Approximately 75% of state’s population. Utah Education Network (UEN) UEN is a consortium of education, government, and business organizations, serving the educational needs of 475,000 Utah students through an advanced fiber-optic backbone. The publicly funded network connects public schools and universities, as well as applied technology centers. In 1994, Qwest formed an anchor tenant partnership with Utah to construct a fiber-optic based Wide Area Network (WAN). Working with Qwest engineers, UEN was then able to launch several education technology programs: EDNET, UtahLINK and Utah Electronic High School. In FY2003, $14,987,300 was allocated for UEN and its component programs, which include: EDNET - The state’s largest videoconferencing system with over two hundred locations, it connects high schools, universities, colleges, and technology centers. The program, which began in 1983, offers a core curriculum to all high school students. In addition, it offers limited college and university courses, teacher recertification courses, etc. UtahLINK - Implemented in 1993, it connects 790+ elementary, middle, alternative, and secondary schools to the Internet. Benefits of the program include services such as parental access to student records, free Internet connectivity to individual public schools, access to the Utah Electronic High School for rural and remote students and online access to sample lesson plans for teachers and administrators. Along with the state, the program formed a contract with Qwest Communications to become the anchor tenant of a fiber-optic backbone connecting northern and southern Utah. The network uses the state’s nine public colleges and universities as hubs along the backbone.

Executive Summary SWE and other engineering students have developed projects to address the learning objectives of the Utah K-12 Science Core Curriculum. They developed the projects, worked with teachers to optimize the age-appropriate learning (incorporating mathematics principles, working in groups, etc.), and "tested them out" in actual classrooms. Materials have been made available over the internet to Utah (and other) teachers, SWE members who wish to be involved in outreach activities, scout leaders, etc., and a lending library of equipment for local teachers is available through SWE. This program provided opportunities for SWE student leadership, team building, and mentoring, for educational enhancement of K-12 students, and for increased visibility of the Society of Women Engineers in Utah. This project will be done in conjunction with the Summit Elementary School in Smithfield, Utah, the Junior Engineering State program at Utah State University, and the Discovery Center (children's science museum) at Utah State University.

Executive Summary The objective of this project was to expand the SWE collection of hands on science and math learning modules for Grades 1, 2, and 4, following the Utah Science Core Topics Modules to allow classroom teachers to effectively meet their teaching recommendations in addition to our visits to the classrooms. Through active participation with Junior Engineering (USU’s mobile science program), we have expanded our offerings as well as theirs. SWE volunteers visited seven K-12 schools in Cache Valley and one in Southern California with these modules and those developed in 1999-2000, providing over 1500 contact hours for nearly 700 children, about 2/3 of them girls and/or ethnic minorities. We expanded our teacher lending resource library of all equipment used in our outreach program and collaborated with Junior Engineering in the delivery of science projects to schools in need. Our final project for the school year, a Girl Scout Engineering Day, was a tremendous success, among our most fun projects so far and certain to be repeated in following years.

The Consortium for School Networking Publishes ‘Emerging Technologies Report: A Guide to Wireless LANs in K-12 Schools’ In-depth report examines the implementation of wireless LAN technologies in K-12 schools Washington, DC. (Nov. 4, 2003) – The Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), a national nonprofit organization that promotes the use of information technologies and the Internet in K-12 education, today introduced Emerging Technologies Report: A Guide to Wireless LANs in K-12 Schools. “Wireless local area networks have been around for some time, but only recently have the costs and benefits met at the magical point that propels a new technology into the mainstream,” the report notes. “New standards, faster speeds and decreasing costs are combining to make wireless networking an ever-more appealing solution for school campus connectivity needs.” The report, from CoSN’s Emerging Technologies Committee, examines the implementation of wireless LAN technologies in K-12 schools and identifies challenges, options, and lessons learned. Critical issues addressed in the report include standards and compatibility, planning and implementation, security, and total cost of ownership (TCO).

When you find an opportunity that appears to match your project goals, be sure to follow the links to the funder's site for more information.
Remember, it is critical that your project matches the funder's guidelines. You will waste both your time and the grant-maker's if you submit a proposal that does not match the grantor's funding initiatives. The SchoolGrants focus is primarily schools within the United States. There are, however, often opportunities available that extend to our Canadian neighbors. Most of such opportunities are found on the Nationwide Opportunities pages.

Utah Education Network
Utah Education Network Overview As a consortium of education, government, and business organizations, the Utah Education Network (UEN) serves the online educational needs of 475,000 Utah students. The Network connects 797 public schools, nine universities, and four applied technology centers. UEN, a publicly funded education service, faced the challenge of educating Utah's growing student population using advanced communications. Working closely with a team of Qwest engineers, UEN developed three cutting-edge technology programs: UtahLINK, the Utah Electronic High School, and EDNET. All in all, the Qwest/UEN partnership helped educated almost half a million Utah students from all over the state. Background In 1994, Qwest formed an "anchor tenant" partnership with the state of Utah to construct a fiber-optic-based wide area network (WAN) to support UEN activities. The network provided every student in Utah, regardless of their location, the technology needed to access the advanced technologies including the Internet and videoconferencing.
