Public Forum Utah Politics Online Poll ... Religion School Daze
Just because summer vacation has emptied many of the public schools doesn't mean parents have stopped worrying about what will or won't happen when their children return to the classroom in a couple of months.
Many parents were paying close attention last winter as the Utah Legislature entertained numerous proposals for improving the state's public education system. But lawmakers declined, even in a non-election year, to make the politically difficult choice to raise enough money to pay for improvements.
While the lawmakers were understandably skeptical of raising the general state income tax during a recession, they were equally skeptical, and unwilling, to end Utah's antiquated tax exemption for dependent children. Many large families in this state with the nation's highest birth rate were similarly adverse to losing those exemptions.
Yet, chances are good that many parents of those same families were among the 78 percent who responded "yes" when asked recently in a Salt Lake Tribune poll whether more tax money should go to Utah's education system. The question that needs to be asked, and wasn't in the survey, is whether Utahns are willing to pay more in taxes to make that possible.

Interview with Andrew Paul Markwick, from England
Andrew Paul Markwick is completing his two-year degree in General Education at the College of Eastern Utah , located in Price, Utah. Andrew Paul Markwick Why did you decide to study in the U.S.A.?
I wanted to travel and decided to move to the States to complete my education. How did you choose your college?
I came here because the expenses were very affordable. Also the people here were very helpful when I first contacted them and have continued to help me now that I am enrolled in school here. What do you like best?
I feel that it is very friendly here and I have gotten to know many people. Everyone talks to you and it is easy to make friends. In general, I find that people are more friendly here than they are back home. What do you miss most?
I miss my family and friends back in England. And now that I live in Utah, the ocean is one of the things that I miss most.

Through strategic litigation, communications, training and outreach, the Institute for Justice advances a rule of law under which individuals can control their own destinies as free and responsible members of society. We litigate to secure economic liberty, school choice, private property rights, freedom of speech and other vital individual liberties, and to restore constitutional limits on the power of government. Through these activities we challenge the ideology of the welfare state and illustrate and extend the benefits of freedom to those whose full enjoyment of liberty is denied by government. News and Announcements:
Free Fishing Day is June 12
Fishing waters throughout Utah should see plenty of anglers Saturday, June 12, as the Division of Wildlife Resources marks Free Fishing Day in Utah. People will not need a fishing license to fish in the state that day. All other regulations found in the 2004 Utah Fishing Proclamation will be in effect. "We're trying to attract people to fishing by having a free day," says Tom Pettengill, sport fisheries coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. DWR staff treat Free Fishing Day as they would a holiday weekend, stocking additional fish to meet the additional demand. Pettengill says anglers fishing June 12 may want to focus their efforts on lakes and reservoirs. That's where most of the fish stocked for Free Fishing Day will be placed. Pettengill reminds those fishing June 12 that while no license is required, all other limits and regulations found in the 2004 Utah Fishing Proclamation will be in effect. Anglers, especially those who might be fishing for the first time, are encouraged to pick up a copy of the proclamation and learn the rules.
