    Parley's plan for Utah
In a Parley Hellewell administration, Kids Come First
That's no empty slogan, the kind that insincere politicians often adopt in order to appear generous with other people's money. Our children must come first, Parley
believes, if our state is to have any kind of meaningful future.

Parley is running for Governor to provide a secure future for Utah's children -through making sure that state government is grounded in wise principles and practices. To do so, he has a twelve-point plan involving:
  • Education
  • Family
  • Freedom
  • Taxes ... Next 1. EDUCATION Restore choice, personal responsibility, and sensible curriculum to Utah education. ducation has always been fundamentally a family affair. Parents have the God-given right to choose the kind of education their children receive -from among public, private, and home-based alternatives -and they also have a responsibility to lead out in teaching their children. Children themselves are responsible for their own learning, from among the opportunities they encounter at home, at school, at church, in the community. With that common-sense foundation, families should assume the primary role in the education of their children, and not rely on government to bear the primary burden, no matter where a child attends school.

    Getting Started on the Web
To help you get your University website up and running, here is a checklist of things to do and things to know. Learn about your organization's resources
    • The help you need may already be available from the network administrators and computer professionals in your department. Your department may also have special rules or policies regarding where and how to manage your website. Building a positive relationship with your IT support staff should be your first step in getting started on the web.
Finding a home for your website
    • Every website lives on a host called a web server. These machines make your website's files available to the browsers of all the web surfers on the information super-highway. There are numerous web servers on campus; choosing the website hosting that is best for you should be an informed decision. The Office of Information Technology network group manages several host machines, and many colleges and departments administer their own servers. For information about OIT network hosting, contact

    TRAFFIC REGULATIONS
The State of Utah and local towns have laws regulating ATV use. These laws are intended to provide for the orderly and safe use of ATV's while protecting people, property, and the environment. Please follow them so the privilege of ATVing will not be revoked by the State or the Federal agencies primarily responsible for managing the Paiute ATV Trail. Before you arrive you need to know that ATV's owned by residents of Utah must be registered yearly with the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation. Residents of other states may keep their ATV's in Utah for 14 days without registering them, so long as the ATV's are properly licensed or registered in the home state. You may operate your ATV on public lands or roads that are either signed or otherwise designated as open by the managing agency. The Fishlake National Forest publishes a travel map which designates Forest areas that are open, restricted, or closed to motorized travel. Copies of the most recent edition of this map can be obtained from the Forest at the address listed below. For private land, you must obtain the owner's permission before leaving any right-of-way.

    Black Issues in Higher Education
    Sept 12, 2002
SALT LAKE CITY Three members of a legislative committee have accused the University of Utah of favoring women and minority applicants to its medical school despite legislative opposition to the practice. "You deny using quotas. But it seems there's a real commitment to ratios," said Rep. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem, referring to a January legislative audit that found women and minority applicants are accepted by the state's only medical school at twice the rate of their White male counterparts. Backed by Rep. Katherine Bryson, R-Orem, and Sen. Bill Hickman, R-St. George, Dayton reprimanded the medical school and asked lawmakers to address a diversity policy recently drafted by the state board of regents. She contends it conflicts with the state's nondiscrimination policy.

    Mike Leavitt By Christopher Smith
    The Salt Lake Tribune
WASHINGTON Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Mike Leavitt is trying to mitigate political damage from revelations that EPA scientists were muzzled as utility lobbyists and White House appointees wrote a new regulation for toxic mercury emitted by coal-fired power plants.
The controversy the first big political challege for the former Utah governor since he became head of the EPA in November tests his skills in negotiating the political labyrinth of industry and the business-friendly White House, EPA employees, watchdog environmental groups and members of Congress critical of President Bush's environmental policies.
The New York Times and Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday that Leavitt now is considering strengthening the new mercury regulation he announced in December and wants additional staff analysis amid questions about the unusual development of the rule.
