It was the creation of father and son, John Henry Hopkins Sr. (1792-1868) and John Henry Hopkins Jr. (1820-1891), ministers of the Protestant Episcopal church. The elder Hopkins was born in Ireland and immigrated the United States with his family in 1800. He was elected the first bishop of the Vermont Episcopal church in 1832. An advocate of formal education, the bishop established the Vermont Episcopal Institute, a boarding school for boys, in 1833. The school failed for financial reasons in 1839, and for the next two decades Hopkins struggled to pay off the debt. John Henry Hopkins Jr. was born in Pittsburgh. After graduating with honors from the University of Vermont in 1839, he taught at this father's school and began to study law. From 1843 until 1847, when he entered the seminary, Hopkins worked in the South and in New York City helping to support the family in Burlington. In order to raise funds, the bishop and John Jr., designed and printed drawing books of landscapes, figures and flowers for schools.
