Culture
The ni-Vanuatu pride themselves on their musical instruments, of which the tamtam - also called the slit-drum or slit-gong - is a fine example. Traditionally used in ceremonies, it is an intricately carved log with a slice hollowed out from the centre from which the sound reverberates. Panpipes are also common in music, as are conch shells, which double as bush telephones. On Santo they play a three-holed flute, while on Ambrym a long, carved musical pipe is played. Ambrym is also home to the most elaborate sand drawings in Vanuatu, which villagers employ to illustrate legends, songs, ceremonies or to leave messages. Stone, wood and even treefern carving has developed into an intricate art form owing to the abundance of available materials, and in the north the sculptors sometimes use coral to carve small statues. Magic stones carved from pumice are part of Vanuatu's hidden life and are generally not on display. Tattooing was once a high art form but is becoming rarer, although body and rock painting are still widely practiced. Vanuatu's fractured terrain has produced a kaleidoscope of cultures and more than 100 indigenous languages. Isolated from each other by sea or impassable mountains, disparate groups of islanders had hundreds or thousands of years to jealously guard their own cultures and languages or to throw them in the mix with their neighbours. The indigenous population is an assemblage of Melanesian - the black people of the Western Pacific with links to Papuans and Australian Aborigines - Polynesian, the lighter skinned people of the eastern Pacific, and varying degrees in between. While Bislama is a linguistically unifying factor, English, and more commonly, French are also spoken.

Culture With a population of 186,678 (from the Statistics Bureau 1999), Vanuatu boasts 113 distinct languages and innumerable dialects. This makes it one of the most culturally diverse countries on earth. This amazing diversity is a result of 3,000 years of sporadic immigration from many Pacific countries. Although most settlers arrive from Melanesia, the larger built, lighter skinned Polynesians also settled in the islands. As with all nations and peoples, over millennia these different groups came into both peaceful and violent contact, sometimes intermarrying and sometimes having losing their cultural identity to a more dominant group. Each successive wave of immigrants carried with them all the tools needed to live. Food crops, tree seedlings and their most important animal - the pig. This animal is probably the most significant aspect of life in Vanuatu, for it symbolises not simply a source of protein, it is the cornerstone of their ritual life, a token of wealth and power upon which entire societies are founded. Over the millennia, natural boundaries; large open stretches of water, dense jungle and mountainous terrain, isolated many groups, even from the same ethnic origins, from each other. And isolation bred not just warfare, but quite different, sophisticated societies and political systems.

Traditional life in Vanuatu was characterised by a constant and ongoing cycle of ritual events. Every stage of an individual's life was celebrated, and the occasions of birth, initiation, the achievement of positions of status, marriage and death are still major events in a community's social life today. Festivities to celebrate the annual yam harvest (around July and August) have always been significant. Creative and artistic expression was most concentrated as part of the ritual cycle, and the items made to be used in these ceremonies remain some of the most visually impressive pieces of Vanuatu's artistic heritage.Songs, dances and other forms of expressive performance were also integral to the cycle of life and its accompanying ritual observances. Pigs are a measure of wealth throughout most of the islands and are a part of many ceremonies. The most prized pig is the male with curled tusks. The upper canines are removed allowing the tusk to grow into a curl, a process taking up to 14 years. Pigs are used to pay for grade taking rights, penalty payment for breaking tabu, for trade and as gifts for marriage, death, circumcisions, initiations, etc. Ultimately the pigs are ritually killed by high ranking men and the curled tusk is worn by these men as a status symbol. Ni-Vanuatu people can trace their lineage back for countless generations and indeed, chiefs can be considered as noblemen. Meeting traditional chiefs is a special opportunity to experience a unique form of wisdom, honour and kindness. Listening to the stories shared around a shell of kava during a quiet evening under the palm fronds will fill you with an indescribable peacefulness.

A background of Vanuatu, its people and its culture.
ABOUT VANUATU - POPULATION
The population of Vanuatu is about 190,000; with 94% (the Ni-Vanuatu) being indigenous Melanesian. The remaining 6% comprises Europeans, Vietnamese, Chinese and other Pacific Islanders.
As a result of Vanuatu's dual Colonial past, English and French are the official languages, along with bislama , a pidgin language, based on English, that is understood by almost everyone. There are also over 115 different dialects spoken within the islands.
Only 61% of children reach class five level at primary school and only 20% go on to high school. This is due to the high cost of education in this country and also to the fact that children in remote, rural areas do not have easy access to schools.
RELIGION
Like many Pacific Island nations, Vanuatu's missionary past has resulted in a mostly Christian population. The main denominations are Anglican, Catholic and Presbyterian. There is, however, a small percentage (around 8%) who still follow indigenous beliefs, based on animist principles.
