    People and geography
by Guidez.net (source: US Department of State)
Vanuatu is a 'Y' shaped archipelago that comprises 80 islands. It is located 2,172 kilometers (1,303 mi.) northeast of Sydney and 5,750 kilometers (3,450 mi.) southwest of Honolulu. Fiji lies to the east, New Caledonia to the south, and the Solomon Islands to the northwest, all within the area of the South Pacific called Melanesia.
The two largest islands, Espiritu Santo (or Santo) and Malakula, account for nearly one-half of the total land area. They are volcanic, with sharp mountain peaks, plateaus, and lowlands. The last volcanic eruption was in 1945. The larger islands of the remaining half also are volcanic but are overlaid with limestone formations; the smaller ones are coral and limestone. Rainfall averages about 2,360 millimeters (94 in.) per year but can be as high as 4,000 millimeters (160 in.) in the northern islands.
The population of Vanuatu is 94% indigenous Melanesian. About 30,000 live in the capital, Port Vila. Another 9,600 live in Luganville (or Santo Town) on Espiritu Santo. The remainder live in rural areas. Approximately 2,000 ni-Vanuatu live and work in New Caledonia. Although local pidgin, called Bislama, is the national language, English and French also are official languages. Indigenous Melanesians speak 105 local languages.

The British and French who settled the New Hebrides in the 19th century, agreed in 1906 to an Anglo-French Condominium, which administered the islands until independence in 1980.
Location: Oceania, group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean, about three-quarters of the way from Hawaii to Australia
Climate: tropical; moderated by southeast trade winds
Terrain: mostly mountains of volcanic origin; narrow coastal plains Natural resources: manganese, hardwood forests, fish Natural hazards: tropical cyclones or typhoons (January to April); volcanism causes minor earthquakes The economy is based primarily on subsistence or small-scale agriculture which provides a living for 65% of the population. Fishing, offshore financial services, and tourism, with about 50,000 visitors in 1997, are other mainstays of the economy. Mineral deposits are negligible; the country has no known petroleum deposits. A small light industry sector caters to the local market. Tax revenues come mainly from import duties. Economic development is hindered by dependence on relatively few commodity exports, vulnerability to natural disasters, and long distances from main markets and between constituent islands. The most recent natural disaster, a severe earthquake in November 1999 followed by a tsunami, caused extensive damage to the northern island of Pentecote and left thousands homeless.

    Introduction
Vanuatu is a country in the southwest Pacific Ocean that is made up of more than 80 separate islands. Some of the islands include Espiritu Santo, Malekula, Efate, Erromango, and Tanna. The islands are now an independent country, but they used to be called the New Hebrides islands and were under the rule of Great Britain and France. There are several active volcanoes in the Vanuatu islands.

    GAMBLING
The biggest gambling in Vanuatu is online with some major players basing their organisations in Port Vila because of the low tax system. For offline gambling there are poker (slot) machines at Club 21 (above the Sunset Bar at the Melanesian), Club Vanuatu (upstairs and downstairs) and upstairs at Palms Casino (Le Meridien). Downstairs at Palms are roulette, blackjack and other tables. Top
    GAME FISHING
There are game fishing charter boats for hire – head to the Waterfront Bar and Grill and ask Don or Donna (the owners). You would be very unlucky to return without a catch and could be lucky enough to find marlin and fighting tuna. The boat ‘owns’ the catch, but the Waterfront will cook it for you that evening. The guys from Get Wet on Erakor (and soon from Chantillys) are experienced and pretty much guarantee a catch – depending on how many are caught, you may be able to take your fish with you - handy if your accommodation has barbecues. For the ultimate fishing trip you can charter Jackpot for the week and travel the islands in style. Jackpot is a fully equipped dive and fishing boat that sleeps eight. Another newcomer on the scene and very professional too is The Kahuna, part of South Pacific Anglers. The Kahuna is a 43ft Sports Ocean Cruiser game fishing boat outfitted with the finest electronics and game fishing equipment available. If you’re a serious fisherman

    SOUTH PACIFIC ISLANDS NELLES GUIDE
To order this book directly from Hunter Publishing One of the most heart stopping, awe inspiring experiences is on Tanna Island and a tour to Mt Yasur, the volcano. You can actually hike to the very rim of the volcano. Peering over the rim of the crater, there are several pools of molten lava. Then the ground rumbles. And you feel it through every part of your being. Smoke builds in the crater, the rumble tuns into a roar and then the eruption. Red fire spews hundreds of feet into the sky, illuminated against the black of night. You jump back, sure the lava will land where you stand, only to creep forward and peer over the rim once again. Port Vila is the international gateway for Vanuatu and is the more developed of the islands. There is a wide range of accommodation from the overwater bungalows at the Meridien, to the convenient Kaiviti Village Motel, to the offshore resorts of Iriki Island, or Hideaway. There are great restaurants, nightlife, shopping and activities such as sailing or snorkeling cruises and even golf. Diving, of course, is another attraction of the country. There are dive operations associated with most of the island resorts, as well as an in town operator that is a full service PADI facility. For more serious divers, however, a visit to the island of Santo is recommended. Any serious wreck divers will want to spend several dives on the President Coolidge. The ship is easily accessible and offers many different dive profiles due to its sheer immensity. Be sure to include a dive to see The Lady, located in one of the main
