Allowing guns in Utah schools is nutty By LaVarr Webb
I'm a moderately conservative Republican who owns guns. I've owned guns nearly my whole life. Some of my fondest memories come from tramping the fields and marshes hunting waterfowl or pheasants and hiking to the top of Blue Mountain in San Juan County on the opening day of the deer hunt.
I think people ought to be able to own guns, and I'm a staunch defender of that right.
However, I don't believe guns belong in schools. And I also believe that private property owners ought to be able to control whether people bring guns onto their property.
While polls clearly show my beliefs on this issue are mainstream Utah, I realize that I am at odds with some of my conservative brothers and sisters in the Legislature who fervently believe that people with concealed weapons permits should be able to pack their guns nearly anywhere they please.
I don't have a problem with concealed weapons permits. Utah law allows essentially any law-abiding citizen to obtain such a permit, and many thousands have done so. But I do believe there ought to be some restrictions on where you can pack a gun. Schools, for example, ought to be off limits. And if a business owner doesn't want guns on the premises, the business ought to be able to ban them.
This private property issue is very big because presently many large businesses are likely in technical violation of the current law if, for example, they use metal detectors to screen employees and visitors and don't allow people with guns onto their premises.

National Center for Missing and Exploited Children
Friday, 7 March 2003 You may not know "Meet-Me Mack" or "Potty-Mouth Pete." But soon your children will meet these make-believe characters and learn from them about the very real dangers on the Internet. The animated characters are part of a state-of-the-art Internet safety curriculum that will be offered soon in Utah schools. The Netsmartz Workshop® has been available on the Internet at www.NetSmartz.org "Prosecuting online predators is only half the battle," said Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, whose office supervises the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC). "Our best chance of protecting Utah's children is to teach them how to avoid being a victim in the first place." The teaching materials are divided into different age groups. A cartoon character named "Clicky" tells five and six-year-olds to "never give out any of your personal information." Children between the ages of seven and 12 learn from the "WizzyWigs" about different Internet dangers. And older students will study real-life stories from teen victims. They'll also learn about other Internet topics like spamming, hacking, plagiarism, and piracy. "The classroom is an ideal setting for the NetSmartz Workshop because it educates and entertains. We are happy Utah has chosen to share the program with students of all ages," said Rick Minicucci, chief technology officer for NCMEC. "Computers are an integral part of our children's lives, and those who have used the NetSmartz Workshop report a positive change in their online behavior and increased awareness of the possible dangers.

Are Utah schools being overrun by tests? By Jennifer Toomer-Cook
Deseret News staff writer Chances are your public school student is spending up to two solid school days taking tests each year.
And, your tax dollars are paying part of what will be a $15 million annual bill for the exams.
Seem excessive?
Some school officials and legislators think so.
So on Tuesday, lawmakers on the education-enhancement task force decided to try to repeal some state-required tests.
They unanimously voted to seek legislation to do away with tests to diagnose reading problems for fourth-graders on up, and the written-answer part of the core curriculum tests. (Multiple-choice portions would remain.)
That last measure is expected to save more than $4 million alone and have no bearing on federal testing requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act.
The move was suggested by district testing directors and the Utah State Office of Education and spurred by a legislative audit on testing, also released Tuesday. Further changes could be in the works. document.write(Banner("area=dn.local.position1y/adsize=300x250",300,250))

The Creation of GSENM: A Case Study in the Politics of Land Use
Hiker on Metate Arch, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Photo © 1999 Ray Wheeler In many ways, the Grand Staircase-Escalante region is representative of the Colorado Plateau as a whole: a land at once fragile and resilient, valued by many for its economic potential in extractive industries, and by others as a place to be protected and enjoyed for its natural and aesthetic values. President Clinton's 1996 proclamation of this region as a national monument brought the contentious debate over Western wilderness to the forefront of the American agenda. In addition to the conflict between the pro-development and pro-environment camps, this region's historical politics have also been affected by a long-standing Western tradition of resistance to federal land control and interference. Since the late 19th century exodus of Mormons to the West and the struggle for Utah's statehood, tensions have run high between locals and the federal government. President Clinton's actions in September of 1996 helped draw the line between those for and those against protection of public lands, and the natural and cultural resources which they contain.
