Uzbekistan: Samarkand History and Culture Museum
May 2003, Samarkand, Uzbekistan: The Samarkand History and Culture Museum in Uzbekistan received the Ambassador’s Cultural Preservation Fund Grant of $14,200. The grant was used to improve conditions in the hall displaying ancient Islamic manuscripts and Korans. The oldest Koran in the hall dates back to the 11th century and is written on palm leaves. The old display room was only 25 square meters, extremely humid and cold during the winter and excessively dry and hot during the summer. With the support of the Deputy Governor of Samarkand Province, a larger space, 140 square meters, was donated for the project. The grant money refurbished the gallery hall, installed proper temperature control and light systems, and purchased appropriate, museum-quality showcases. The new Koran room opened in May 2003 and was attended by local clergy and the Governor of Samarkand Province, Shavkhat Mirziyaev, who stated that the opening of the refurbished hall was “made possible thanks to the efforts of the American Embassy and the Ambassador’s Culture Preservation Fund. Cooperation with the U.S. continues not only in military areas but also in the areas of culture, education and shared values.” A $10,000 supplement was donated to digitize part of the museum collection and to purchase TV monitors to display artifacts.

A Quick Look at the Culture of Uzbekistan
    By Artur Stepanyan
My name is Artur. I live in the Republic of Uzbekistan, which used to be part of the Soviet Union. This picture was taken with my family. Behind my family you can see the back of the little shops. These are called Tabasco shops. Usually they are open 24 hours a day. They sell sack food, cigarette, pop, and alcohol. Uzbekistan has an interesting culture and very special people. The capital of Uzbekistan is Tashkent. Tashkent is the fourth biggest city in Russia. The president of Uzbekistan when I left home in 1996 was Islam Karimov. The population in the capital is 2.8 million people. After the Soviet Union broke up, Uzbekistan became an independent republic. The economy has been growing very fast for the last four years. Uzbekistan has attracted a few big international companies like IBM, Coca Cola, Daewoo, etc. Uzbekistan is a country full of history. There are old cities such as Samarkand and Shahrezybs where you will find many traditional buildings, statues and monuments. Visitors in those cities are always welcome. Each year tourists from all over the world come to visit. The most interesting place for tourists, I think, is the farmers’ market. The markets give them a big choice of the greatest fresh fruits and vegetables. The average family has three or four children. My family is not too big. I have a brother who is 15 and, of course, a mother and a father. My mother is a professor at the university. She specializes in literature and Russian language. My father owns a food company. My brother is a student in high school. I am studying at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in the United States. My major is international law.

Tashkent - Culture Amir Timur Museum The Uzbek capital, once the fourth largest city in the former USSR, is Central Asia's hub and has better international flight connections than any other city in the region. That said, it's not a picture-postcard destination. Thanks to a huge earthquake in 1966 and the subsequent enthusiasm of Soviet planners, little remains of the city's 2000-year history. Most visitors agree that Tashkent is the most Soviet city in Central Asia and it's said that many of the region's anxious Slavs who won't or can't return to the Motherland are moving to the relative cultural security of this city since it is still at least half Russian-speaking (if not Russian). It's worth taking a stroll around the remnants of the old town, eski shakhar. This maze of narrow dusty streets lined by low, mudbrick houses, mosques and medressas (Islamic academies) seems to have been spared by Soviet planners to show what things would have been like without the glories of socialism. Kukeldash Medressa is a grand 16th century academy undergoing restoration, whose plaza overflows with worshippers on warm Friday mornings; the tiny 15th century Jami mosque nearby was used during the Soviet era as a sheet metal workshop. Chorsu Bazaar, a huge open market beside Kukeldash, draws crowds of people from the countryside, many in traditional dress. "On your first visit, you are a guest. On the second, you are a friend.

Bukhara - Culture B ukhara is one of the most famous cities on the ancient Silk Road. With buildings spanning 1000 years of history and a thoroughly lived-in city centre that hasn't changed much in two centuries, Bukhara is one of the best places in Central Asia to catch a glimpse of pre-Russian Turkestan. The old part of town offers an incredible number of sights. The first or last stop of any visit should be the Lab-i-Hauz, a great place to relax, sit, drink tea (or something stronger) and wait for the fountains to start again. Seen from the Lab-i-Hauz the Ark or Citadel is at the other end of town. Between those two are magnificent Koranic schools, impressive mosques and a big tall minaret with a history that will make you shiver. The central ensemble of Bukhara - Poi-Kalon Pillar seems to rule over the city. The vertical forms of columns were made by the Islamic architecture not only to call the people for pray, but as a symbol of a power of the spiritual rulers. The Ismail Samani mausoleum is the oldest monument in Bukhara. It was built by Ismail Samani, one of the rulers of the Samanid dynasty. The grey-coloured ornamentation is never the same when light shines upon it. The mausoleum is considered to be the masterpiece of the medieval architecture. Click To Go Back

    Samarkand, Uzbekistan
    November 14,, 1997
Thank you so much, Mr. President. You may be assured that I will carry your warm words and your kind invitation to my husband, who is quite sad that I have had the opportunity to come to Uzbekistan first. I know that if there is any way possible, he will want, also, to come and see your beautiful country and I hope that will come to pass. I want to thank you and Mrs. Karimova for the very warm and gracious welcome and hospitality that I have received from you and from your people. In the last two and a half days, I have met with professional and business women in Tashkent to talk about what nongovernmental organizations are doing. I have talked with university students in Tashkent and teenagers in Bukhara about their questions as they asked me in English with great confidence in their voices about what was going on in the United States and what I thought of them and their country. I complimented them because I have met with students from all over the worldand I say this not because I am here in Samarkand, I will say it when I return homeI have never met with groups of young people, young men and young women who were better prepared and asked better questions than the ones I met with in both Tashkent and Bukhara. I have also had the opportunity to visit your ancient monuments and I want to thank the people of Bukhara and Samarkand for opening these monuments for the entire world to appreciate.

Because Wahhabism served as a source for Saudi legitimacy, the term Wahhabism can also be used (by Karimov) to disparage any outside form of Islam, in contrast to local Sufi traditions. Its characterization as radically fundamentalist may be a product of Western orientalism.
