Encyclopedia
Utah, state, United States
Geography
Utah has two dissimilar regions sharply divided by the Wasatch Range (part of the Rocky Mts.), which runs generally south from the Idaho border. To the east of the Wasatch rise high mountains and irregular plateaus; along its western foothills lie the major cities of Utah, while farther west is the Great Basin. In the northeast the snowcapped Uinta Mts. reach the state's highest elevation in Kings Peak (13,528 ft/4,123 m). The dissected Colorado Plateau stretches southward, rugged and largely uninhabitable except in isolated river valleys. Deep, tortuous canyons cut by the Colorado River and its tributaries impede travel but create vistas of remarkable grandeur. Western Utah, part of the Great Basin, was once submerged beneath an extensive Pleistocene lake, Lake Bonneville. For many thousands of years the water level in the lake fluctuated, finally subsiding entirely to leave behind a salt-strewn desert, wide expanses of arid but nonalkaline soil, and a series of lakes. Great Salt Lake , the largest of these, has through evaporation reached a concentration of mineral salts several times that of the ocean. Gulls, pelicans, and blue herons are found around the lake and on its islands. Much of the lake shore is bordered by mud and salt flats. The haze-covered Oquirrh Mts., rising south of the lake, dip to form pleasant beaches at the water's edge, then emerge as islands within the lake and rise again in the Promontory Mts. on the northern shore.

about utah s license plates and motorist laws, and if you read deeper, you may evendiscover some tidbits regarding the state s history and geography and some
http://members.aol.com/utahhwys/
This site is your official unofficial source of information on roads and highways in Utah. Here you'll find information on the various numbered state routes, including lengths and history, exit lists for all of the freeways, photos of Utah signage and other highway related information from the Beehive State. You'll also find information about Utah's license plates and motorist laws, and if you read deeper, you may even discover some tidbits regarding the state's history and geography and some other quirky facts!
Why a Site About Roads?
I have always been interested by roads. By itself, a road is nothing more than a line of pavement. But in context, it's much more than that: the line of pavement leads somewhere, and it is connected to other lines of pavements that also lead to more places. Driving along that line of pavement are vehicles, some of them occupied by people who are my neighbors, and others occupied by people from other places - - perhaps even from across the country or from another country. To some people, all interstates look the same: homogenized twin-ribbons of asphalt punctuated with the same fueling stations and fast food chains at every junction. But I see differences in every state in which I travel. Differences in signing practices, in bridge architecture, and differences in interchange designs. Of our current highways, some were built brand new, on new alignments, while others are the result of several modifications and upgrades to an older highway and they leave a record of those changes for anyone willing to examine and interpret it.

Technology Aids Geography
By J. Aaron Goldsmith Published: Friday, November 22, 2002 The information technology age is advancing research in the field of geography.
Students and faculty in the geography department gathered on Wednesday for an open house to discuss new technology, their research and to celebrate Geography Awareness Week.
The open house showcased various research projects of the department's students and faculty.
Wednesday was also National Geographic Science day, so many of the projects exhibited applications of this technology.
Geographic information science uses new technology such as global positioning systems and remote sensing to create computer generated maps.
"We don't use paper maps as much anymore…all the map data goes directly into the computer," said Harvey Miller, professor of geography at the U.
The presentations at the event dealt with topics such as global warming in the arctic, environmental distress syndrome and using remote sensing to document wildfires.

    Setting
Bryce Canyon National Park is about 80 miles northeast of Zion National Park but is starkly different in climate, topography, geology and scenery. Bryce sits atop the Paunsagunt Plateau of southwestern Utah between the Markagunt Plateau to the west and Aquarius Plateau to the east. At its widest point, it is about 5 miles east to west and runs 20 miles north to south. Instead of looking up at sandstone formations as at Zion, one is looking down along the Paunsagunt Fault onto much different geological features, primarily hoodoos, formed from the erosional action on shales and sandstone of the Claron formation.
    Climate
At 8,000 feet where the visitor center is located, it is 1,000 feet higher than Zion, with a cooler, moister climate. Much of the area's precipitation comes as afternoon thundershowers during mid to late summer. Spring and fall weather is variable. Cold winter days are offset by high altitude sun and dry climate. Winter nights are sub-freezing. During some winters, Alaskan cold fronts descend on the Colorado Plateau bringing temperatures as low as 30 degrees below zero. The area can have significant snow October through March; annual snowfall averages 100 inches.
The high altitude sun can burn in any season. Hats, long sleeves and sunscreen are recommended all year.

