From: Paul R. Larson larson@edu-suu-scf.sc.suu.edu
Subject: geomorphology as a field of study
I have a question for everyone. What do you say to the geologists who claim that there is no longer a need for the study of geomorphology, that it is nothing more than physical geology? Our school is in the process of a semester conversion, and the geomorphology course was a casulty of the process. Geology dropped it, but I was successful in adding it to the geography curriculum. There seems to be no small degree of antipathy toward the subject among the geologists here on campus. So, I wondered how others have handled the question. Thanks, Paul R. Larson Paul R. Utah County is located in north-central Utah, 44 miles south of Salt Lake City, at the foot of the Wasatch Mountain range. Part of the larger three-county region known as "Mountainland," Utah County is a series of mountains and valleys. From the Wasatch Mountains on the east, the terrain levels into Utah Valley, where the majority of the county's cities can be found. Utah Lake, the largest natural fresh water lake in the State, lies in the western portion of Utah Valley at the foot of the Lake Mountains. The Oquirrh Mountains form the extreme western border of the County.
The average elevation in the valley ranges between 4,300 to 4,700 feet above sea level. Elevations in the mountains can reach up to 11,000 feet above sea level.

The Salt Lake Tribune
Traditional archaeologists may scoff, but it is this theory that has brought ever-increasing numbers of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the rich archaeological lands of the Mayas, a sophisticated and polytheistic civilization that thrived in Central America as early as 1500 B.C.
"At first, we saw maybe one [LDS] group a year," said Julio Ortiz, president of the tourism committee of Tikal, the ancient park of ruins visited annually by more than 400,000 international tourists. "Now, there's more than 20 [LDS groups] coming through each year."
That amounts to a little more than a couple thousand Mormons visiting the sites annually, he estimated.

Utah - Geography Rocky Mt. state of the W United States. It is bordered by Idaho and Wyoming (N), Colorado (E), Arizona (S), and Nevada (W). Utah has two dissimilar regions sharply divided by the Wasatch Range (part of the Rocky Mts.), which runs generally south from the Idaho border. To the east of the Wasatch rise high mountains and irregular plateaus; along its western foothills lie the major cities of Utah, while further west is the Great Basin. In the northeast the snow-capped Uinta Mts. reach the state's highest elevation in Kings Peak (13,528 ft/4,123 m). The dissected Colorado Plateau stretches southward, rugged and largely uninhabitable except in isolated river valleys. Deep, tortuous canyons cut by the Colorado River and its tributaries impede travel but create vistas of remarkable grandeur. Western Utah, part of the Great Basin, was once submerged beneath an extensive Pleistocene lake, Lake Bonneville. For many thousands of years water level in the lake fluctuated, finally subsiding entirely to leave behind a salt-strewn desert, wide expanses of arid but nonalkaline soil, and a series of lakes. Great Salt Lake, the largest of these, has through evaporation reached a concentration of mineral salts several times that of the ocean. Gulls, pelicans, and blue herons are found around the lake and have rookeries on its islands. Much of the lake shore is bordered by mud and salt flats. The haze-covered Oquirrh Mts., rising south of the lake, dip to form pleasant beaches at the water's edge, then emerge as islands within the lake and rise again in the Promontory Mts. on the northern lake shore.

3 Different Maps of Salt Lake City, Utah
Shaded Relief Map
You could use the shaded relief map to find the locations of cities and towns. But, most important, it shows the shape of the landmountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes. Using the legend for this map, you can also find out which towns are the largest and which are the smallest.
Road Map
Road maps show people how they can travel from one place to another. They show some physical features, such as mountains and rivers, and political features, such as cities and towns. A road map also shows you which are the local roads and which are the main highways.
Topographic Map
This topographic map shows a small area of Salt Lake City. Topographic maps use contour lines to show elevation (height above sea level). Contour lines join points of equal elevation above a specified reference, such as sea level. Think of a contour line as an imaginary line on the ground that takes any path necessary to maintain constant elevation. Using the legend for this map, you can locate schools and churches. People frequently use topographic maps when hiking. Builders use topographic maps to figure out where to put buildings and roads. There's a topographic map like this for every part of the United States, including one for where you live. Maps and text adapted from teacher packet ``What Do Maps Show?''
