Salt Lake Community College is a multi-campus, comprehensive institution serving a diverse population through lifelong education. The College's mission focuses on student needs in an open-door setting. SLCC is committed to: vocational and technical education (resulting in marketable job skills in a changing world); general education and pre-professional programs (for transfer to other colleges and universities); adult and continuing education in cooperation with business and industry (to enrich the opportunities of citizens); developmental education designed to support students making a special transition to college life; community services education providing service and activities that promote community involvement; and students services, which support education and promote responsible choices through collegewide programs and activities. In Utah, SLCC provides more technical/vocational training than any other college, university, proprietary school, advanced technology center or high school district. On an average year, the College serves more than 55,000 students through credit and non-credit courses (unduplicated head count) at Utah's largest and most comprehensive community college. The College, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1998, maintains personal student interaction, with the student to faculty ratio at 18 to 1. About 10 percent of SLCC students identified themselves as having a disability or disadvantage, which can be serviced by the College's Disability Resource Center or through the Skills Center, a division that provides about 30 short-term vocational training programs.

http://www.sanjuanbasintechschool.org/history.htm
History of the Technical School
In 1963, many citizens in Southwest Colorado were quite concerned about the future of their school children, as many did not finish high school. Many that did were not prepared to enter the world of work. With the passage of the National Vocational Education Act of 1963 (P.L. 88-210), there seemed to be a new tool available to enhance educational opportunities for youth. In 1964, the Mancos (RE-6) School District Board of Education first looked at establishing an area vo-tech school in southwestern Colorado and financed a study of vocational needs. The study was conducted by personnel from the University of Northern Colorado and included the feasibility of an Area Vocational School. The school at that time covered four different states and was quite a visionary idea. During that time, the project shrunk, due to a lack of available funds, from a four state concept to a three district concept. The next four years were a period of extreme frustration. School officials of Cortez, Dolores, Mancos, and Dove Creek worked on the area school project and financed two more local studies and applications for designation for an Area Vocational School. A Board of Cooperative Services was formed in 1967, with its primary mission to establish or obtain a Vocational School. Only Montezuma and Dolores Counties were left in the projected school boundaries as of the end of 1968.

Press Release Novell, State of Utah Deliver on 'School-To-Career' Initiative With Implementation of Novell Education Academic Partner Program Utah's First High School CNA, Novell Executives Honored at UVSC Conference OREM, Utah April 18, 1996 Novell Inc.'s contribution to Utah public education, and an early representative of a new program's success Utah's first high school student to earn Novell certification were recognized today at the "Second Annual Conference of Technical Preparation." The conference, held at Utah Valley State College (UVSC) in Orem, focused on "transitioning to a school-to-career-system," an effort to strengthen the vocational base being offered to high school students. Utah Gov. Michael O. Leavitt embraces the concept and Novell's program as a big step toward the "SmartUTAH" initiative. The new Novell Education Academic Partner-Secondary (NEAP-Secondary) program enables participating non-profit secondary schools to offer Novell-authorized classes, allowing high school students to prepare for Novell's globally-recognized technical certification, the Certified Novell Administrator (CNA). Upon earning certification, students are prepared to compete in today's job market and gain access to well-paying information technology (IT) careers in networking, an area Money Magazine names in three of their "top 10 careers."
