Central Asia is one of the most ancient regions inhabited by man and one of the oldest centers of human cultures, as attested by numerous relics. The territory of present day Uzbekistan was the crossroads of Eurasia and a branch of the ancient Silk Road. It connected Europe and China, passed through the oasis settlements of Kokand, Samarkand and Bukhara. Is Samarkand region archeologists have discovered an area where primitive men lived more than 10,000 years ago. In the South of Uzbekistan a skeleton of the ancient man and some remarkable rock drawings were discovered. Traces of primitive men have also been found near Tashkent, in Khoresm and in the Kara-Kalpak region. In antiquity, the peoples of Central Asia maintained trade and cultural relations with the peoples of China, India, Iran, the Arab countries, the Mediterranean area, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Siberia.

    THE TURKIC KAGANATE
The Turkic Kaganate, a huge Turkic state appeared in 500-600 A.D as a result of the union of diverse nomadic tribes and peoples of the Altai. During the 6th century the tribes extended their rule over the territory of Central Asia. It was a period of the assimilation of various ethnic groups of the kaganate and the formation of large and small alliances of tribes with related languages and dialects. The kaganate played a great role in uniting and consolidating nomadic speaking Turkish, which roamed and settled down in the Central Asian steppes and oases.

Uzbekistan's blend of desert, steppe, oasis and river valley place it at the heart of the complex interaction of nomadic culture and oasis settlement that patterns the history of Central Asia. Uzbekistan is the ‘land of the Uzbeks', forms the very centre of ex-Soviet Central Asia, For it alone boarders each of the new republics - Kazakhstan to the north, Kyrgystan and Tajikistan to the east and southeast, Turkmenistan to the southwest. Uzbeks remain a clear majority in their republic, accounting for almost 75 per cent of the total population of 22.5 million. Most of its territory of 447,400 square kilometres (roughly the size of Sweden) lies between the two major rivers of Central Asia, the Syr Darya (Jaxartes) and the Amu Darya (Oxus). The rich architectural inheritance of Uzbekistan is endowed with some of the most audacious buildings in the Islamic world. They are the legacy of a series of Central Asian rulers from the Turkic holders to Tamerlane to the Khivan khans , who created breathtaking monuments to their own immortality in an attempt to leave enduring mark on restless nomadic lands. The heavy swell of a melon dome, the graceful arch of a madrassah portal and the bold silhouette of a towering minaret form some of the most evocative images a traveller will carry away with him and sound the clearest echoes of past splendour.

    History
The land along the upper Amu-Darya, Syr-Darya and their tributaries has always been different from the rest of Central Asia. Its people are more settled than nomadic, with patterns of land use and social structures that changed little from the 6th century BC to the 19th century. The region was part of several very old Persian states. During the 4th century BC, Alexander the Great passed through and married the daughter of a local chieftain near Samarkand. Under the Kushan empire, Buddhism took hold and the Silk Road brought peaceful contact with the wider world. Towns grew and the area became rich. In the 6th century AD, Western Turks rode out of the steppes, bringing Islam and a written alphabet. When they moved on to greener pastures, Persia took over again, until Jenghiz Khan and his hordes rolled over the country. With the rise of the ruthless warrior Timur in the 14th century, Uzbekistan again rose to prosperity and Samarkand became a glittering Islamic capital thanks to his patronage of the arts. Around this time, certain Mongol tribes took the name Uzbek. In the 14th century they began moving south, eventually conquering Timur's empire. By 1510 they had control of everything from the Amu-Darya to the Syr-Darya, and they have maintained control ever since. In the early 18th century the khan of Khiva asked Peter the Great of Russia for aid in defending his land against Turkmen and Kazaks, stirring the first Russian interest in Central Asia. However, by the time the Russians got around to marching on Khiva, the khan no longer wanted their help and massacred almost the entire army. Apart from a few minor forays, the next major Russian excursion was made in 1839 by Tsar Nicholas I, who was eager to prevent British expansion in the area, but the mission was not a great success. Twenty-five years later the Russians again made a serious move on Uzbekistan and by 1875 the region was theirs.

The culture of the nations found in the territory of Uzbekistan has a very rich history. In the 8th century the armies of an Arab caliph invaded Mawarannahr ("The Land Beyond River"), the territory between the Amudarya river, the Syrdarya river and the land of Khorasan lying to the south of the Amudarya river. This conquest brought a new religion that had risen in Saudi Arabia called Islam. At the same time, there was fire-worship and other religions such as Buddhism, Judaism and Christianity. Since then Islam has dominated far beyond this region and became an extremely important part of its culture. Mawarannahr was one of the most advanced caliphate regions playing a significant role in social and cultural life. The Great Silk Road linked the West with the Orient and people from southern and northern countries passed through this land. The Mawarannahr towns of Bukhara, Samarkand and Kunya-Urgench were the crossroads of caravan routes from India, China, Egypt, Byzantium, Slavic countries and Arabia.

