Where on Earth is
Vanuatu
Vanuatu is a volcanic island chain in the south west Pacific Ocean, between Fiji and New Caledonia. There are about 80 islands with a total land area of 12,189 square kilometers reaching 900 km in a north-south direction. The capital of Vanuatu is Port Vila, on the island of Efate. As you can see from the space photograph of Efate, most of the islands are lush green tropical forest. Except for two urban areas, Port Vila and Luganville on Santo, the small population of people lives in rural villages. What's special about Vanuatu? "I believe Vanuatu is one of the few places on Earth where you can enter into a very ancient culture and contact your deepest roots and connections with the natural world and feel safe and comfortable at the same time." Edward Nipake Natapei Prime Minister of Vanuatu Security, peace, a sense of wonder at the scenic splendor of nature, garnished with a culture that goes back thousands of years. These are some of the reasons people come from Europe, Asia, the United States, Australia and New Zealand to visit or live in Vanuatu. The people of Vanuatu are Melanesians and have a very strong and enduring attachment to their islands and their environment. In the more remote islands the people still follow their ancestrial traditions and their artwork, dances, music, and dress will transport you to an era before the concept of time began.

SOUTH PACIFIC ISLANDS NELLES GUIDE
To order this book directly from Hunter Publishing One of the most heart stopping, awe inspiring experiences is on Tanna Island and a tour to Mt Yasur, the volcano. You can actually hike to the very rim of the volcano. Peering over the rim of the crater, there are several pools of molten lava. Then the ground rumbles. And you feel it through every part of your being. Smoke builds in the crater, the rumble tuns into a roar and then the eruption. Red fire spews hundreds of feet into the sky, illuminated against the black of night. You jump back, sure the lava will land where you stand, only to creep forward and peer over the rim once again. Port Vila is the international gateway for Vanuatu and is the more developed of the islands. There is a wide range of accommodation from the overwater bungalows at the Meridien, to the convenient Kaiviti Village Motel, to the offshore resorts of Iriki Island, or Hideaway. There are great restaurants, nightlife, shopping and activities such as sailing or snorkeling cruises and even golf. Diving, of course, is another attraction of the country. There are dive operations associated with most of the island resorts, as well as an in town operator that is a full service PADI facility. For more serious divers, however, a visit to the island of Santo is recommended. Any serious wreck divers will want to spend several dives on the President Coolidge. The ship is easily accessible and offers many different dive profiles due to its sheer immensity. Be sure to include a dive to see The Lady, located in one of the main

Basket weaving is a traditional craft and art of Vanuatu. There is a great wealth of basket styles still made today and widely used throughout the islands. Coconut leaf is the most commonly used material for baskets. In the north of Vanuatu, other materials such split bamboo, pandanus leaf, wild cane and certain vines can also be used. In the capital, Port Vila, it is common for women to use baskets as handbags or shoulder bags. Women working at the markets can use baskets to store their change There are many ways to use baskets: in certain northern islands like Pentecost, school children may use a small style of basket to carry their school wrapped root crop lunch. Further north, in the Banks Group, 'basket traps' can be used to catch freshwater prawns or fish. In the southern island of Tanna, women may use a large type of basket to carry fruit and vegetables home from the markets. Throughout Vanuatu, sturdy baskets can be used to store fruit and vegetables. Finer baskets can be hung from posts or nails to store items as varied as live chickens, food, bibles, sewing supplies, or dried pandanus materials to use in basket weaving. Men's personal baskets can contain tobacco, matches, knives, etc. Certain baskets can be used in special ritual contexts such as bank baskets containing money mats used during traditional marriage payments.

The island of Malakula in northern Vanuatu is renowned for its complex megalithic cultures and ritual 'art' forms associated with initiation, grading and status rituals, certain types of 'hidden' societies and elaborate funerary rites. The above quote, in Ninde language from the Mewun area of Malakula's South-west Bay, was given to Kirk Huffman by Chief Sarawo'h Bahap of Nemel Loh'toh and Mun. It encapsulates the essence of the kind of work that Huffman has been doing in Vanuatu over a period of nearly 30 years and links with his time at the Australian Museum as Visiting Leo Fleischmann Fellow and Visiting Collections Fellow in Anthropology since July 2000. Malakula is Vanuatu's second largest island - it is 2069 square kilometres in area with a population of 23,700 people that speak 35 different languages and an as yet unknown number of sub-dialects. In most museum collections from Vanuatu, approximately half of the material originates from Malakula. Most overseas academics and museum curators looking at these early collections tend to assume that traditional cultural and ritual activities on the island have almost ceased and are a thing of the past. But this is not the case. Although the last major group of traditionalists in the southern interior mountains converted to Christianity in 1989, much of southern Malakula remains the centre of a superbly complex spiritual world attuned to respect for ancestral and other spirits. The material and spirit worlds continue to be connected through sacrifice, ritual, song, dance and the production of innumerable 'art' forms.

Kastom Vanuatu
"Kastom" is a Bislama word derived from the English word "custom", but its meaning encompasses all things customary, traditional, and related to magic and sorcery Vanuatu kastom is not something I know a lot about; much of it is secret and passed down from the initiated to the deserving over generations . Quite a bit has been lost due to the efforts of Western missionaries and other post-contact cultural chaos, including extermination by Western diseases, general demoralization, and ni-Vanuatu attempts to emulate kastom blong waetman. The latter involves imitating Westerners in an attempt to gain a fair (i.e., equal) share of our material wealth. These efforts include the well-known cargo cults but also, by my observation, the foreign aid system, Christianity, Westminister-style government, education, and other trappings of the West. In general, when I lived on Malekula Island I accorded kastom the respect which I felt it deserved and made little effort to break tabu by nosing into another culture's business. After I kept my mouth shut and didn't passing judgement on what I was told, eventually my co-workers and others did share a little and give me a small peek into their kastom world . Sometimes, they would test me and ask me questions such as did I really believed that men changed themselves into sharks. My reply was always along the lines of how I was a whiteman and

Three ni-Vanuatu Men Remember Their World War II Service With The American Military Forces
References to the effects of the American occupation of Vanuatu during WW II are often made by Westerners writing about Vanuatu, but first-hand ni-Vanuatu accounts of that time are rarely found . One of my email correspondents asked me to translate these interviews from Bislama to aid his research into events that occurred on Espiritu Santo Island during the War. I found them so fascinating that I asked where they had come from, and learned that they were part of 120-odd interviews conducted in 1988 as part of a project carried out by James Gwero of the Vanuatu Cultural Centre and Lamont Lindstrom of the University of Tulsa (Oklahoma, USA), who has given me permission to post my translations of these three interviews here. Lamont Lindstrom and James Gwero are just (early 1998) finishing a book in which excerpts of these interviews have been organized by topic and accompanied by a large number of photos. Judging by the Table of Contents and sample chapters that I have seen, "BIG WOK - Storian blong Wol Wo Tu long Vanuatu" is going to be a great read (in Bislama) for those who are interested in the Melanesian viewpoint of that episode in history.
