Inaugural Address
ATURDAY, MARCH 4, 1837 The ailing President Jackson and his Vice President Van Buren rode together to the Capitol from the White House in a carriage made of timbers from the U.S.S. Constitution. Chief Justice Roger Taney administered the oath of office on the East Portico of the Capitol. For the first and only time, the election for Vice President had been decided by the Senate, as provided by the Constitution, when the electoral college could not select a winner. The new Vice President, Richard M. Johnson, took his oath in the Senate Chamber.
So sensibly, fellow-citizens, do these circumstances press themselves upon me that I should not dare to enter upon my path of duty did I not look for the generous aid of those who will be associated with me in the various and coordinate branches of the Government; did I not repose with unwavering reliance on the patriotism, the intelligence, and the kindness of a people who never yet deserted a public servant honestly laboring their cause; and, above all, did I not permit myself humbly to hope for the sustaining support of an ever-watchful and beneficent Providence. To the confidence and consolation derived from these sources it would be ungrateful not to add those which spring from our present fortunate condition. Though not altogether exempt from embarrassments that disturb our tranquillity at home and threaten it abroad, yet in all the attributes of a great, happy, and flourishing people we stand without a parallel in the world. Abroad we enjoy the respect and, with scarcely an exception, the friendship of every nation; at home, while our Government quietly but efficiently performs the sole legitimate end of political institutionsin doing the greatest good to the greatest number we present an aggregate of human prosperity surely not elsewhere to be found.

Martin Van Buren National Historic Site, in Kinderhook, New York, is a unit of the U.S. National Park Service. It preserves, protects and interprets for the public the estate and home of Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States of America. The mission of Martin Van Buren National Historic Site is to preserve Lindenwald, the home and farm of the nation's eighth president. Martin Van Buren's life bridged the 80 years between the American War for Independence and the U.S. Civil War, the critical formative years of the American Republic. He was among the most prominent Jacksonian politicians, one whose political activities were prototypical and became common practice in American politics and are still an influence. When coupled with its surroundings and vistas, Lindenwald appears as it did when Martin Van Buren lived; it provides an aesthetically pleasing resource which is intimately and tangibly related to his life. As such it allows for successful study and understanding of President Van Buren's life and times as well as a refreshing recreational resource.

He attributed it to the overexpansion of the credit and favored the establishment of an independent treasury as repository for the federal funds. In 1840, he established a 10-hour day on public works. Defeated by Harrison in 1840, he was the leading contender for the Democratic nomination in 1844 until he publicly opposed immediate annexation of Texas, and was subsequently beaten by the Southern delegations at the Baltimore convention. This incident increased his growing misgivings about the slave power. After working behind the scenes among the anti-slavery Democrats, Van Buren joined in the movement that led to the Free-Soil Party and became its candidate for president in 1848. He subsequently returned to the Democratic Party while continuing to object to its pro-Southern policy. He died in Kinderhook on July 24, 1862. His

Martin Van Buren - His Presidential Years
Martin Van Buren was the eighth President of the United States and served from 1837 to 1841. In the election of 1836, Van Buren won easily with 170 electoral votes against 73 for Harrison, 26 for White, 14 for Webster and 11 for Mangum. In popular votes Van Buren received a total of 764,176 votes compared to 550,816 for Harrison, 146,107 for White and 41,201 for Webster. The Map below shows the election results of 1836. Click on map for enlargement.
Major Issues of the Election of 1836
Van Buren disagreed with Whig candidate William Henry Harrison's revenue-sharing scheme that would return federal surplus from the proceeds of federal lands directly back to the states.
Harrison was willing to revive the Bank of the United States if the economy got out of control, while Van Buren opposed the Bank in all circumstances.
While Harrison called for a number of internal improvements, while Van Buren only intended on federally funding projects that were truly national in scope.
Van Buren's major political opponents were:
    William Henry Harrison (Whig)
    Hugh Lawson White (Whig)
    Daniel Webster (Whig)
Vice President: Richard Mentor Johnson (1780-1850)
Martin Van Buren's expertise as a political strategist which earned him the name "little magician" was used to promote Andrew Jackson , but it was of no use to him in furthering his own career as President. The main problem was the economic depression that persisted throughout most of his administration. He was further hampered by his taste for the finer things in life, which caused his critics to portray him as a dandy, indifferent to the country's sufferings. He was dubbed " Martin Van Ruin " for these economic problems, even though they were already on the scene before he took office.

... Go back to links to portraits of vice presidents. Served as president from 1837 to 1841 Martin Van Buren (1782-1862), ran for President three times but won only the first time. He served during the nation's first great depression, the Panic of 1837. The panic brought financial ruin and misery to millions. Many turned to the government for aid, but Van Buren refused to help. He believed in Thomas Jefferson's idea that government should play the smallest possible role in American life. "The less government interferes," Van Buren explained, "the better for general prosperity."
Van Buren's erect bearing and high, broad forehead gave him a dignified appearance. He had served as vice president under Andrew Jackson, and, as president, Van Buren inherited much of Jackson's popularity. But during the three years of the panic, Van Buren bore the anger of a disappointed people. His enemies accused him of being a sly, scheming politician. They called Van Buren "The Little Magician" and "The Fox of Kinderhook." They ridiculed his courteous manners. When he continued to deal politely with his political rivals, his enemies said this approach showed his lack of deep convictions.
    Van Buren's presidency
By defending his Jeffersonian ideals, Van Buren demonstrated that actually he had both deep convictions and courage. Partly because he refused to compromise, he was defeated for reelection in 1840 by William Henry Harrison, whom he had beaten in 1836. Van Buren ran again for president in 1848 but finished a poor third.
