Permits For Cash: A Fair and Equitable Resolution to the Public Land Range War - 2

An excessive adherence to principled opposition to an injustice
often interferes with ending the injustice. Andy Kerr Home Page Topic Areas About Andy Kerr Books by Andy Kerr Chieftain Columns ... Site Map By Mark Salvo and Andy Kerr Permit Retirement Generally Prohibited Permit Retirement Examples Argue for Federal Program The following examples represent a variety of purposes for permit retirement and the numerous agencies and private parties that have been involved. The price per acre or animal unit month (AUM) has varied depending on the location, the payor, and other circumstances. Retiring the permit was voluntary in every case, and respect and cooperation between the permittee, government agencies, conservationists, and legislators was the key to completing each transaction. Where available, permit retirement has been very successful, supporting conservationists' proposal for a much broader, federally financed program.

Past Students: What ARE they up to now? Stan Howarter, past student Since its inception, the Florida Coop Unit has had the good fortune to be associated - through projects and cooperators - with many talented young scientists in the early stages of their careers. There are a few that we continue to work closely with after they graduate and move on, but we do sometimes wonder where others are and what they are doing. With this in mind, we present a special list of past students that had Unit affiliations during their time at University of Florida. The listing is by no means complete, so if you know of anyone we have omitted or have new information about someone on the list, please contact us Craig R. Cooperative Extension Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Programs
We identified 27 volunteer water quality monitoring programs sponsored or co-sponsored by Cooperative Extension in the United States and its territories. Now we are up to 38! The map on the right shows where and to what extent Cooperative Extension is involved in volunteer water quality monitoring across the nation. Not shown is an Extension co-sponsored program in American Samoa.
The first of these programs began in 1978, the most recent this year. In parentheses next to each coordinator's name is the year that the program began. Program volunteers are monitoring a wide range of aquatic habitats including rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, wetlands, estuaries, and drinking water wells.
We have listed the programs that are sponsored or co-sponsored by Cooperative Extension by state in the directory that follows. We have tried our best to keep the contact information current. Many programs have websites; we have created links to these sites for your convenience. We encourage you to explore the wide range of Extension volunteer monitoring programs and contact those that interest you. All our coordinators are more than happy to share their expertise and enthusiasm with you!

60. 2001 CLB Survey - Summary, Pertinent Literature
Laura Bennett, Steve Keller, Bethany Merrell, Barbara Weber (utah State University ext.),Dave Bragg (WSUcoop. ext.), and members of the CLB working group for
http://whatcom.wsu.edu/pestsurvey/CLB2001/summary.htm
Conclusion
After three years of survey, CLB has been detected in a total of nine Washington counties. Cereal leaf beetle will most likely continue to expand its range in Washington State. This spread will probably be facilitated both by natural and human-aided movement. The state-wide detection survey will continue in 2002 targeting those counties not yet surveyed. Repeat surveys of previous detection sites will attempt to monitor known CLB populations and to identify new colonies that may have established. Supplemental releases of the biological control agent Tetrastichus julis are planned for the Nine Mile falls field insectary. The WSDA intends to set up additional field insectaries for the propagation of this and other species of biocontrol agents. The WSDA will continue cooperative work with growers, the USDA, WSU, and other western cooperators to study the distribution, biology, and natural enemies of the pest.
Summary of Activity, 1999-200
Detection Survey (See Figure A)
  • Current positive counties reported (total number of positive sites):
    Adams(2), Clark (3), Columbia (1), Franklin (1), Grant (2), Lincoln (3), Pend Oreille (2), Spokane (11), Stevens (4).
