the plates exposed to the cold Atlantic water. Where this will harden the magma, and establish new plate surface, there will be less support for the abridging plates, those that attach however remotely to the shorelines of the Americas, Europe, and Africa. These non-supported plates will sink, somewhat, bringing their formerly above-water land masses down under the water in many places. As an instance, Europe and in particular the western islands of Britain and Ireland will find itself more affected than some other parts of the globe.

It it difficult, and will take quite some time, to do justice to Boston, of course. In the early 1800s, it was the intellectual capital of the U.S. It has one of the finest harbors on the east coast. Originally, it was almost an island, connected to the mainland by "Boston neck", a strip just wide enough for one road (one of the reasons it could hold out so long in its rebellion against the English). Over the years, the neck was widened until it became wider than the "head" attached to it. Part of this filling-in process created the Back Bay. See Whitehill, Boston, A Topographical History

For more than 100 years, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been assessing, mapping, and reporting on Vermont's earth resources. Ongoing USGS programs include topographic and geologic mapping, surface- and ground-water-data collection, water-quality assessment, research on the effects of global change, assessment of hydrologic and geologic hazards, biological resources, and mineral exploration. The USGS, through cooperative programs with many Federal, State and local agencies, contributes to the health, safety, and economic well being of Vermont's citizens.
    Topographic Mapping
Maps and digital cartographic data are used for various commercial and recreational purposes. Among the most popular and versatile products of the USGS are its 1:24,000-scale topographic maps (1 inch on the map equals 2,000 feet on the ground). These maps depict natural and cultural features of the landscape, such as lakes and streams, highways and railroads, boundaries, and geographic names. Contour lines are used to depict the elevation and shape of terrain. Vermont is covered by 213 maps at this scale. The USGS, through its National Mapping Program, fosters partnerships with Federal and State agencies to improve the effectiveness of its data-collection activities, maximize resource sharing, and enhance the availability of timely and accurate data. During 1995, the USGS and the Vermont Department of Taxes (VDT) were involved in a cooperative agreement wherein the USGS provided assistance to support the VDT's preparation of digital orthophotoquads (DOQ's) and digital elevation models (DEM's) that met USGS standards. A DOQ is derived from digitized aerial photographs and combines the image characteristics of a photograph with the geometric qualities of a map. DOQ's and DEM's have been completed for Rutland County. DOQ's are becoming increasingly useful as a component in geographic information systems (GIS) where computer-readable layers of map data can be combined with other kinds of geographic data.

Vermont - Geography It is bordered by New Hampshire, across the Connecticut R. (E), Massachusetts (S), New York, with Lake Champlain forming almost half the border (W), and the Canadian province of Quebec (N). The rivers of Vermont (the only completely inland state of New England) flow either into the Connecticut River or into Lake Champlain. The Winooski rises east of the Green Mts. and cuts directly through them to Lake Champlain. Grand Isle county, comprising several islands and a peninsula jutting down into Lake Champlain from Canada, is connected to Vermont proper by causeways. Vermont has a short summer and a humid, continental climate, with abundant rainfall and a growing season that varies from 120 days in the Connecticut valley to 150 in the Lake Champlain region. Winter brings heavy snows, which usually cover the ground for at least three full months, but because the state's good roads are almost always kept clear, this season no longer forces complete isolation on rural communities. With its rugged terrain, much of it still heavily wooded, Vermont has limited areas of arable land, but the state is well suited to grazing (the Justin Morgan breed of horses was developed there).

Geography People Government ... Physical Map Introduction [Top of Page] In 1609, French explorer Samuel de Champlain came upon a large lake in the area we know today as Vermont and named it after himself. The state's name comes from two French words vert (green) and mont (mountain), which explains Vermont's nickname, the "Green Mountain State." Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys defended their homeland from the British during the Revolutionary War. Vermont is one of the six New England states and became the 14th state in 1791. Some of Vermont's major industries are dairy farming and tourism. One of the most picturesque states, Vermont has millions of visitors each year who come to see the leaves turn colors in the fall and the snow-covered mountains in the winter. The state flower is the red clover and the tree is the sugar maple. Vermont maple syrup is one of the state's most popular products. Joseph T. Scott. "State Of Vermont Drawn and Engraved." Philadelphia: J. Scott, 1795. From United States Gazetteer This is one of the earliest American maps of Vermont, from the first American gazetteer. Joseph T. Scott, a Philadelphia engraver and publisher, issued his gazetteer during the early days of American cartography, and the maps of the individual states and territories are very good. Scott included much detail of rivers, counties, roads, and towns. This map of Vermont includes precise detail of settlements and roads, including "Govr. Chittenden"s home in the north. Also shown is Dartmouth College, just across the Connecticut River, which is not shown on the map of New Hampshire. As an early example of American cartography and an fascinating document of Vermont history, this is a gem.
    J. Denison. "A Map of the States of New Hampshire and Vermont." An excellent late eighteenth century map of New Hampshire and Vermont. This map was from Jedidiah Morse's geography, one of the first American publications of its kind. Morse, the father of Samuel F.B. Morse, established himself in the 1780's as one of the leading producers of American maps. No boundary appears between New Hampshire and Maine. Five counties can be seen in New Hampshire and eleven in Vermont.
