CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION
Health Education
The Utah State Board of Education requires instruction in health education by grade levels (3-6, 7-8, and 9-12) in Administrative Rule
As part of the rule, the state board also established the Health Education Core (1997-1999), a set of standards for students in grades K-12. The Health Education Core also includes a suggested curriculum for schools to follow should they wish to do so.
While students are expected to learn and know the health standards, the state does not require them to pass a statewide exam covering health education topics at any point in grades K-12.
HIV, STD, and Pregnancy Prevention Education State Code (2002) requires the Utah State Board of Education to establish curriculum requirements that include instruction in the prevention of communicable diseases in grades 8-12. The state's Health Education Core provides further detail on suggested grades and topics: in grades 3-12 students are to receive instruction in the prevention of communicable diseases, including HIV; in grades 7-12 students should additionally receive instruction in other sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy prevention.

The court also ruled that no private right of action exists for students and parents of students to enforce requirements for public school employees, that the court is not a forum for mere advisory opinions, and that it had no authority to fire Weaver or order the school board to do so.

What compels you to take on this tremendous responsibility? Our state is at a crossroads. We cannot simply maintain the status quo and expect to meet the challenges immediately before us and on the horizon. Economic revitalization is the key to Utah’s future. Without quality, high paying jobs and a strong, vibrant economy, we will be unable to afford a world-class education for our children, fund our growth needs, or preserve our unparalleled quality of life. As one who has been active in business, public service and the community, I recognize the legacy left by our forbearers and what it will take to move us successfully into the future. To secure meaningful results, the next Governor of Utah must be able to “think outside the box,” build coalitions and rise above special interests – I will bring those qualities and commitments to our state government.

  • Edith Bowen provides services for 305 students, enrolled in grades K-5, from the Logan, Cache, and Box Elder school districts. Edith Bowen has two sessions of kindergarten and four multi-aged, non-graded Learning Communities, (grades 1-4) four looping classrooms and two traditional classrooms (5th grade). Edith Bowen strongly promotes the building of self-esteem and self-concept in children, and believes that "the heart of the curriculum is love." Edith Bowen believes the ideal climate for an elementary school should be a cross between Harvard and Disneyland, an atmosphere that provides for educational excellence, and yet also is viewed as being "the happiest place on earth." Edith Bowen supports the concept of Invitational Education. The school believes that people are able, valuable, and responsible and should be treated accordingly. The school also believes that potential can best be realized when places, policies, and programs are specifically designed to invite learning.