Setting Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument extends from the town of Boulder in south-central Utah, along the foothills of the Boulder Mountains, 60 miles to the Arizona border and the town of Big Water on U.S. 89. At its widest point, it is nearly 90 miles from Capitol Reef on the northeast boundary to Johnson Canyon near Kanab on the southwest edge. The Monument encompasses the Grand Staircase in its western portion, the Kaiparowits Plateau in the eastern ,with the Canyons of the Escalante sandwiched between. Much of the Escalante River and many of its side canyons are already within the Glen Canyon NRA, so virtually the entire stream is now set aside. There are about 2,656 square miles in the Monument, equivalent to a square 52 miles long by 52 miles wide. The monument is 900,000 acres larger than the total acreage of Utah's five existing national parks. It contains more land than all of the national parks in Utah, Colorado, Nevada and Wyoming (except Yellowstone) combined. The monument abuts the Glen Canyon National Recreation area (1,236,880 acres) on the east and south, and Capitol Reef National Park (241,904 acres) on the northeast and Bryce Canyon National Park (35,835 acres) along the western edge.

    Summary of Project
This project is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the State of Utah Automated Geographic Reference Center (AGRC) to test The National Map concept for supporting critical transportation data needed in emergency response, census requirements, and other Federal, State, and local governmental functions for an urban county and a rural county in the State. It will demonstrate the utility and ability of The National Map to meet a real, critical need in preventing or reducing loss of life and property damage related to emergency response. Project objectives were to develop and integrate transportation datasets, develop and test a process for updating and maintaining transportation data, and develop and test software for interfacing and serving transportation information over the Web, including the development of derivative products and capabilities. This project will directly benefit Utah by encouraging the use of locally generated data that are the best available, fostering improvements in the accuracy of census data, and providing a model that relies on increased coordination between Federal, State, and local agencies. Additionally, the U.S. Census Bureau will use this up-to-date transportation dataset as part of its modernization program in preparation for the 2010 census.
    Project Data Description
This project focused on compiling and integrating 1:24,000-scale transportation data for one urban county and one rural county in Utah. The collection of data for this project was limited to those datasets that either already existed or would become available during the project's time frame. Collection of new data was limited to those efforts that were underway by local entities through grants received and administered by the Utah AGRC.

    What is Geography?
Geography, at the start of the new century, is a comparatively small but lively and challenging academic discipline providing a distinctive approach to many of today's societal problems and issues: economic and social inequality; cost and quality of health care delivery systems, urban and suburban growth; efficient transport systems, patterns of food supply and hunger, health and disease, education and child labor; environmental and pollution problems; economic impacts of natural catastrophies (floods, earthquakes), appropriate utilization of water and energy resources; local and locational repercussions of new communications technologies; the activities and behaviors of transnational corporations; and many more.
The Geography Department has over the years developed a strong emphasis on Economic and Business Geography. [See also:

    Shaded Relief Map
You could use the shaded relief map to find the locations of cities and towns. But, most important, it shows the shape of the landmountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes. Using the legend for this map, you can also find out which towns are the largest and which are the smallest.
    Road Map
Road maps show people how they can travel from one place to another. They show some physical features, such as mountains and rivers, and political features, such as cities and towns. A road map also shows you which are the local roads and which are the main highways.
    Topographic Map
This topographic map shows a small area of Salt Lake City. Topographic maps use contour lines to show elevation (height above sea level). Contour lines join points of equal elevation above a specified reference, such as sea level. Think of a contour line as an imaginary line on the ground that takes any path necessary to maintain constant elevation. Using the legend for this map, you can locate schools and churches. People frequently use topographic maps when hiking. Builders use topographic maps to figure out where to put buildings and roads. There's a topographic map like this for every part of the United States, including one for where you live.
