Utah Schools Medal In Minimizing Maintenance Posted on: 02/27/2002 By Joanna Turpin As part of his initial evaluation of the district's equipment, energy manager Bill McLeod noticed that many of the 243 boilers in schools and related buildings were in some disrepair from age or a lack of maintenance. However, seeing a 84-year-old cast iron boiler in fine shape got him thinking about the next step. Granite School District in Salt Lake City is one of the largest school districts in the state. With 90 schools already in existence and more on the way, the district's engineering department is always looking for ways to trim the annual utility bill. When the energy management coordinator, Bill McLeod, came on board about 11 years ago, he was particularly interested in looking at how the mechanical systems might be retooled in order to save some money. During his examinations, he found that not enough attention or money was being applied to the systems' maintenance and repair, and many systems were not operating in peak condition. This was particularly true where the boilers were concerned. As it turned out, the existing firetube boilers needed a large amount of maintenance. Every year the district was shelling out between $50,000 and $100,000 for tube replacements, tube sheet repairs, and other boiler repairs. McLeod decided something needed to be done. In addition to wanting to save the money being spent on annual repairs, he wanted equipment that required less maintenance and was more efficient than the existing boilers.

With campuses in Ogden and Salt Lake City, the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind is the Educational Resource Center for children who are deaf, blind, or deafblind. The library provides services and a variety of materials to more than 950 students throughout Utah. Director of the Educational Resource Center Lorri Quigley and Librarians Mary Jo White and Janet Spilker provide information about deaf and blind children to parents, universities, and the general public. Their network reaches even further, as they are part of an organization of State Resource Centers of the U.S. Librarian Mary Jo White finds that Athena presents a user-friendly screen to her patrons. The large buttons and tabs are easier for the visually impaired children to see. The schools are also experimenting with speech synthesizers and other ways to make the computer even more accessible to their students. With the help of Athena Athena Webserver , and Athena WebLink , library functions are more convenient for deaf, blind, and deafblind students in Ogden, in Salt Lake City, and across Utah. Panelists fear Utah schools are on the brink of a crisis By Twila Van Leer
Deseret News staff writer Is Utah education in crisis? If not, it's on the brink, panelists for a Utah Farm Bureau Federation presentation said Thursday. The baby boom echo is making itself heard at a time when Utah's financial resources are stretched thin, they said.
"The obvious solution is to stop having children," said Flint Richards (father of 12, with tongue firmly in cheek) as he introduced the panel to a full audience attending the federation's convention in the Marriott Hotel. They included Steve Kroes of the Utah Foundation, Utah State University President Kermit Hall and Wes Quinton, who represents the federation on the Business Education Coalition, a group empaneled by Gov. Mike Leavitt to scrutinize education issues.
Utah faces "a challenge for the next 10 years," Kroes said. He cited the "Utah paradox." Utah taxpayers have the ninth-highest burden in the country but they generate the smallest per-pupil expenditure in the country when spread over the state's many children. On the horizon, he said, are increasing diversity with challenges of poverty and English-as-a-second-language, slow economic growth and higher expectations for education imposed by the Bush administration's "No Child Left Behind" program.

Utah Attorney General Argues Against University's Gun Ban
Email
Print Subscribe Most Emailed In a brief filed with the Utah Supreme Court, the Utah Attorney General's Office said that the University of Utah is defying the will of the legislature by banning guns on its campus despite a concealed-carry law, the Salt Lake Tribune reported May 19.
Assistant Attorney General Brent Burnett said that the Utah Constitution does not provide any right to academic freedom for the state's public colleges and universities.
The conflict arose in 2002, when the University of Utah filed a lawsuit to allow the continuation of its 30-year-old gun ban even though a state law limited the ability of public colleges to ban legally concealed weapons.
Third District Judge Robert Hilder ruled that the firearms ban was legal. The state appealed the decision to the Utah Supreme Court, but in the meantime, the state legislature passed a law that restated their authority to regulate guns on school campuses.
The appeal is proceeding on whether the Utah Constitution allows schools to create their own gun policies.
