Geography at UVM
In the United States, many students are unfamiliar with the advanced and professional study of geography. It is not unusual for geographers to be asked what it is they "do." In response, geographers often say that we study the "why of where." This is a shorthand way of saying that geographical curiosity is grounded by an enduring interest in the patterns of human and natural phenomena, and the interaction of both, as they are manifested in particular locations, environments, and places. Just as one might say that historians study time, geographers study space.
The study of geography at the university level equips students with many of the same analytical and conceptual skills as other liberal arts disciplines, but our emphasis on understanding the spatial dimension of physical, environmental and human phenomena is unique. Further, the study of geography trains students to appreciate the importance of a broad, international, interdisciplinary and comparative perspective. A geography major provides students with technical skills, a focus on environment and society, and local/ global interpretive capacity that is increasingly important for an informed citizenry and increasingly valued by employers. A high proportion of our students go on to graduate work, in geography or cognate fields, and we have placed students at some of the best graduate programs in the country.
The University of Vermont has one of the largest Geography departments in New England. Undergraduate students who take Geography at UVM can choose from a wide range of courses, many of which will take them around the world. For example, students could sign up for regional geography courses on Canada, Vermont, Africa, USA, or Europe. Other introductory offerings include courses on the geography of race and ethnicity, "geotechniques," and our ever-popular introductory classes in world regional geography, weather and climate, and world natural environments. Intermediate-level classes include political geography, water resources, cultural ecology, geography and gender, international development and political ecology, urban geography, and intermediate courses in GIS and remote sensing. At the advanced level, we offer classes that include spatial analysis, research methods, social geography, climate and hazards, and global economic restructuring.

Lake Champlain, The Sixth Great Lake?
Dateline: 03/02/98 (Rev. 03/30/98) Matt's note: The President of the United States signed Senate Bill 927 and it became Public Law 105-160 on March 6, 1998. Therefore, Lake Champlain is now the sixth Great Lake. Additional note: Due to the wording in the law, "The term `Great Lakes' includes Lake Champlain," and its location in the "definitions" section of the law may indicate that Lake Champlain is not really designated as a Great Lake but only for the purposes of this act. Lake Champlain, located on the border of Vermont and New York and entending a few miles into Canada , is on the verge of greatness . Senate Bill 927, which reauthorizes the Sea Grant program, has been passed by the Senate and is expected to be signed by the President within the next few days. The bill not only provides funds for educational purposes but it also officially designates Lake Champlain as the sixth

ontpelier is centrally located in the State of Vermont at the confluence of the Winooski and North Branch Rivers. Montpelier's central location was one of the factors which led to its being chosen as the State capital. This central location also means that most of the state is within easy driving distance.
Montpelier has four rivers which are at least partially located within its boundaries. The Steven's Branch, Dog, and North Branch Rivers all empty into the Winooski River. The Winooski River runs east-west through the entire length of the city and eventually empties into Lake Champlain. While the city has grown around the junction of the Winooski and North Branch Rivers, its growth has been restricted by the significant hillsides which surround the city. This undulating topography provides an impressive backdrop to the city and Statehouse. The geographic context of Montpelier has always played a role in shaping the City's physical growth and appearance. Earliest development followed the low-lying valleys of the Winooski and North Branch Rivers, and progressed up the slopes of the hills that framed those valleys. Although the hills were mostly cleared in the late 19th century, today they form a wooded backdrop for the City's built environment, and the combination is now recognized as one of the City's great visual assets. The gold dome of the Capitol is accentuated both by the Statehouse's location on a rise of land and its backdrop of hillside forest. Views of downtown, looking south on Main Street, terminate in wooded hillsides. Entering Montpelier from the northeast, on Upper Main Street, the City in the foreground is set off by the distant view of Camel's Hump. Preserving the City's backdrop of wooded hillside and unbroken ridgeline should be a priority.

They consist of at least four distinct groups, all traversing the state in a generally north-south direction. Largest and most important are the Green Mts. proper, which extend down the center of the state from the Canadian border to the Massachusetts line, rising to Vermont's highest peak, Mt. Mansfield (4,393 ft/1,339 m). The Taconic Mts., occupying the southwestern portion of the state, contain Vermont's important marble deposits. East of the Green Mts. and extending from the Canadian border to somewhat below the middle of the state are the Granite Hills, so called because of their valuable stone. The fourth group, sometimes called the Red Sandrock Hills, extends along the Vermont shore of Lake Champlain. In E Vermont there are also isolated peaks or monadnocks not connected with the principal ranges. The rivers of Vermont (the only completely inland state of New England) flow either into the Connecticut River or into Lake Champlain. The Winooski rises east of the Green Mts. and cuts directly through them to Lake Champlain. Grand Isle county, comprising several islands and a peninsula jutting down into Lake Champlain from Canada, is connected to Vermont proper by causeways.

VT In 1609, French explorer Samuel de Champlain came upon a large lake in the area we know today as Vermont and named it after himself. The state's name comes from two French words vert (green) and mont (mountain). In 1791, Vermont was the 14th state to join the Union. Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys defended their homeland from the British during the Revolutionary War. Vermont is famous for the scenic Green Mountains which run the entire length of the state. Although manufacturing and a growing service industry sector are now the most important economic activities in the state, Vermont has one of the lowest percentages of city dwellers of any state. Many vacationers go to Vermont just for the beautiful scenery. In the fall, the state is ablaze with the flaming colors of turning leaves. Vermont's quiet towns and villages are also favorite scenes. The mountains, lakes and streams offer a variety of recreational activities from skiing in the winter to hiking and camping in the summer. GOVERNMENT

    Attack Geography
Hey, buddy, who do you think you're calling "bucolic"?
    By Michael Kinsley
Posted Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at 10:58 AM PT
Republicans have had a talent for geographical chauvinism since Nixon's southern strategy. Wherever a Democratic candidate happens to be from, that place turns out to be isolated and unrepresentative and not part of the real America. They are having a good time at the moment dissing Vermont, home of former Gov. Howard Dean. It's way up there in the Northeast somewhere. (Yeah, not too far south of the Bush family hangout in Maine.) It doesn't have any black people. Its best-known product is some hippie ice cream. Worst of all, it's (gasp!) "bucolic." Odd, but I don't recall these points being made by any politician, Republican or Democrat, about New Hampshire, which is adjacent to Vermont. In the next few months, as always in election years, we will be hearing repeatedly about what a wonderful place New Hampshire is. Second only to Iowa. But, Vermont—now, that's a different story. In 1988, Republicans painted Massachusetts as a foreign country and Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis as an elitist, compared with that po' boy from Texas, the elder George Bush. Massachusetts, to its credit, is a bit south of Vermont. On the other hand, it is full of universities. Need we say more?
