Juab School District Board of Education recently adopted a new method of teacher evaluation and the first groups of teachers had completed their evaluations. "The evaluations turned out to be a positive experience," said Kirk Wright, superintendent. "The new approach, a team approach, emphasizes coaching as the key element." He said the new evaluation procedure is about standards and there can be no standards without assessments matched to those standards. Teachers cannot improve teaching unless they know how well students are learning as measured against meaningful learning outcomes or results. "Every three years an administrative team will evaluate the work of each individual, tenured teacher in the district on the Juab School District Teaching Rubric," said Wright.

National Board Certification
Utah signed the 2000-2005 NASDTEC Interstate Contract and awards their highest level certificate to any person who has obtained National Board Certification in an area corresponding to that for which certification is sought, provided the applicant also holds a comparable and valid certificate issued by any member state and has complied with any requirements of the receiving state regarding degrees held, citizenship, and moral, ethical, physical, and mental fitness.
  • National Board Certification is a demonstration of a candidate's teaching practice as measured against high and rigorous standards, and a means to professional growth and improvement. Candidates describe the process as a way to deepen subject matter knowledge and become more skillful in daily classroom instruction and student assessment. The ultimate result is improved student learning. Candidates achieve National Board Certification if they meet or exceed NBPTS standards by demonstrating their knowledge through portfolio entries and assessment center exercises. There are currently fifty four National Board Certified Teachers in Utah. Contact the NBPTS website for more information

Admissions Issues The Coming Boom in Utah's School Age and College Age Populations: State and County Scenarios Immigration to the U.S. in the 1990s has been of historic proportions. Utah, which has been relatively unaffected by major migrations of people of color in the past, has become the destination for many of these recent migrants (particularly Hispanics), resulting in a significant increase in its diversity. The growth of Utah's minority and foreign-born populations is expected to continue. Given the impending and substantial increases in the state's school age population, educators face the double challenge of much larger and more diverse student populations.
