Martin Van Buren Only about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, but trim and erect, Martin Van Buren dressed fastidiously. His impeccable appearance belied his amiabilityand his humble background. Of Dutch descent, he was born in 1782, the son of a tavernkeeper and farmer, in Kinderhook, New York. As a young lawyer he became involved in New York politics. As leader of the "Albany Regency," an effective New York political organization, he shrewdly dispensed public offices and bounty in a fashion calculated to bring votes. Yet he faithfully fulfilled official duties, and in 1821 was elected to the United States Senate. By 1827 he had emerged as the principal northern leader for Andrew Jackson. President Jackson rewarded Van Buren by appointing him Secretary of State. As the Cabinet Members appointed at John C. Calhoun's recommendation began to demonstrate only secondary loyalty to Jackson, Van Buren emerged as the President's most trusted adviser. Jackson referred to him as, "a true man with no guile."

The rift in the Cabinet became serious because of Jackson's differences with Calhoun, a Presidential aspirant. Van Buren suggested a way out of an eventual impasse: he and Secretary of War Eaton resigned, so that Calhoun men would also resign. Jackson appointed a new Cabinet, and sought again to reward Van Buren by appointing him Minister to Great Britain. Vice President Calhoun, as President of the Senate, cast the deciding vote against the appointmentand made a martyr of Van Buren.

Van Buren was born in Kinderhook in 1782, the last year of the American Revolution. He lived until July 1862, sixteen months into the American Civil War. During the seventy-nine years of his life, he was instrumental in the establishment of many of the political practices and party politics which saw the new nation from its inception to its trial by ordeal. For myself, therefore, I desire to declare that the principle that will govern me in the high duty to which my country calls me is a strict adherence to the letter and spirit of the Constitution as it was designed by those who framed it.
    Martin Van Buren, 1837
At a White House Dinner a servant came rushing up to Van Buren and whispered, "The house is on fire!" Excusing himself, Van Buren went out to the kitchen and helped quench the blaze. On returning, he explained why he had left. When he finished, Henry Clay looked up at him, putting his hand on his heart, said earnestly: "I am doing all I can to get you out of this house, but believe me, I do not want to burn you out."

    PRESIDENT MARTIN VAN BUREN
The good luck which led to Van Buren's ascent to the presidency turned sour during his one term as president. In 1836, Jackson withdrew federal deposits from the Bank of America in Philadelphia and allotted it to banks around the country and removed restrictions on inflationary practices of some state banks. This created a boom in investments initially, but it led to a bust when consumer confidence in banks dwindled. During Van Buren's presidency hundreds of banks and other businesses failed in what was at the time the worst depression the U.S. history. Also during Van Buren's term a boundary dispute with Canada erupted, relations between the U.S. and Mexico grew tense due to a dispute over what later became Texas, and "the Trail of Tears" led to the death or forced removal of thousands of Native Americans from their homes.
In 1840 Van Buren was soundly defeated by a campaign by William Henry Harrison and John Tyler ("Tippecanoe and Tyler too"). In 1848, Van Buren made an unsuccessful bid for the presidency as candidate for the the Free-Soil Party, a party of Northerners opposed to the expansion of slavery into the western territories.
Following his political career, Van Buren spent two years traveling through Europe. He then retired to a mansion in Kinderhook, N.Y. Martin Van Buren died on July 24, 1862.

Martin Van Buren National Historic Site, in Kinderhook, New York, is a unit of the U.S. National Park Service. It preserves, protects and interprets for the public the estate and home of Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States of America. The mission of Martin Van Buren National Historic Site is to preserve Lindenwald, the home and farm of the nation's eighth president. Martin Van Buren's life bridged the 80 years between the American War for Independence and the U.S. Civil War, the critical formative years of the American Republic. He was among the most prominent Jacksonian politicians, one whose political activities were prototypical and became common practice in American politics and are still an influence. When coupled with its surroundings and vistas, Lindenwald appears as it did when Martin Van Buren lived; it provides an aesthetically pleasing resource which is intimately and tangibly related to his life. As such it allows for successful study and understanding of President Van Buren's life and times as well as a refreshing recreational resource.

Martin was born in New York State. He was a lawyer. Martin had four sons. When he was vice president, he presided over the Senate wearing a pair of pistols, as a precaution against the frequent outbursts of violence. Martin had large mutton-chop sideburns. He was the first president born an American citizen. His predecessors all were born before the Declaration of Independence and thus were born British subjects. Van Buren was one of the founders of the Democratic Party. Johnson, Van Buren's Vice President was the only Vice President to be selected by the U.S. Senate. Since no one had received a majority of the electorial votes the Senate had to elect the Vice President. The U.S. had several problems during his term. Soon after he became President, hundreds of banks failed causing financial panic. Also, the arguments about slavery became more intense. He took $100,000, the sum of his salary as president for 4 years, in a lump sum at the end of his term. Martin Van Buren was defeated in the primary in 1844 by James Polk.

    Martin Van Buren
Reproduction of 1839 painting by Henry Inman Martin Van Buren was born in Kinderhook in 1782, soon after a fragile union of states successfully ended its fight for independence. His parents kept a tavern and, like their Dutch predecessors of 150 years, made a moderate living farming in the Hudson Valley. Young Martin, possessed of a fine mind and a strong ambition, embarked on a legal career at 14 with an apprenticeship to a local attorney. In 1804 he joined his half-brother's law practice in their home town. Three years later Van Buren married a distant relative and childhood sweetheart, Hannah Hoes. Meanwhile, he was becoming known as more than a country lawyer. His first appointed post, as a county official, set him on an upward course that led to the highest office in the state, and eventually, the nation. Early 19th century politics was a whirlwind of boisterous characters and opposing interest groups where a new party system was taking shape. Van Buren artfully positioned himself in the eye of the storm, persistently advocating the principles of the Jeffersonian Republicans, namely states' rights, strict constitutional construction, and civil liberties. His efforts, along with those of like-minded politicians brought about an alliance of the "planters of the South and the plain people of the North" to form the Democratic Party. During the administration of the new party's first president, the enormously popular Andrew Jackson, Van Buren served as Old Hickory's top advisor. As the eighth President (and the first to be born under the US flag) Martin Van Buren continued the the era of Jacksonian Democracy. Not until his defeat for the presidency in 1848 did Van Buren give up public life.
