Press Release Novell, State of Utah Deliver on 'School-To-Career' Initiative With Implementation of Novell Education Academic Partner Program Utah's First High School CNA, Novell Executives Honored at UVSC Conference OREM, Utah April 18, 1996 Novell Inc.'s contribution to Utah public education, and an early representative of a new program's success Utah's first high school student to earn Novell certification were recognized today at the "Second Annual Conference of Technical Preparation." The conference, held at Utah Valley State College (UVSC) in Orem, focused on "transitioning to a school-to-career-system," an effort to strengthen the vocational base being offered to high school students. Utah Gov. Michael O. Leavitt embraces the concept and Novell's program as a big step toward the "SmartUTAH" initiative. The new Novell Education Academic Partner-Secondary (NEAP-Secondary) program enables participating non-profit secondary schools to offer Novell-authorized classes, allowing high school students to prepare for Novell's globally-recognized technical certification, the Certified Novell Administrator (CNA). Upon earning certification, students are prepared to compete in today's job market and gain access to well-paying information technology (IT) careers in networking, an area Money Magazine names in three of their "top 10 careers."

DATC press release I am proud to announce what I believe to be the first ever Linux-based class to be held in any public school. Today begins the start of Linux' inroads into the mainstream educational arena here at the Davis Applied Technology Center (http://www.datc.tec.ut.us) . The class itself, Introduction to GNU/Linux, is a course designed for people who have had some experience in computers, but do not know what Linux is, or how it operates. It does require some hands-on experience with computers, but only to make sure that students understand basic hardware and software concepts. It is also the fruit of a survey question asked of the Linux community in October's issue of the Linux Gazette (http://www.linuxgazette.com/) The curriculum can be used as a self-paced/self-study guide (as is our normal mode of classwork here at DATC) or you can just as easily use it as an instructor's guide on the secondary educational level. I would also encourage those teaching undergrad-level college or technical courses to make full use of this document, once it is posted on the LDP.

Utah State Board of Education Proposal
Board Revision of October 29, 2003
    Performance Plus:
    Tuning Up Utah’s Great
    Education Engine
Introduction: Performance Plus Utah’s educational results are outstanding and the envy of many in the United States, especially as compared to the dollar spent per child for public education. Our public, parents, educators, and state leaders can be pleased with the excellence in Utah’s classrooms, as our schools are wonderful engines of industry and achievement. As with any great engine, an occasional tune-up improves performance and provides greater efficiency in operation. The desire for all students to be better prepared led to the adoption of a November 1, 2002 Board motion on “increasing student competency.” This action resonated well with Governor Michael O. Leavitt, who has long advocated for a system of competency-based education. Subsequently, the 2003 Utah State Legislature passed, and the Governor signed, Senate Bill 154 directing the Board and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to:
    • Focus on core academics Increase graduation requirements Ensure that high school seniors are progressing in challenging courses Implement competency standards for progress and graduation
The resulting proposal titled Performance Plus was created This plan reflects a confluence of legislation from No Child Left Behind, SB154, and U-PASS, as well as the experience and wisdom of successful educators and leaders throughout Utah.
