The Historical Geography of Vermont This chapter is broken up into three main sections Vermont's East and West Unions Montpelier: Capital of Vermont Vermont Place Names Vermont's East and West Unions Words to Know historical geography annex disband Historical geography is the study of places and how they have changed over time. As you read earlier, the boundaries of Vermont have not always been the same as they are today. You also learned how New Hampshire and New York both tried to claim the Vermont territory as part of their own states. These two states once thought of dividing the state in tworight in half down the peaks of the Green Mountains! We also know the towns along the Connecticut River in both Vermont and New Hampshire were much the same. Their settlers came from the same places in southern New England and they shared the same culture. Some settlers even wanted to have their own state centered in the Connecticut River Valley. Its capital would have been Dresden, an old town where Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, is located today. In turn, Vermont tried to

Vermont – A State Unit Study This mini unit on VERMONT uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study VERMONT. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child’s needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about VERMONT and enjoyable for all who are participating. Vermont’s State Flag Placed on a white field is a circle of thirteen gold stars representing the first thirteen states. The stars surround a gold ship's anchor. The states motto " Hope" is on a blue ribbon below the anchor. Create a State “Infodesk”: Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect. Print a blank map of the state, or draw one on tag board, that you can place on the bulletin board. As you study the political and physical features of the state, have the children fill in the name of the state capital, large cities, and major geographical features. Color the map using different shades for varying elevations.

Geography People Government ... Physical Map Introduction [Top of Page] In 1609, French explorer Samuel de Champlain came upon a large lake in the area we know today as Vermont and named it after himself. The state's name comes from two French words vert (green) and mont (mountain), which explains Vermont's nickname, the "Green Mountain State." Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys defended their homeland from the British during the Revolutionary War. Vermont is one of the six New England states and became the 14th state in 1791. Some of Vermont's major industries are dairy farming and tourism. One of the most picturesque states, Vermont has millions of visitors each year who come to see the leaves turn colors in the fall and the snow-covered mountains in the winter. The state flower is the red clover and the tree is the sugar maple. Vermont maple syrup is one of the state's most popular products.
