Inside Vatican City
Article # : Section : CULTURE Issue Date : 1,255 Words Author : Nancy Lee Fernas
Gazing upward through the bright rays of sunlight streaming in through the centuries-old stained glass windows set high in the magnificently adorned ceilings of St. Peter's Basilica, the viewer feels an unspeakable awe at the sheer genius of the structure -the largest church in the World- Consecrated in 1626 after more than a century of planning and building.
The basilica, joined by the Piazza of St. Peter, lies near the center of Vatican City, the religious and administrative heart of the Roman Catholic Church. With 800 million followers, it is the largest single organized group of Christians in the world.
A holy site from the early days of Christianity and home to the popes since the fourteenth century, the modern state of Vatican City has existed by treaty with Italy only since 1929 when the Lateran Treaty between Mussolini's Italian government and the Holy See resolved a long dispute by recognizing the Vatican's sovereignty and establishing its borders.

Pros
The sights, the history, the people
Cons People have sticky fingers Full Review I have had the opportunity to visit many places, both on business and liesure. I can say with certainty that Rome is by far the most impressive place I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. My visit centered around the Vatican, since my good friend was studying the priesthood there at the time. He took us around for a tour for about four hours. I can honestly say that I don't remember much of what he said. The sights are awesome. When visiting St. Peters I stopped in my tracks. As soon as I walked through the door, my heart stopped. I could have never prepared for the shear emmensity of the Basilica. On that pretty much sums up my visit. Everywhere we went was just so fantastic to behold, words of explanation seems to be dull noise in the background. Perhaps that is why I enjoyed Rome and the Vatican so much. The sights go beyond the language. They transcend the people, culture and the business of everyday life going around you. By the way, the people are just great and I really enjoy the culture.

Richard Corliss loves Las Vegas for the strangest reasons Saturday, Nov. 08, 2003
My wife, the famous Mary Corliss, enjoys gambling. She will rarely go out of her way to visit a casino, but if we’re traveling, and one is near, she’ll play the slots for a few hours. For me, that’s not entertainment; I sit before a machine and feel I’m on an assembly line. Stop the whirl, I don’t want to go broke. We’ve been to Atlantic City, which is two-and-a-half hours south from our Manhattan home, and to the Indian-reservation casinos Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, two-and-a-half hours northeast of New York. We vacation on the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten, which has a casino across the street from our time-share. Every two years we take a cruise, called the Floating Film Festival, on a ship with a casino. And by designating myself the official Cirque du Soleil correspondent of TIME Magazine and TIME.com, I’ve gotten us to Las Vegas every year or so for the past decade. The other casino stops are wayside chapels of the gambling culture. Las Vegas is Vatican City. In his indispensible history
