E-sales costing states millions

U.S. total is $13.3 billion in lost tax revenue
By Brice Wallace
Deseret News business writer The simple push of the "Enter" button to complete a purchase through the
Internet could be hurting schools, police departments and other government services. So say statistics released Tuesday in Washington, D.C., by the Institute for State Studies, located at the Salt Lake-based Western Governors University. Those stats show that state and local governments lost $13.3 billion in sales tax revenue from purchases made online, up 41 percent from a 2000 projection of $9.4 billion. In 2006, the loss is expected to be $45.2 billion. Five years later, the estimate is $54.8 billion. Skyrocketing business-to-business e-commerce activity

They are being asked to provide more services at the same time revenues are falling, but the prices for energy, health care, and insurance are going up. Communities need strategies that are sustainable, strategies that will increase their capacity to continue to meet all their needs for economic security, social services, good governance, and environmental health. Sustainable development is no longer an academic exercise or a debate that is limited to improving environmental conditions. It's the central question for all of our communities today.

Solving Sprawl: Introduction by Carl Pope, Sierra Club Executive Director Growth is good. At least that's been the American credo up to now. Blessed with lands that seemed limitless, challenged to "go west" and tame the wilderness, our history, our "manifest destiny," has been to clear the forests, cut roads through rock, pave and plow our country, and create cities. The American mission to conquer and settle the land shaped our character. And we got good at it. Too good. Now at the start of a new century and a new millennium, Americans no longer reflexively equate progress with development. In fact, because the costs and consequences of poorly planned development have become clear and common, Americans are clamoring for better, smarter ways to grow.

Dean's (In)experience as Governor of Vermont
    The San Diego Union-Tribune January 18, 2004
    Senior Fellow Foreign Policy Studies
Michael E. O'Hanlon Most critiques of Howard Dean's electability have focused on his intemperate and inconsistent remarks on foreign and domestic policy. To be sure, these are cause for serious concern. Indeed, the latest USA Today poll on the former governor shows that he is the only major Democratic candidate with much higher negatives than positives among the general population. It is only fair that this question be posed. Dean has effectively criticized his opponents for being part of the DC establishment, and indeed most of them are. Dick Gephardt, former House Democratic leader, was elected to Congress in 1976. Joe Lieberman is in his third term in the Senate, John Kerry his fourth. True, John Edwards is only in his first term as senator, and Gen. Wesley Clark has never run for national office before, but Dean has still successfully cast himself as the fresh political face against a group of has-been traditional candidates. But is Washington experience really such a bad thing? And is Dean's preparation for the presidency really so strong? If he becomes the Democratic nominee, he will do so with less big-league political experience than any major party candidate in more than half a century.

Contact us AWARD RECIPIENTS Congratulations to the 2004 Elgin Heinz Outstanding Teacher Award Receipients, Ms. Sharon Corologos and Ms. Ann McCarthy Ms. Sharon Corologos - Humanities Category Ms. Sharon Corologos teaches fourth grade at Richmond Elementary School in Richmond, Vermont. In 1984, she first started teaching her fourth graders about Japanese culture. In 1987, Corologos was accepted in the Japan Study Tour offered by the Five College Center for East Asian Studies in Amherst, MA funded by the United States-Japan Foundation. As her follow-up project, she created a handbook on teaching Japanese culture to Vermont schoolchildren, which was widely distributed to Vermont schools. Corologos continued each year to focus on teaching Japanese culture in her classroom by inviting college students from Japan and other Japanese people to her class, by involving the school's art and music teachers in the culture study, and by organizing and supporting school wide studies about Japan in her school. In various years her students have danced, sung, or exhibited at the statewide Japan-America Society's Matsuri event (Vermont chapter). As one of the recipients of the University of Vermont's Outstanding Vermont Teacher Award in 1987, Corologos has become an informal resource to other schools, and gladly shares the resources she has accumulated. In 1999, Corologos was accepted into the University of Vermont's Asian Studies Outreach Project (ASOP), and has participated in many of its offerings. Through ASOP, Corologos has mentored a Japanese intern in her classroom, attended and presented at Japanese culture workshops, and assisted as a co-leader for ASOP's Institute in Japan. In June 2004, Corologos will lead that Institute for Vermont teachers.
