Holiday in Uzbekistan I would explain that I was going to bum around in Uzbekistan (not Pakistan) and visit Christine in the Peace Corps. Brief History In 1924 a few years after the Communist Revolution, the Soviets (advised by their scholars) declared that Uzbekistan was to be a Soviet Republic. The boundaries of the Republic of Uzbekistan were set by the belief that only ethnic Uzbeks lived in the area (yeah right). For the next 70 years, Uzbekistan was essentially exploited by the Soviets. After the wall fell down in 1989, the Soviets no longer could control events in the Soviet Republics, so in 1991 Uzbekistan declared its independence from the Soviet Union. Vinci: Uzbekistan air base shrouded in secrecy
Vinci (CNN) Pentagon sources said Tuesday more than 1,000 U.S. troops, including special operations forces, are at the Khanabad military base near Karshi, Uzbekistan, roughly 100 miles north of Afghanistan. Alessio Vinci, CNN's bureau chief in Rome, has been trying to get additional information on what the troops are preparing to do there. VINCI: Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov agreed to allow the U.S. military to use the air base near Karshi only for humanitarian missions. When a reporter asked him why he would not allow U.S. troops to be involved in more lethal operations, he said his country was not ready yet. But he did leave some room for maneuvering perhaps, suggesting he would allow those troops to be deployed here for more ground operations in Afghanistan. Karimov also said he was not going to investigate very much into what kind of troops were going to be deployed here, [saying] again that perhaps only for public opinion he did not want to allow U.S. troops to be deployed here for strikes against Afghanistan, and [that they were being allowed here] only for humanitarian missions.

U.S.-Uzbekistan pact leaves door open to military
From Elise Labott CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) Uzbekistan will provide the United States with use of its airspace and the "necessary military and civilian infrastructure" of one of its airports in the U.S.-led campaign against Afghanistan, both countries announced Friday. Uzbekistan's president last week said he would allow the U.S. military to use an Uzbek air base for humanitarian purposes. But a joint U.S.-Uzbek agreement signed on Sunday, the day the strikes began, appears to leave the door open for offensive purposes as well. The agreement established "a strong basis for bilateral cooperation in the struggle against terrorism," the two nations said. The statement makes official the cooperation that is already in motion between the two countries. Pentagon sources say more than 1,000 U.S. troops, including special operations forces, are at the Khanabad military base near Karshi, Uzbekistan, roughly 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of the Afghan border.

U.S. signs anthrax deal with Uzbekistan
TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (CNN) The United States and Uzbekistan have signed an agreement to remove large quantities of anthrax from a germ-warfare test site used by the former Soviet Union, Western sources in Tashkent told CNN Tuesday. The site located in a remote island in the Aral Sea was used by the Russian military until 1992 and was the largest biological testing site in the former Soviet Union. "I do not know how much anthrax is buried there, and I do not really think anybody knows," said the Western source, adding that the Russians tried to get rid of a large quantity of anthrax spores years after abandoning the site. Under the deal, signed Monday in the Uzbek capital, the United States pledged to spend $6 million to dismantle, clean up and decontaminate the site, the source said.

Uzbekistan opens border town to U.N.
By CNN's Alessio Vinci TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (CNN) Uzbekistan says it will give U.N. aid agencies access to its southern border town and river port of Termez. The agencies will be able to use the "port and barges to move humanitarian aid to northern Afghanistan," said U.N. Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, Kenzo Oshima, after meeting with Uzbek leaders. Humanitarian groups have had trouble reaching northern parts of Afghanistan, where U.N. officials say half a million people have been internally displaced and up to three million need aid. Besides the U.S. airstrikes, the agencies have been hampered by fighting between the ruling Taliban and Northern Alliance opposition forces. Many Afghans have also fled to many remote locations.  CNN.com Asia
