Post-Soviet blues and the Greeks of Uzbekistan
By: Neos Kosmos
Nov 16, 2003, 21:00
Samarkand is what lures tourists to Uzbekistan.
Nick Dallas continues his trek into Uzbekistan to discover once more that the Greek element is evident from the time of Alexander's passing. Today, though much has changed, Greeks still wrestle with issues of dual ethnicity and have emerged with a unique sense of identity regardless of what the future might hold.
ISTANBUL 1995. Zeki Bey, Uzbekistan guzel mu? (Mr Zeki Is Uzbekistan beautiful?)
Getting back to my language class, frequent mention of Uzbekistan put me in research mode. I knew there were regular flights between Istanbul and Tashkent, all I had to do was wait for the semester break and make a run for it. However the visa situation was a bit stultifying. Soviet-era visa regulations had remained unchanged for most of the Central Asian republics. You required a letter of support or invitation from a recognised tour agency. Your itinerary had to be outlined in advance, so did prepaid accommodation at officially prescribed hotels. For a traditional backpacker like myself, all this was a bit off-putting, let alone hideously expensive. The idea was put on the backburner just like numerous other travel plans but Central Asia remained on my radar screen ever since.

Tourist facilities are not highly developed, and many of the goods and services taken for granted in other countries are not yet available. Internal travel and travel to other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), including both air and land routes, can be erratic and disrupted by fuel shortages, overcrowding and other problems. Entry Requirements: A passport and visa are required. Private travel must be arranged in one of three ways: First, through a travel agency which has a relationship with Uzbektourism; second, via an invitation from a locally-registered firm or organization requesting visa issuance through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; or, third, via an invitation from an Uzbek individual requesting visa issuance through his/her local Office of Exit, Entry, and Citizenship (OEEC). All three methods may take up to a month to process. Visas are issued at Uzbekistan embassies and consulates abroad or, in countries where Uzbekistan does not have diplomatic representation, at Russian embassies and consulates. Uzbekistan and its Civilization, Historical Grounds
The history of culture and statehood, foreign economic and social ties of the territory is more than 2.5 millennia. Its freedom loving population fought for its independence against all foreign invaders. Situated on the crossroads of the Great Silk Road, the region played an important role in the dialogue of different civilizations. its flourishing in the ancient times, then during the reign of the Samanids and Timurids is connected with the involvement of the region in the international economic interrelations. As far back as in the pre-Islamic period, Zoroastrism the world spread religious system was born on the territory of the present dayUzbekistan (in Khorezm) and became common property of ail mankind. There formed the highest technological culture of those times: town-planning, irrigation systems, armory, silk-weaving, cultivation of grain, cotton, grapes and fruits. In those times local technologies and master-craftsman (Ustos) were highly valued and appreciated. The synthetic character is rather typical for this particular civilization: Combination of achievements gained by the Sogdians, peoples of Khorezm, Turks, India, China, Iran, Middle East and by Hellenism. The religious extension of Islam to Maverannahr, accompanied by military invasions of the Arabs in the 7-8th centuries met with the resistance from the local religious tradition, embodied in the Zoroastrism of the Sogdians and Backtrians, Buddhism of the residents of Balkh and the Upper Amudarya, and the growing authority of the Christian communities. However later on the population of the regionwas convinced in the great cultural and moral possibilities of Islam.

Central Asia is one of the most ancient regions inhabited by man and one of the oldest centers of human cultures, as attested by numerous relics. The territory of present day Uzbekistan was the crossroads of Eurasia and a branch of the ancient Silk Road. It connected Europe and China, passed through the oasis settlements of Kokand, Samarkand and Bukhara. Is Samarkand region archeologists have discovered an area where primitive men lived more than 10,000 years ago. In the South of Uzbekistan a skeleton of the ancient man and some remarkable rock drawings were discovered. Traces of primitive men have also been found near Tashkent, in Khoresm and in the Kara-Kalpak region. In antiquity, the peoples of Central Asia maintained trade and cultural relations with the peoples of China, India, Iran, the Arab countries, the Mediterranean area, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Siberia.
    UPSURGE AND DEPRIVATION
    ALEXANDER THE GREAT
    THE TURKIC KAGANATE
The Turkic Kaganate, a huge Turkic state appeared in 500-600 A.D as a result of the union of diverse nomadic tribes and peoples of the Altai. During the 6th century the tribes extended their rule over the territory of Central Asia. It was a period of the assimilation of various ethnic groups of the kaganate and the formation of large and small alliances of tribes with related languages and dialects. The kaganate played a great role in uniting and consolidating nomadic speaking Turkish, which roamed and settled down in the Central Asian steppes and oases.

