Anne Arran lecture 4th February 2003 Anne Arran was invited to the school to talk about her latest climbing adventure in Venezuela, where she and her husband John took part in an unsuccessful attenpt to climb Angel Falls, the world's highest waterfall. Later on, during the trip, they managed to make the first free ascent of maybe the hardest rock climb in South America - the huge wall of Cerro Autana - the fabled felled remains of the tree of life, according to the local Indians. Maya Broman of year 9 describes the lecture. All photos Arran collection JOURNEY INTO THE LOST WORLD On Tuesday 4th of February, the whole of Year 9 spent a period listening to one of Britain's best rock climbers, Anne Arran, who agreed to come in and talk about her adventures in South America. During her talk she showed us amazing pictures of her travels in South America and described all the events she went through. What we saw were brave and experienced climbers who had the guts to try and climb up the world's tallest waterfall, Angel Falls in Venezuela. Anne showed us pictures of lizards and enormous spiders, which are the sort of animals living in those areas.

Venezuela - Geography Officially Republic of Venezuela, republic (1992 est. pop. 20,675,000), 352,143 sq mi (912,050 sq km), N South America. Venezuela has a coastline 1,750 mi (2,816 km) long on the Caribbean Sea in the north. It is bordered on the south by Brazil, on the west and southwest by Colombia, and on the east by Guyana. Dependencies include Margarita Island, Tortuga Island, and many smaller island groups in the Caribbean. The capital and largest city is Caracas. Geographically Venezuela is a land of vivid contrasts, with four major divisions: the Venezuelan highlands, the coastal lowlands, the basin of the Orinoco River, and the Guiana Highlands. An almost inaccessible and largely unexplored wilderness south of the Orinoco, the Guiana Highlands occupy more than half of the national territory and are noted for scenic wonders such as Angel Falls. Iron ore, gold, diamonds, and other minerals are found near Ciudad Bolívar and Ciudad Guayana. The dense forests of the region yield rubber, tropical hardwoods, and other forest products. The boundary with Brazil is mostly mountainous; its rain forests are home to thousands of indigenous inhabitants. The Orinoco, one of the great rivers of South America, has its source in this region.

web hosting domain names email addresses A Lesson in Historical Geography I'm not much of a map drawer, but I think it would be helpful to share some maps, even simplified ones, with some of the younger students who are beginning to study Bolívar and Latin American history for the first time. The maps contained on this page are rudimentary! But hopefully they'll be useful to some of you out there on the WWW. Let's begin with the basics. Here's a map of modern Latin America. Simón Bolívar is from Venezuela.
Ok, let's look at Latin America when Simón Bolívar was alive. It looked quite different, as you will see. Edwin Williamson, in his book The Penguin History of Latin America When Bolívar died in 1830, he had liberated the territories which comprise present day Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. However, back then, Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador were not known as such, but formed one country called Greater Colombia, "Gran Colombia."
After Bolívar's death, Gran Colombia broke apart.

A Guide to the Birds of Colombia
Steven L. Hilty, William L. Brown
836 pages - Paperback If you are going to South America to see birds, you really need to take this book with you. Describing all of Colombia's birds, Steven L. Hilty and William L. Brown bring together information on one of the world's largest avifaunas nearly 1,700 species. Over half of all the species of birds in South America are included, thus making the book useful in regions adjacent to Colombia as well as in the country itself. The primary purpose of the work is to enable observers to identify the birds of the region, but it also provides detailed species accounts and will serve as an important handbook and reference volume. Fifty-six lavish color plates, thirteen halftone plates, and one hundred line drawings in the text illustrate over 85% of the species, including most of the resident birds. Notes on the page facing each plate, and range maps of 1,475 species, facilitate identification.
Written with the field observer in mind, the text gives special attention to comparisons of similar species, transcriptions of voices, and comments on behavior, status, and habitat. It also provides ranges, breeding data, and references. Notes outline taxonomic problems and briefly describe species that eventually may be found in Colombia. Introductory chapters and photographs highlight Colombia's geography, climate, and vegetation, and discuss migration and conservation questions, and the history of Colombian ornithology. Appendices contain a large bibliography, a section on birding locations, and coverage of two of Colombia's far-flung island territories, Isla San Andres and Providencia. Maps depicting vegetation zones, political boundaries, national parks, and most text localities are included.

Geography of Venezuela
Venezuela can be divided into four distinct geographic regions. In the west, the Venezuelan Highlands include the Andean mountain range to the coast. Though representing only 12% of Venezuela's land area, this region contains 66% of Venezuela's population and most of its major cities. Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela and one of the wealthiest and most modern capitals in South America, lies in this region. The next major geographical region of Venezuela, the Maracaibo lowlands, lies in the northwest of the country. The area contains Lake Maracaibo, the largest lake in South America. This shallow freshwater lake is 75 miles long and 100 miles wide. The city of Maracaibo, with a population of more than one million, is the second largest city in Venezuela. It is reached via the five-mile long General Raphael Urdaneta Bridge, the longest prestressed concrete bridge in the world. The third region in Venezuela is the plains, or

B C D ... South America Venezuela Introduction:
Venezuela was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Ecuador). For most of the first half of the 20th century, Venezuela was ruled by generally benevolent military strongmen, who promoted the oil industry and allowed for some social reforms. Democratically elected governments have held sway since 1959. Current concerns include: an embattled president who is losing his once solid support among Venezuelans, a divided military, drug-related conflicts along the Colombian border, increasing internal drug consumption, overdependence on the petroleum industry with its price fluctuations, and irresponsible mining operations that are endangering the rain forest and indigenous peoples.
Official name: Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Capital: Caracas Government type: federal republic Population: 24,654,694 (July 2003 est.) Languages: Spanish (official), numerous indigenous dialects