    Uzbekistan: History
The history of Uzbekistan, its culture and statehood, foreign economic and social ties of the territory is more than 2.5 millennia. Uzbekistan's freedom loving population fought for its independence against all foreign invaders during centuries. Situated on the crossroads of the Great Silk Road, the region played an important role in the dialogue of different civilizations. its flourishing in the ancient times, then during the reign of the Samanids and Timurids is connected with the involvement of the region in the international economic interrelations. As far back as in the pre-Islamic period, Zoroastrism the world spread religious system was born on the territory of the present day Uzbekistan (in Khorezm) and became common property of all mankind. There was formed the highest technological culture of those times: town-planning, irrigation systems, armory, silk-weaving, cultivation of grain, cotton, grapes and fruits. In those times local technologies and master-craftsmen (Ustos) were highly valued and appreciated. The synthetic character is rather typical for this particular civilization: Combination of achievements gained by the Sogdians, peoples of Khorezm, Turks, India, China, Iran, Middle East and by Hellenism. The religious extension of Islam to Maverannahr, accompanied by military invasions of the Arabs in the 7-8th centuries met with the resistance from the local religious tradition, embodied in the Zoroastrism of the Sogdians and Backtrians, Buddhism of the residents of Balkh and the Upper Amudarya, and the growing authority of the Christian communities. However later on the population of the region was convinced in the great cultural and moral possibilities of Islam.

UZBEKISTAN The heart of central Asia, Uzbekistan is today made up of peoples descended from Mongol, Turkic, and Iranian tribes, along with indigenous nomadic peoples. Russia's conquest of the Uzbeks commenced in the 18th century and the region was totally under Russian control by 1876. This dominance was solidified with the construction of the Transcaucasian Railway that linked the major cities of the territory. The influx of ethnic Russians was not well-received by the local peoples at the turn of the 20th century. Rioting broke out then and 18 years later, right before the Soviets established their control over the region. In 1924, the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic was created. For the next several years, attempts were made quash Islam and its adherent in Uzbekistan. At the same time, the Soviets tried to improve literacy and expand the industrial capabilities of the country. During the second World War, much industry was transferred to this relatively remote area to protect it from attack. In 1991, independence was declared, later joining the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

Throughout these turbulent times, the cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Tashkent, situated on major trade routes to China, India, Persia, and Europe, were centers of prosperity, culture, and fabulous luxury. In the early 16th cent., the Uzbek, formerly called Sarts, invaded the region from the northwest. A remnant of the empire of the Golden Horde , they took their name from Uzbeg Khan (d. 1340), from whom their dynasty claimed descent. Later in the 16th cent., the Uzbek leader Abdullah extended his domain over parts of Persia, Afghanistan, and Chinese Turkistan; but the empire soon broke up into separate principalities, notably Khiva, Kokand, and Bukhara.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Russia conquered Uzbekistan in the late 19th century. Stiff resistance to the Red Army after World War I was eventually suppressed and a socialist republic set up in 1925. During the Soviet era, intensive production of "white gold" (cotton) and grain led to overuse of agrochemicals and the depletion of water supplies, which have left the land poisoned and the Aral Sea and certain rivers half dry. Independent since 1991, the country seeks to gradually lessen its dependence on agriculture while developing its mineral and petroleum reserves. Current concerns include terrorism by Islamic militant groups from Tajikistan and Afghanistan, a non-convertible currency, and the curtailment of human rights and democratization. History
After Moscow's 1991 coup, Uzbekistan was declared independent, and its Communist Party changed its name but retained everything else. The party's leader, Karimov, has held onto power ever since, largely because genuine opposition groups are still not allowed to contest elections. In fact, since independence his power has grown and dissent has shriveled, thanks to restrictions on travel, political activism and publishing, the introduction of a virtual police state, and the ever-present threat of violence. Officially Uzbekistan is a multi-party democracy, but in reality opposition groups are terrorized out of existence. Karimov ran unopposed in the 1995 elections. In 1999, militant Islamic groups struggled to overthrow the government. Sixteen people were killed and hundreds injured in Tashkent by bomb blasts that February. Uzbek fighter planes have not been successful in their attempts to dislodge the Islamic gunmen who have stationed themselves across the southern border. Modern History
Weakened by internecine warfare, these states were conquered by Russian forces, who took Tashkent in 1865, Samarkand and Bukhara in 1868, and Khiva in 1873. Kokand was annexed outright to the Russian empire, but Khiva and Bukhara remained under their native rulers as vassal states of Russia. Efforts by Uzbek leaders to establish a European-style democratic republic in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917 were unsuccessful.

[Change image] [Upload image] Located in the heart of Central Asia between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya Rivers Uzbekistan has a long and interesting heritage. The leading cities of the famous Silk Road Samarkand Bukhara and Khivaare located in Uzbekistan and many famous conquerors passed through the land. Alexander the Great stopped near Samarkand on his way to India in 327 B.C. and married Roxanna daughter of a local chieftain. Conquered by Muslim Arabs in the eigth century A.D. the indigenous Samanid dynasty established an empire in the 9th century. Its territory was overrun by Genghis Khan and his Mongols in 1220. In the 1300's Timur known in the west as Tamerlane built an empire with its capital at Samarkand. Uzbekistan's most noted tourist sights date from the Timurid dynasty. Later separate Muslim city-states emerged with strong ties to Persia. Russian trade with this region grew during the 16th and 17th centuries and in 1865 Russia occupied Tashkent. By the end of the 19th century Russia has conquered all of Central Asia. During this time hostilities between Russia and Great Britain were prevented by Afghanistan which served as a buffer state between the two empires and through an agreement that East Turkestan was to be under Chinese rule.