    History
Culture The answer lies in the specific nature of the Uzbek identity, the most significant factor being it is an Islamic identity. This not only religious, but also cultural adherence has had lasting implications on all aspects of Uzbek life. In their further molding of the Uzbek historical identity, the Soviets revealed their own deep-seated prejudices against the descendants of the Golden Horde, since they had disgraced the Russians upon arriving in Mawaraunnahr (Transoxania) at the end of the fifteenth century. They rehabilitated and popularized the traditional Uzbek rival, Amir Timur, while trying to distance the Uzbeks from their more likely ancestral link, Chinggis Khan (who had also dominated the Russians for over two centuries). Professor Aleksandr Iakubovskii, the official Soviet historiographer, promoted many of these notions in his authorized history of Uzbekistan during the 1930s and 1940s. Even in their "token restitution" of the great medieval Chaghatai poet Mir Ali Shir (his pen name was Nawaig), the Soviet's anti-Uzbek bias persisted. For Mir Ali Shir was a Timurid, and the 1938 publications of his work omitted the Muslim praises for Allah with which his writings always began. It would be incomplete to leave this discussion of Islam's role in Uzbekistan's cultural development without at least briefly addressing the present situation. Since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Uzbekistan has won its independence and now must situate itself in a new world order. Its newly-recognized status as a Muslim nation presents further intricacies in both its domestic and foreign relations.

The General Consulate of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Greece
Since ancient times, the geopolitical location of Uzbekistan has been where the main caravan roads traversed to link Asia and Europe, predicating the historical richness of the land. The country is situated in the middle of Central Asia between the Amu-Darya and Syr- Darya rivers and was named "maa-waraa-nahr" by Arabs, meaning "a place between two rivers". From ancient times, the wealth of the land attracted foreign conquerors. In the third and fourth centuries B.C., Central Asia was conquered by the Macedonians. Conquest by Alexander the Great had a great effect on the economic and cultural development of the peoples of the East, West and Central Asia. In the middle of the third century B.C., the conquered regions became independent and local dynasties came to power. Bactria, which included the southern parts of Uzbekistan and Tadjikistan, became the hub of the Greek- Bactrian empire and later came under control of the Kushan empire. After the conquest of Central Asia by Alexander the Great, studies of the subsequent period depict development and the heyday of architecture, painting, handcrafts, and music. During the seventh and eighth centuries, Central Asia was conquered by the Arab Khalifat. The Arabs took over these countries under the mission of spreading the new religion of Islam. As a result, their conquest entirely changed the region's way of life. Building construction, art and science declined under the pressures of war and continued only in the middle of the nineth century. This was connected with the creation of independent empires ruled by the dynasties of the local aristocracy: the Tahirids and Samanids. In the l0th century, the Arabs were forced to withdraw their troops and the Samanids rose to power.

Johannes Kalter Almut von Gladiss Gisela Helmecke Maria Zerrnickel ‘A well-conceived and beautifully presented book … an authoritative survey of the subject’ – Asian Affairs The Silk Road has lost nothing of its fascination. It continues to evoke images of heavily laden caravans crossing endless deserts, steppes and mountain ranges to reach the markets of wealthy oasis towns. From the second century bc, this network of merchants’ routes, well over 4,000 miles long, linked China and the Roman Empire. It served the trade of luxury goods, notably silk, and stimulated the spread of religion, culture and art. The young republic of Uzbekistan, with its ancient urban cultural centres of Bukhara, Chiwa and Samarkand, is the heartland of the Silk Road. The artistic and cultural history of the region through more than two millennia is clearly explained in the context of its complex geography, together with analyses of the architecture, the art of the book, Islamic arts and crafts, and the rich variety of textiles of the region. Central Asia’s position has attracted a long succession of conquerors, traders, envoys and missionaries. Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and Timur all led armies from here whose subjugation of large parts of the East had repercussions on the whole of Europe and laid the foundations of a great empire in which trade, the exchange of ideas and the arts could flourish. The synthesis of these influences has led to a unique and individual culture.
