Setting
Arches National Park is located on the Colorado Plateau of eastern Utah in the northeast corner of what is called Canyon Country. It runs about 15 miles north-to-south and about 10 miles east-to-west, encompassing 114 square miles ( 73,379 acres). The Colorado River creates the southern boundary of Arches National Park. On the opposite bank is the Moab Valley and the town of Moab. To the east, across the Colorado River, the La Sal Mountains rise to over 12,000 feet. The park is adjoined on the west by the Moab Canyon. Salt Valley runs through the park from northwest to southeast.
Climate
In summer, June through September, temperatures may exceed 100 degrees F; in winter, December through February, temperatures often drop below 32 degrees F. Temperatures may range 50 degrees in a 24-hour period. Dress accordingly. Very dry! Carry drinking water at all times.
Getting There
Transportation
Air
Major airlines fly into Salt Lake City, Utah (5 hours by car) or Grand Junction, Colorado (2 hours by car). A commuter airline, Alpine Air, flies into the Canyonlands Airport, 15 miles from the park, and into Salt Lake City.

Setting Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument extends from the town of Boulder in south-central Utah, along the foothills of the Boulder Mountains, 60 miles to the Arizona border and the town of Big Water on U.S. 89. At its widest point, it is nearly 90 miles from Capitol Reef on the northeast boundary to Johnson Canyon near Kanab on the southwest edge. The Monument encompasses the Grand Staircase in its western portion, the Kaiparowits Plateau in the eastern ,with the Canyons of the Escalante sandwiched between. Much of the Escalante River and many of its side canyons are already within the Glen Canyon NRA, so virtually the entire stream is now set aside. There are about 2,656 square miles in the Monument, equivalent to a square 52 miles long by 52 miles wide. The monument is 900,000 acres larger than the total acreage of Utah's five existing national parks. It contains more land than all of the national parks in Utah, Colorado, Nevada and Wyoming (except Yellowstone) combined. The monument abuts the Glen Canyon National Recreation area (1,236,880 acres) on the east and south, and Capitol Reef National Park (241,904 acres) on the northeast and Bryce Canyon National Park (35,835 acres) along the western edge.

  • The National Map featured in Geospatial Solutions June 2004 Issue June 2004
Geospatial Solutions The National Map : Open for Business by Carl Reed. This feature article describes how The National Map is being built through a network of partnerships using open standards such as the OpenGis Consortium (OGC) Web Mapping Service interface. Ken Boyko, System Design Chair for The National Map , is quoted in the article and states that "We'll know we've ultimately been successful when agencies and GIS users begin to write their own applications tapping into the various services we provide." The National Map 's first partner, the State of Delaware, shows how its Data and Mapping Integration Laboratory ( DataMIL ) offers 19 publicly available GIS-based Web services using OGC Web Mapping Services, one of which is dedicated to The National Map and includes all statewide base-layer data.

Abbreviation:
UT Mormons, members of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, make up a large percentage of the population of Utah. Utah became the 45th state of the Union in 1896. The golden spike completing the first transcontinental railroad line was driven at Promontory, Utah, in 1869, leading to a further influx of settlers. Utah is well-known for its snow-covered mountains and beautifully colored canyons. The wind and rain have formed rocks into many arches and natural bridges. The Great Salt Lake is the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River; its waters are saltier than ocean water. The state's forests, mountains, lakes, and rivers are excellent for boating, fishing, hunting, sightseeing, skiing and swimming. One of Utah's most interesting places to visit is Mormon Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Bundesstaat. Der goldene Schienennagel, mit dem die erste transkontinentale Eisenbahnlinie beendet wurde, wurde in Promontory, Utah, eingeschlagen. Dies führte zu weiteren Einwanderungen.
