Privacy Policy House Education Committee OKs charter-school bill By Ronnie Lynn The Salt Lake Tribune Lawmakers took the first step toward unleashing Utah's charter-school movement Thursday when they approved a measure that would ease regulations and possibly make it easier for people to open new schools. The House Education Committee voted 9-5 with one abstention to advance Rep. Marda Dillree's House Bill 152, which creates a new, presumably charter-friendly board to evaluate and approve applications for new charter schools. The state Board of Education would have ultimate authority to accept or reject the state Charter School Board's decisions, but would no longer be responsible for the time-consuming evaluation process. In addition, school districts could still charter their own schools. Advocates said the new board would encourage growth in the charter movement.
