    Policy No: 31
    Approved: 4/26/96
    Revised: 3/16/00
    Revised: 2/01/02
5-31 LIBRARY 31.1 It is the official policy of the College to concentrate its library resources and services in the central library to maintain the quality and integrity of the central library, prevent unnecessary duplication of library materials, and decentralization of library services. 31.2 The establishment of independent libraries for departments is discouraged. Exceptions can be made only by approval of the president and only after they have been reviewed by the director of the library, the Faculty Library Committee, Academic Council, and College Council. 31.3 The function of the Browning Library is to provide students and faculty with sufficient information and materials (both print and electronic format) to support the curriculum of the college; to provide professional reference service to assist the students with their research and information needs; and to provide an environment conducive to study. A secondary function is to provide general information, recreational reading, and sufficient depth and richness of materials insofar as it does not deprive students of needed tools to succeed in their academic pursuits.

2002 Olympics Columnists - Mullen ... Religion Safire offers surefire praise for new library
Pulitzer-prize winning columnist William Safire talks about the use of language in local newspapers during his lecture at the Salt Lake City Library on Saturday. (Jeremy Harmon/The Salt Lake Tribune) By Christy Karras
The Salt Lake Tribune
It would be difficult to hold a conversation with William Safire. The New York Times columnist and author of a pile of books on language can't help but examine everything he hears and sees, ceaselessly noting usage, pronunciation and etymology of nearly every word.
If he criticizes his friends' speech at the rate he criticizes speech and writing in general, it may be a wonder if he has any friends left and that doesn't even begin to address his political views, often most kindly described as contrarian.
Safire spoke Saturday as part of the new Salt Lake City Library's Dewey lecture series, which brings noted guests in a variety of fields to the new library building's auditorium.

Conference Scheduled for May
We are looking forward to seeing Utah librarians next month at the Utah Library Association Annual Conference. This year's annual conference is scheduled for May 13-14 at the new Sharwan Smith Conference Center at Southern Utah University in Cedar City. BCR Executive Director Dave Brunell will attend and will host the "BCR Network Update" Thursday, May 13, from 2:30-3:45 p.m. Please put that time slot on your schedule. You will learn about OCLC's New FirstSearch, hear the latest news about SilverPlatter and other reference services; learn what's new on the Internet and World Wide Web; and find out what new hardware and software may be of interest to libraries. Stop by and check out BCR's booth in the exhibit area, too. Pick up information on how BCR can help your library provide services at affordable prices and chat with BCR's representatives who will provide answers to all of your questions.

The award is presented annually for noteworthy service by a library support staff member. Ms. Tate has made significant contributions to the continuing growth and development of library support staff around the country through active involvement on both the local and national levels. She represented paraprofessionals on the University of Richmond's Staff Association Council and served as the organization's first chair. She was active in the formative years of the Virginia Library Association Paraprofessional Forum (VLAPF), serving as chair and board member. She was also elected as the Virginia Library Association State Representative to the Southeastern Library Association (SELA). It was during this time, in conjunction with colleagues, she assisted with the development of a proposal for a paraprofessional round table within the Southeastern Library Association. Carolyn served as its first Round Table chair.
