Geography Venezuela is located between 1 –12 degrees longitude (N) and 60 – 73 degrees latitude (W), and is therefore entirely in the tropics. Occupying the far north eastern part of South America, it is bordered by Brazil to the south, Columbia to the west and Guyana to the southeast. Its coastline meets the waters of both the Caribbean sea in the north and the Atlantic Ocean in the east. Covering an area of 912,050 km² (566,383 miles²), Venezuela extends up to 1,290 km (801 miles) east to west and 1,050 km (652 miles) north to south. Elevations range from sea level to 2,500 m (8,200 ft) in the Guiana Highlands and up to 5,007 m (16,427 ft) in the Andes mountains. Venezuela has an incredibly diverse landscape encompassing 10 broad geographical regions. Off the north coast lie numerous Caribbean Islands, of which the biggest is Isla Margarita. The Andes in the west continue in the north with the Cordillera de la Costa, a mountain chain which runs along the Caribbean coast. The Andes also continue south to Los Llanos, a giant plain extending east as far as the Caura River, which flows through Venezuela's second largest forest reserve after Amazonas and only recently became known to adventure tourism. Located south of Los Llanos is the Amazon Basin, the largest rain forest in the world. East of the Caura River forest is the beginning of the Gran Sabana, part of the Guayana Highlands which extend up to the rainforests of the Orinoco Delta in the north east and the Brazilian border in the south.

Geography
Located at the northernmost end of South America, Venezuela has a total area of 912,050 square kilometers and a land area of 882,050 square kilometers, about twice the size of California. Shaped roughly like an inverted triangle, the country has a 2,800-kilometer coastline and is bounded on the north by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, on the east by Guyana, on the south by Brazil, and on the west by Colombia.
Topography
Most observers describe Venezuela in terms of four fairly well-defined regions: the Maracaibo lowlands in the northwest, the northern mountains extending in a broad east-west arc from the Colombian border along the Caribbean Sea, the wide Orinoco plains ( llanos) in central Venezuela, and the highly dissected Guiana highlands in the southeast. The Maracaibo lowlands form a large spoon-shaped oval bounded by mountains on three sides and open to the Caribbean on the north. The area is remarkably flat with only a gentle slope toward the center and away from the mountains that border the region. Lago de Maracaibo occupies much of the lower-lying territory. Areas around the southern part of Lago de Maracaibo are swampy, and, despite the rich agricultural land and significant petroleum deposits, the area was still thinly populated in 1990. The mountains bordering the Caribbean Sea are actually the northeasternmost extension of the Andes chain. Broken by several gaps, these high mountains have peaks over 4,500 meters; the fertile valleys between the ranges contain most of Venezuela's population, industry, and agriculture. The discontinuous westernmost range runs along the Colombian border and is the least densely populated part of this region. The ranges southeast of Lago de Maracaibo contain some of the highest peaks in the country (Pico Bolívar reaches 5,007 meters), a few of which are snowcapped year-round.

GEOGRAPHY
Español English Français Deutsch Portugues Italiano In geography, there are two ways of dividing a territory. The first one is a physical division, where regions with similar characteristics, from a point of view of topography, vegetation and climate, are grouped together. The second way, the political division, where the territory is divided in states with a common administration (governors, local congress...).
PHYSICAL DIVISION
Here again, there are two ways of dividing the country. The easiest one, divides Venezuela in 3 big regions: 1) Andes-Coast
2) "Llanos" (Prairies)
3) Guayana However, it is our opinion, that this way of grouping is putting together places that are very different, for instance Maracaibo and Merida). That is why we like much more the division proposed in the book "Image of Venezuela: An space vision", published by Petroleos de Venezuela and the "Instituto de Ingenieria". This division is based in the study of satellite images. The territory is divided in the following nine regions: - Cordillera Central (Central chain)
- Cordillera Oriental (East Chain)
- Sistema Coriano (Coro system)
- Lago de Maracaibo (Lake of Maracaibo) - The Andes
- The Llanos (Prairies)
- Sistema Deltáico (Orinoco delta)
- Sur del Orinoco (South of Orinoco)
- Las Islas (The Islands)

Pictures and text introduce the geography, history, culture, food, and businesses that make up the unique nation that's home to the world's highest waterfall.
http://www.interknowledge.com/venezuela/index.htm
VENEZUELA
Introduction T
he Republic of Venezuela is the sixth largest country in South America, but in variation its landscape rivals that of the much larger countries like Brazil and Argentina. In fact, comparing its geography really doesn't do it justice: the country is simply unique. Anyone who has ever seen a tepuis rising above Venezuela's Gran Sabana can testify that there's nothing really like it, anywhere.
Venezuela lies at the northern extreme of South America, bordered by Colombia to the West, Brazil to the South, Guyana to the East, and the Caribbean Sea to the North. In all, the country is just over 900,000 square kilometers and divided into 23 states. Its borders seem to hold all of South America in miniature: there are fine stretches of the Andes, huge areas of Amazonian rain forests, fertile plains known as llanos, miles of Caribbean shoreline, and even a small desert. The nation also has a few geographical superlatives, including the world's highest waterfall and South America's biggest lake.
Venezuela is as much a Caribbean country as it is a South American one. Parts of its shoreline could easily be mistaken for that of some paradisiacal Caribbean island, and at night the discos in Caracas come alive with rhythms from all over the Caribbean. If you looked under the earth, you might easily mistake Venezuela for an oil-rich Arabian country. The oil reserves are so vast, in fact, that from time to time engineers and surveyors drill in the wrong place by mistake, miles away from where they think they should be, only to end up finding oil anyway.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Venezuela was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Ecuador). For most of the first half of the 20th century, Venezuela was ruled by generally benevolent military strongmen, who promoted the oil industry and allowed for some social reforms. Democratically elected governments have held sway since 1959. Current concerns include: drug-related conflicts along the Colombian border, increasing internal drug consumption, overdependence on the petroleum industry with its price fluctuations, and irresponsible mining operations which are endangering the rain forest and indigenous peoples.
