Islands of Corals, Ashes and Arts
By JET BAKELS The Republic of Vanuatu consists of eighty small volcanic islands (with two active volcanoes), stretching for 900 kilometres, in the Pacific, southeast of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Vanuatu forms, with PNG, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji the Melanesian part of Oceania. Like PNG, Vanuatu is home to a large number of tribal groups. Four thousand years ago Austronesian migrations spread from PNG and New Britain into the Pacific, reaching Vanuatu around 1200 BC. More than a hundred languages are spoken by a population of approximately 150,000, showing one of the highest linguistic densities of the world with a ratio of one language per 1500 persons. Today Bislama , the Pidgin trade language, is the only one of the three official languages (with French and English) that everyone speaks and understands. In 1606 a Spanish expedition reached Vanuatu, followed more than a century later by expeditions led by De Bougainville (in 1768) and Cook (in 1774). Both the French and the English retained a claim on the islands, leading to a joint government, a condominium (mockingly called pandemonium), until Vanuatu's independence in 1980. The early explorers did not have a very high opinion of the inhabitants of these dark islands, whose presumed savagery and primitiveness seemed to contrast so strongly with the lightness and elegance of the Polynesian islands further east. The same holds true for the missionaries who came in the 19th century: one of them described the women, elaborately decorated with colourful leaves and grasses, as 'moving shrubs'.

PACIFIC SKY
The Pacific Sky is the cruise ship that visits Vila and some outer islands from time to time. Some locals refer to it as the ‘cattle freighter’ because of the number of extra people it dumps in town for the day. You’ll know if one’s in because the markets will be busier, people will be carrying duty free bags up the street and the Mamu Bar will be raging. Bar staff often hand out water pistols to keep the customers cool so it’s best to cross the street if you don’t want to get wet when passing. Another sign the ship’s in is the increase of motor scooters buzzing about with riders sporting a nice sunburn and without helmets or shirts. If you plan to join them, please remember which side of the road vehicles drive on! Top

Pigs have always been important in vanuatu culture, and the clubbingof a pig is an expected and cherished part of any big celebration.

Home Mission Connections Mission Workers Bruce and Lora Whearty A letter from Bruce and Lora Whearty in Vanuatu 16 September, 2002 Letter 3 Hi! Let's see if we can catch up on some stories. In keeping with its policy of using the General Assembly as part of rural development, the church installed a new water supply for the village and made the first donation to kick off the funding for a new village church. One of the high points of the assembly for us was our presentation of a communion chalice to the moderator of the assembly. It was one of the earthenware cups used at our commissioning service in Columbus, Ohio, last June, and it was used to serve wine at the closing communion service on Makira. Bruce had carried that cup somewhere close to 10,000 miles to bring it here as a token of the connectedness of our churches, and it was fun to finally hand it over to its new owners, who will use it at future assemblies. Kinsey's six weeks in an arm cast were completed on Makira, and the local health worker had quite a time confronting an American cast. He tried to cut it with scissors, he tried to unwind it, and he tried to soak it like you would with a normal plaster cast. No luck. Michael, one of the maintenance workers here at Onesua, found a hack saw blade, told Kinsey to scream if he cut her, and proceeded to cut off the cast. We laughed about using appropriate technology. Kinsey's thumb was stiff and sore for a few days, but is now fully recovered.

    Culture
The ni-Vanuatu pride themselves on their musical instruments, of which the tamtam - also called the slit-drum or slit-gong - is a fine example. Traditionally used in ceremonies, it is an intricately carved log with a slice hollowed out from the centre from which the sound reverberates. Panpipes are also common in music, as are conch shells, which double as bush telephones. On Santo they play a three-holed flute, while on Ambrym a long, carved musical pipe is played. Ambrym is also home to the most elaborate sand drawings in Vanuatu, which villagers employ to illustrate legends, songs, ceremonies or to leave messages. Stone, wood and even treefern carving has developed into an intricate art form owing to the abundance of available materials, and in the north the sculptors sometimes use coral to carve small statues. Magic stones carved from pumice are part of Vanuatu's hidden life and are generally not on display. Tattooing was once a high art form but is becoming rarer, although body and rock painting are still widely practiced. Vanuatu's fractured terrain has produced a kaleidoscope of cultures and more than 100 indigenous languages. Isolated from each other by sea or impassable mountains, disparate groups of islanders had hundreds or thousands of years to jealously guard their own cultures and languages or to throw them in the mix with their neighbours.

CULTURE AND ARTIFACTS CUSTOM FEAST There are two mini feasts each week where you can experience the traditional dishes and dances in a village atmosphere. You get to sample the local staple diet such as laplap or taro, manioc, banana, kumala, with chicken, pork or fish, as well as watching some of the many traditional dances or even dance to the sounds of the local string band. All these happening at Ekasup Cultural Village and at Solo's Feat next to Mele village. The major hotels also have island nights each week. Top BEACHES Undoubtedly the most popular and idyllic beach for tourists is Eton beach situated on the east coast of the island, just north of the village of Eton, approximately 43 km's from Port Vila. The beach here is on the edge of freshwater creek where the rocks and coral form a superb safe swimming location with expansive white sandy coves. Further north is a good beach at Taraka and a very picturesque beach at Undine Bay with a view of several smaller islands. Closer to Port Vila are Erakor Island (very safe for small children), the Public Beach opposite Whitesands Country Club and the black sand beach at Mele Bay opposite Hideaway Island.

It has all the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster - a smouldering volcano, a jungle battle, a bizarre cult and a self-styled messiah called Prophet Fred. But the feud which has broken out between two villages in the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu is all too real for the dozens of men in hospital with axe and spear wounds.
