This page offers all kinds of links on the subject of Utah wilderness. As a matter of fact, this page is an attempt to collect and categorize almost everything on the Internet dealing with Utah wilderness. This seemingly impossible task will be greatly facilitated with your help! If you have additional links or comments, send them to: comments
    How to use this page
This collection of links is arranged into categories, and the categories are arranged alphabetically. Topics within categories are arranged alphabetically, unless noted otherwise. The intent of this list is to offer the Utah wilderness advocate a set of references and links as a starting point. The advantage of using this page as opposed to a search engine is that (presumably) the references are categorized, as well as filtered for content. In a few cases, references are duplicated because they fall within several different categories.
This collection began as research, and evolved into its present form. It is still evolving. I plan keep this list as current as possible, but make no warranties as to the validity of the links, or the contents of pages that are linked to. Happy surfing!

Clark County School District One major criticism of the current state of education in the United States is that American students are ignorant of geography. In the past few years, however, a serious commitment has been made by National Geographic Society and Teachers to educate our students in the science of our planet. The National Geographic Society (NGS) and the National Council for Geographic Education have been working diligently in the past decade to enable our students to compete internationally in the area of geography. In 1984, GUIDELINES IN GEOGRAPHIC EDUCATION: FIVE THEMES, was published. The National Geographic Society (NGS), under the leadership of Gil Grovsner, founded the Geographic Education Program in 1985. This program marked the beginning of the NGS Alliance Network, a consortium of educational programs which was to be established in each state. As of 1994, all 50 states as well as Puerto Rico and Canada were members of the Alliance Network, working particularly with the unit known as the Geography Alliance. These state alliances are key players in the geography movement; their goal is to train educators to successfully teach geography. Each year, workshops and conferences and Alliance Summer Geography Institutes are held throughout the United States. The State Alliances have expanded K-12 teacher geographic and environmental horizons. The NGS 1994 WORKSHOP ON WILDERNESS, held in Portland, Oregon, drew 104 participants nationwide who had the unique opportunity to visit several wilderness areas. This experience provided an abundance of educational information, which, it was hoped, would be shared with fellow teachers. The Workshop was specifically designed to train the teachers to implement a plan in each state to promote Geography Awareness Week. The theme was "Keeping an Eye on the Wilderness."

Most maps in the Stewart Library's Map Collection are published by the United States government and are distributed to Weber through the University's participation in the U.S. Depository Library Program. Almost all maps of the United States in the Map Collection are produced by or in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey. Maps are located in the Reference Department on the first floor - North.
    Topographic Maps
Topographic maps of the United States are arranged alphabetically by State and by Quadrangle name. Each quadrangle is named according to a prominent geographic feature. To the west the Great Basin extends to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California The Great Salt Lake has no outlet because it is at the bottom of a basin of interior drainage. The result is a terminal lake Fresh water entering from the Bear, Jordan, and Weber river drainage systems can only exit by evaporation or by seepage into deep groundwater layers. Current climate conditions of high evaporation and a low input of fresh water from streams results in a saline lake If you look carefully at any topographic map you should be able to pick out the various lakeshore levels or stands of the ancient fresh water Lake Bonneville -which was found here during glacial times. The most important stands are the Provo, Bonneville, Stansbury, and Gilbert standssee chart below:

This spectacular cliff-and-canyon landscape and wilderness is full of the unexpected, including the astonishing span of Kolob Arch, the world's longest at 310 feet. Zion is a showcase of geology. Geologic processes have played a very visible role in shaping the terrain here, where an arid climate and sparse vegetation allow the exposure of large expanses of bare rock and thus reveal geologic history in a way not possible in wetter lands clothed in vegetation. Mule deer, golden eagles, mountain lions and many other desert-adapted species inhabit the 229 square miles of Zion.

    http://www.cc.utah.edu/~joseph/geography/PaulBunyanWoodPile.html
    Paul Bunyan's Wood Pile
Paul Bunyan's Woodpile is a geological formation that resembles several large piles of cut wood. It is actually a volcanic formation of basalt that fit together roughly as hexagonal columns running horizontally.
Photo from Frank Beckwith, "Millard and Nearby", p. 128, Printed by Art City Publishing Company, Springvile, Utah, 1947. The site is roughly 83 miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah. The most direct way to get there is to go to Redwood Road (Utah highway 68) which is 1700 West running through the entire Salt Lake Valley. Travel south on Redwood Road into Utah County, past Camp Williams, west of Utah Lake, until you get to the town of Elberta. Then turn right (west) on U.S. Highway 6 and follow the road through Eureka and south as the road turns towards Delta, Utah. The turn off to Paul Bunyan's Wood Pile will be a little before the mile marker 125. The Woodpile is on the top of a hill near Jericho, Utah (Jericho is uninhabited, just an old railroad stop). The access road is dirt, often heavily rutted, and at times impassible, particularly when the soil is wet, except for four-wheeled drive vehicles. There is a road sign for Paul Bunyan's Wood Pile along U.S. Highway route 6, about 3.2 miles north of the turnoff to the Jericho Sand Dunes (Jericho road), or 14.8 miles south of Eureka Utah. The access road winds east and northeast for about 3.2 miles until you reach a fenced area near a spring (Riley Springs on the map).On the map, the black lined squares represent 1 mile square. This map is from the BLM map for Lynndyl Utah.

    PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY OF UTAH
The Green and Colorado rivers of the Colorado Plateau
    Location
Centrally located in the Intermountain West, Utah is bordered by all of the mountain states except Montana and is often called the "Crossroads of the West."
The state's centrality is important to the prosperity of the Wasatch Front, Utah's core area, and particularly to the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The term "Salt Lake Empire" refers to the large geographical area that comes under considerable economic and/or religious influence from Salt Lake. The empire penetrates significantly into Idaho, Wyoming, and Nevada, somewhat in Arizona, and is not of much consequence in either New Mexico or Colorado.
    Size
At 84,916 square miles or 54,340,240 acres, Utah is the thirteenth largest state in the United States. Approximately three percent of the surface is covered by water.
    Landform
Rising to 13,528 feet, Kings Peak is the highest spot in Utah, and Beaver Dam Wash in the southwestern corner of the state is the lowest point at 2,350 feet. Only the Uinta Mountains have peaks that exceed 13,000 feet, and there are twenty-four of them that do. Three other mountains systems have peaks that exceed 12,000 feetthe La Sal, Tushar, and Deep Creek Mountains. The highest peak in the Wasatch Mountains, Mount Nebo, is 11,877 feet.
Utah's landform is divided among three major physiographic provinces: the Great Basin or Basin and Range province, the Colorado Plateau province, and the Rocky Mountain province.
