Introductory Note:
  • The cultures of Central Asia and Iran share a number of remarkable features. They are Islamic, albeit Sunnite and Shi'ite, and they enjoy a common cosmology and mythology. Additionally, they share the same early history. Indeed, until the rise of the Western Turks and the subsequent coming of the Turks and Mongols to Central Asia, the primary population of the region was Iranian. As descendants of the earlier Indo-European peoples, they followed the teachings of Zoroaster and worshiped his God, Ahura Mazda.
  • From the foregoing, we can conclude that any social, political, or ideological study of the early history of this region must take this common heritage into consideration. To respect the shared values of the Iranian and the Central Asian peoples, therefore, the following arrangement is adhered to. The more recent events appear under "Central Asia" and "Iran" respectively. The ancient and medieval issues that cannot be logically divided appear under "Central Asia and Iran."
  • This web page covers a vast area from Africa to India and from Kazakhstan to the Persian Gulf. It also

http://www.umid.uz/Main/Uzbekistan/Culture/culture.html
We - Uzbeks have an interesting rich cultural heritage from the merging of centuries old and modern civilizations. Wherever you come in Uzbekistan, Everywhere hospitable hosts will greet you, saying "Assalomu Alaykum!" It seems that there is nothing special when people greet their friends, relatives and guests. But in Uzbekistan, the greeting is something special. The words of the greeting follow in a definite order, for example: " Assalomu Alaykum! Yahshi yuribsizmi? Uyingizdigilar tinch-omon, yahshi yurishibdimi?" From Uzbek it means: "Hi! How are you? How are your nears and dears?" answering the questions the interlocutor shall ask the same questions. When men meet each other they shake their hands by putting their left hand on their heart, which means that the greeting comes from the deep heart. The best tradition of Uzbeks is hospitality. Everyone, regardless of position is always treated as if he was sent by God. Even the poor are always trying to share with travelers whatever they can offer and their only demand as payment for their hospitality is that traveler relates his stories to them. Curiosity is another feature of Uzbek people. They like to communicate with others and interact between themselves. They like meeting people and hope that by treating their guests warmly the gesture will be reciprocated. Another common pastime of Uzbek people, they like to spend their leisure time in bazaars and Choyhonas!

Knife Making According to the archaeological data, knife manufacture on the territory of Usbekistan has been known since ancient times. Knives had different magic protective functions, and this is witnessed by the names of different knives, which were called on to protect people from evil spirits. There were also popular beliefs about the antidote effect for venomous snake bites of the touch of a knife haft. It was considered that, if there was a sacred knife in the house, a son would be born. It was also believed that the water used in the process of knife grinding was able to cure illnesses, and the masters of the craft referred the knife to a number of sacred things. There are different models of artistic knives at the State Museum of the History of the People of Uzbekistan, the State Art Museum and the Museum of Applied Arts. There has not been a special study of the artistic decoration of knives, but nevertheless they are recorded in the Fine Art literature of T.Abdullaev, D.Fakhretdinova and S.Bulatov. In the eighteenth century the features of the different local styles of knife making had appeared which would lead to the formation of the various local schools on the whole territory of Uzbekistan in the nine-teenth century, and by the turn of the century the main centres of knife manufacture had de-veloped in Khiva, Bukhara, Chust, Tashkent, Kokand, Shakhrikhan, Karasu, Samarkand, Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya. During that period knife making was devel-oped on the basis of small private workshops of craftsmen working by themselves, and such masters were still working in many towns and settlements up to the 1920s. At the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries important centres of knife trade grew up at Khiva, Chust and Karasu. The Khivan knives of the period were distinguished by their graceful shapes and the abundance of carved pattern stretching from the knife handle to the steel blade. Among the masters of the Khivan school were the very popular usto Atadjan Madraimov (1884-1916) and his sons Madraim and Jumaniyaz Madraimov.
