Vatican City State
The capital of the Catholic church Take me to the pictures! (one photo in photo gallery) The Vatican City State was created in 1929 as a consequence of the Lateran Pact between the Italian Kingdom and the Catholic church, laying to rest a long standing conflict between the two. The Catholic church had had its own state since the early Middle Ages, the Papal state, which included most of the central parts on the Italian peninsula. This came to an end with the conquest and later annexation of the Papal state to the nascent Italian Kingdom in 1860. Only the city of Rome remained under the rule of the Pope, protected by a garrison of French troops. The young Italian Kingdom was not in a state to challenge France, so Rome was temporarily out of reach for the Italian Kingdom. The French-German war of 1870 caused the French to withdraw the garrison from Rome , and immediately afterwards the Italian army attacked and took the city, leaving the Pope as a self-declared "prisoner in the Vatican". The Pope refused to recognise the Italian Kingdom and forbade all catholics to participate in Italian politics, both as voters and as candidates, which had the unwanted effect of blocking the formation of a catholic party and hence reduced catholic influence in Italian politics. The conflict is usually referred to as the Roman Question This state of affairs persisted for 59 years, until the ratification of the Lateran Pact in 1929. With the Lateran Pact the dispute between the two parties were settled. As a part of the settlement, the Vatican City State was created as an independent and sovereign state. The Italian State also recognised Catholicism as its state religion, allowed the teaching of religion in public schools and agreed to support the church financially. The Holy See, on the other hand, formally recognised the sovereignty of

If your curiosity isn't piqued, even a little, to go romp around the ruins, and if the high point of centuries of art just leaves you blank, head cocked to one side saying, "Huh? I don't get it," well, at least you can tell them back home that you tried. That use of space! Those 20-ton doors!) Simply put, it is beautiful, perfect, and peaceful. If you can, go when it's raining but kind of bright; it's especially great when the rain pours in through the hole in the dome onto the stone floor. No, really, this is a cool, random place to visitI mean women actually cloister themselves here, renouncing the pleasures of the flesh and all. Page five of eleven The Vatican is the smallest sovereign state in the world, measuring only about 109 acres (44 hectares). It is ringed with centuries-old walls and entirely surrounded by the city of Rome. But it is a separate nation, formed in 1929 in a treaty with the Italian government.
This independence is the Vatican's most important secular feature because it protects the pope from outside interference. Dominated by St. Peter's Basilica and its embracing colonnade, Vatican city covers 108.7 acres on a site known to ancient Romans as Mons Vaticanus. Popes lost political power over Rome and the surrounding papal states with the unification of Italy (1861-70) but remained in residence as self-styled "prisoners of the Vatican." Mussolini's government recognized Vatican City as an independent state in the 1929 Lateran Treaty.

We worked with the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, to develop a state-of-the-art web site and Digital Library solution. This was a joint development project which included contributions from the State Hermitage Museum and many IBM locations, including Armonk, NY; IBM Research, Haifa, Israel; IBM Naples, Italy; IBM Russia, Moscow and St. Petersburg; IBM Software Solutions, Santa Teresa, CA; and IBM Research, Hawthorne and Yorktown, NY. The goal of this project was to capture images from the Hermitage collection for use with in-museum kiosks, for educational purposes, and over the web. The Hermitage web site shows one of the results of this partnership. This work was awarded Imaging Solution of 1999 in the category "Digital Photography and Still Image Databasing" by Advanced Imaging Magazine . An IBM press release describes the project in more detail.

VATICAN CITY STATE!!
Translate into: Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese Pius IX (1846 - 1878). In 1870 Pope Pius IX was the most HATED man in Italy. In July 1870, he was declared infallible by Vatican Council I, and in September war broke out between France and Prussia. The French troops upholding the last remnants of the Pope's temporal power had to be withdrawn to oppose the invading Prussian soldiers. The Italians rushed into Rome and proclaimed the United Kingdom of Italy with Victor Emmanuel as king. Professor Gavazzi led the conquering host into the city. He invited the Pope to step down from his lordly throne and join the true church of Rome - the Evangelical Free Church - founded by St. Paul in 60 A.D Some of his close advisers urged him to flee to England and join his friend Lord John Russell there. However, his Jesuits controllers ordered him to stay in Rome as they had one last card to play: the AMERICAN CARD!!
